Announcement today (Wed)?

Looks like they'll be an announcement of new restrictions today - ministers meeting this morning so (despite papers last night) doesn't seem they've decided what to do yet - more places in Tier 4 or national lockdown, maybe. Xmas Sad

Robert Jenrick quoted in Guardian today saying 'A judgment needs to be made as to whether the tiered system is strong enough, or whether at some point in the future we need to take further action.' which sounds a bit ominous...

@Mammamiaherewegoagainmymy

I don’t think a time has been given yet
Hello mamma - where've you see the fact of a presser today reported? Thanks.
middleager · 23/12/2020 09:52

There's some speculation that my t3 region (West Mids) will be among the tier 4s.
It won't make a massive difference to me now (we don't see anybody or go anywhere other than supermarket and school runs) unless they close the schools.

But it would make a massive difference to some I know.

The queues were insane here last time - a nearby Tesco made national news it was so rammed outside.

When the country was in lockdown I still knew some who continued to mix and visit other homes.

Elephant4 · 23/12/2020 09:52

If they change Tier 4 again that will be the 4th/ 5th change we’ve had in the last few weeks.

I’ve given up reading the rules now. I’ve no idea where to find them anyway. We’re just carrying on as before bar the things that are shut.

MadameBlobby · 23/12/2020 09:52

@LJC1234

Currently in tier 4 which feels like lockdown. Anyone any idea what would be different for those of us in T4 if there was a full lockdown
Yeah that’s what I don’t get. NS keeps wanking on about “greater restrictions “ as well. How you have tighter restrictions than everything shut I have no idea.

The whole thing is ridiculous now and utterly pointless. There are 1000 people in hospital and 50 odd people in ICU with this in Scotland. I get you can’t lift everything and have it go out of control but it seems very disproportionate to close everything down for months when there’s plenty of capacity in the NHS.

Thing is if the tightest restrictions aren’t enough then they aren’t enough. What else can be done?

Vaccine programme needs to be ramped up as a priority instead of wanking on about lockdown

Mammamiaherewegoagainmymy · 23/12/2020 09:56

@Bumpsadaisie various papers reporting announcement possible today (re Boxing Day) - meeting is today to decide - otherwise it’s Christmas Eve/day which might be too gloomy!

LKJG · 23/12/2020 09:57

The thing is, are people going to stick to rules? Are Teens going to stay in for example? People have had enough of these restrictions and some will ignore them now.

Sobeyondthehills · 23/12/2020 10:01

If they do an announcement, I think if I was in Birmingham and a couple of other areas I would be very worried about Christmas.

I know whoever was on the TV this morning kept saying they would not do that, but this government could tell me the sky was blue and I would not believe them

winechateauxjoy · 23/12/2020 10:01

I do think that schools - at least secondary schools will stay shut after Christmas. However, I think this will not be announced yet. There will be the usual 24 hour notice so that heads and teachers get the blame when parents are up in arms about not being able to get child care sorted. After all, this has been the pattern throughout - don't include the educational world in your discussions, just announce all changes in a news broadcast.

PhilCornwall1 · 23/12/2020 10:03

I notice cases in Cornwall have skyrocketed recently.

Have they? Oh joy.

I think it pretty much is being.... but they can’t inject vaccines they haven’t got yet, they can’t get it before it’s been approved and each batch has to be quality tested (apparently)

I personally know 5 over-80’s who have already had their first shot, and two more people with appointments for next week, one of whom is my DH (care home worker)

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 10:04

@TammyHullfigure

Well it's hardly a surprise. Why not just bloody do it. We are all sick of this drip drip drip feed. So unsettling.
I agree. The news on tv isn't the same as the news online either. People start to make up their own rules ( or read the daily mail and decide to believe those comments on there instead) It is unsettling.
Mammamiaherewegoagainmymy · 23/12/2020 10:05

The leaking has been so consistent that I’m expecting full details will be confirmed early afternoon today, then announcement early evening.

By ‘confirmed’ I mean leaked to a random right wing journalist on Twitter (who may or may not have locked herself out of her official account).

Schools have been treated appallingly in general.
willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 10:10

I'm no fan of this government at all but ramping up the vaccines isn't that easy I'm sure. It's a huge operation and many surgeries will also close over Christmas too adding to the woe of having to give two of them so many weeks apart.

Yup this is us. But I no longer make plans anymore and try to have bits in. Nothing the Govt says will surprise me and there's not much more they can take away, other than school. Different story for retailers clinging on though.

However, my mother hangs on the Govt every word. Been telling her for days to get some bits in though due to the speculation around Birmingham/West Mids.

Mumof3andlovingit · 23/12/2020 10:14

@willsantausesantatize

If it's said that schools will go back as they were before Christmas then people will do what they want I bet. It's all mixed messages again.
I agree. If schools remain open no one will see the point of following any restrictions. I know far too many tier 3 people currently driving down to see family/friends in tier 1.

They need to get their finger out on the Oxford one

Well if it’s just secondary schools closed, most parents won’t need childcare.

TokyoSushi · 23/12/2020 10:21

I think any announcements now will come into effect on Boxing Day. It seems likely that Tier 3's bordering Tier 4's will likely also become Tier 4 and some Tier 2's will bump up to Tier 3.

I think Tier 4 for everybody is inevitable though and may be announced at the review on 30th December.

Sobeyondthehills · 23/12/2020 10:22

@middleager one of my friends is in Birmingham as well, she was meant to be spending it with her Dad. She went to the shops this morning to get the bits she needs to make some sort of Christmas dinner instead.

Her Dad is also, but they said they wouldn't cancel it.

notevenat20 · 23/12/2020 10:24

If it's tier 4 for everywhere next to an existing tier 4 area, I wonder if that will include everywhere bordering Wales?

NoSuchThingAsCheese · 23/12/2020 10:25

My council has just announced a six month plan of restrictions in place to get it under control.

notevenat20 · 23/12/2020 10:26

Well if it’s just secondary schools closed, most parents won’t need childcare.

It's that really true? I would not be happy leaving my 11 year old alone in the house from 8 to 6pm every dayand also wouldn't be happy leaving my 15 year old, because he is grossly irresponsible.

nosswith · 23/12/2020 10:26

Tier 4 is not a lockdown or even the restrictions of March/April. It is closure of cinemas, other indoor activities such as leisure centres, and no-one visiting you except for things such as childcare.

My expectation this afternoon is more areas in tier 4 and more in tier 3. I would like Mr Johnson to resign, or better still be voted out by his own party, but that sadly is not going to happen.

Robert Jenrick incidentally should have been sacked for his breach not long after that of Dominic Cummings.
