Looks like they'll be an announcement of new restrictions today - ministers meeting this morning so (despite papers last night) doesn't seem they've decided what to do yet - more places in Tier 4 or national lockdown, maybe. Xmas Sad

Robert Jenrick quoted in Guardian today saying 'A judgment needs to be made as to whether the tiered system is strong enough, or whether at some point in the future we need to take further action.' which sounds a bit ominous...

I find him much clearer than Boris

Vitaminsss · 23/12/2020 15:26

Does anyone know who counts as “younger people” regarding the South Africa variant? Are we talking about those in early 20s or children?

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 15:26

These variants are here to stay then.
Will they contact people that have come in from SA to make sure they are isolating?
How long has that been around I wonder?

SansaSnark · 23/12/2020 15:27

Express, so maybe not the most reliable source: www.express.co.uk/news/world/1374779/covid-strain-latest-new-coronavirus-variant-south-africa-young-adults

But they are saying higher viral load, spreads more easily and more severe in the young.

All together, that is quite worrying.

SabrinaTheMiddleAgedBitch · 23/12/2020 15:27

@Scaredshitlessagain right there with you, feels like March all over again but this time Im completely worn down

ConfusedcomMum · 23/12/2020 15:27

How do I apply to live in New Zealand?

DH and I were discussing the same thing a few days ago, half jokingly....

Lifeispassingby · 23/12/2020 15:28

@JacobReesMogadishu it’s not just about the levels, it’s about the rate of increase and the numbers of the new strain

itsgettingweird · 23/12/2020 15:28

@tootyfruitypickle

Another strain. Gosh I wish I’d stayed in bed!!
That's not entirely new news.

S Africa has seen another variant similar to ours with the N501Y. It's affecting young people more.

So next thing will be schools and how safe they really are with this new variant.

RainMoon · 23/12/2020 15:29

Why aren’t they allowed their own clicker? “Next slide please”

IcedPurple · 23/12/2020 15:29

@StormBaby

Tier 4 is nowhere near strict enough. We are in for a terrible January if they don’t stop people from working outside the home again.
You mean like doctors, shop workers, delivery drivers, sewage workers, ambulance drivers, refuse collectors?

Just how 'strict' do you want things to be?

tootyfruitypickle · 23/12/2020 15:29

They’re seeing more serious disease in young people in S African but I don’t think they know yet if it is the new strain specifically . It’s definitely much more transmissible. That’s from a quick Twitter trawl

Huugi · 23/12/2020 15:29

He never goes quite as far as Nicola and that's why England still has such huge numbers. Parts of Scotland have no cases but the whole country is being put into tier 4 from boxing day for 3 weeks and schools closed until at least 18th Jan. Don't get why he doesn't just do the same. Too little too late as always from Boris.

AaronPurr · 23/12/2020 15:29

Question about schools

More waffle about testing. Sad Actually said it's to keep students and teachers safe.

SimonJT · 23/12/2020 15:29

Ah, thank you for asking about schools.

No actual answer, what a surprise and a big up yours to school staff.

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 15:29

They want to test the children still then?
The ones more likely to pick up this new variant by the sounds of it!

Beebityboo · 23/12/2020 15:30

I'm going to have a panic attack. This is horrendous.

MercyBooth · 23/12/2020 15:30

Businesses will be so pleased to have it confirmed yet again that the November lockdown was for nothing.

IcedPurple · 23/12/2020 15:30

He never goes quite as far as Nicola and that's why England still has such huge numbers.

I don't think Scotland is much better.

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 15:31

At least Dr Jennie Harris said thank you to the school teachers!

Gobacktothe90s · 23/12/2020 15:31

Dr harries also just said new virus!

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 15:31

@Gobacktothe90s

Dr harries also just said new virus!
Did she mean variant , not new?
AaronPurr · 23/12/2020 15:32

@Gobacktothe90s

Dr harries also just said new virus!
2 slip ups in the same conference isn't great. I know they mean variant, but repeating that there's a new virus is going to worry people.
SansaSnark · 23/12/2020 15:32

Business leaders cannot be happy with the repeated prioritisation of schools?

Especially when many businesses were open over the summer without a huge spike in cases (I know lots of factors were different then).

I actually think they don't know what they are doing with schools and intend to kick the can down the road for as long as possible.

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 15:33

I called it a ' new virus' to a friend the other day and she picked me up on it !
I'm nobody important.

Valeatqueave · 23/12/2020 15:33

Nothing in the north west but I suppose it’s a matter of time

Cheshire and Warrington escalated to tier 3, according to BBC News.
