I'm done. We've been isolating ready to see my parents and now we can't.

This is the third time now we've had to cancel plans last min and I'm sick of it! Totally sick of it!
@whichminoguesister I know we are an island but we have never fully shut borders
Even now with half our country stuck at home we still have our borders open and lax quarantine and that os what annoys me the most
People will still jet in and out on holiday or for supposed business
I was behind the goverment for a while but nit anymore
Also really waiting to see what they do about schools , if its not for safe for 6 of us to meet up at xmas foe a couple days , how is it going to be safe to send my teenager to sit in a room with 30 others , and then swap classrooms and potentially sit with another 30
Yes! This govt is so incompetent.
We should have closed all borders- no international flights for at least 4 weeks. Everyone (bar key workers) hunker down for the same as we did back in March. The virus needs a body to host it- it cannot go far if we stay still. Why is this so difficult for the Pm to get? We are an island for goodness sake and it's beyond me how we have not used that to our advantage. Quite shambolic really.
Coordianted lockdown with all home nations. I'm in Wales- I do not take comfort knowing that we are in a strict lockdown here knowing that my neighbours just over the bridge are in Tier 2. All or nothing otherwise it won't work and we will be in and out of lockdowns throughout 2021. I do not want that to happen.

Keep schools closed- move to online learning for the love of God and stop pretending that students are unable to move the virus around, Boris, Gavin and Co.

Astressie · 20/12/2020 11:27

This is what is happening in Sweden where they haven't implemented lockdowns and where they have relied on people acting responsibly - the same as Japan

I'm fucking done
Oliversmumsarmy · 20/12/2020 11:57

we are an island but also part of europe and an international travel hub
We had virus here in large numbers from feb half term travelling , not sure too many australians went skiing in italy

We had it here in at least December last year. I think I read somewhere that they had gone back to blood tests and found a young boy had it in November 2019

We know where we more than likely picked it up and that was early on in December.
I think Ds and myself had Long Covid. Ds even after getting over the dreadful infection spent many weeks in bed or just not doing a great deal. I remember months after I had “recovered” making the choice after doing the shopping in one supermarket, to go home and come back another day as I didn’t think my legs would carry me the 100 yards to a different shop where I really needed something else.
I normally walk around 4-5 miles per day. I was struggling in making 4-5 steps without collapsing in a heap

toocold54 · 20/12/2020 12:05

What makes you think that’s a possibility?

Because they’ve done a u-turn already on schools closing.

They said keeping schools open was the number one priority and that schools will not close again.
Now they have changed the wording to education is the number one priority which can be done remotely from home for the first week back.

toocold54 · 20/12/2020 12:09

Today my dc has rugby training some contact takes place although limited compared to normal , I can't believe this is still allowed to go ahead various schools mixing when we are having such strict measures

I agree.
I don’t know why there is still so much mixing allowed with strangers but people can’t see a couple of their loved ones who have probably been extra safe because they didn’t want to spread it in their families.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/12/2020 12:18

it’s a new virus so we don’t know exactly who it affects, long term effects, transmission rates etc once we know then things can start going back to normal

Except that by that time they'll probably discover another (conveniently timed?) new strain, then another, then another

Many are placinga LOT of faith in vaccines to save us, and they'd better hope they work - because otherwise we're back to just learning to live with it unless some think we can carry on like this indefinitely, panicking about a virus with a colossal survival rate while everything else goes to hell

Hate saying this but NHS could end up with a backlash cos of this. IF ppl cant get treatment POST pandemic many will say "but i stayed home, went without seeing family and gave up so much to protect it and now cant get treatment

No need to wait for after the pandemic - folk were already saying this over the summer, when services remained resolutely shut and those of us round here watched GPs flogging private-only appointments on NHS time
A cynic might well think that it's not so much about protecting the NHS as compensating for years of mismanagement, while allowing that to go unquestioned

timeforanewstart · 20/12/2020 12:20

@Oliversmumsarmy i was ill over xmas last year as was my brother a few weeks before and i know of several others, although could of been any bug
But cases went up hugely after skiing trips etc in uk

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/12/2020 12:24

On another note, I can't believe I missed that places of worship are allowed to stay open in Tier 4

WHY??^ Either the endlessly touted "science" says it's safe to congregate or it's not - and if it isn't, what on earth's the justification for this??

timeforanewstart · 20/12/2020 12:28

@Puzzledandpissedoff thats the thing isn't it
No consistency as with kids sport
I know they need sport mine are sports mad but 2 week full break wouldn't hurt incl the elite footballers
Yes there tested but it clearly spreads amongst them and they still go home to a family etc
He needs to have the balls to implement a full lockdown for whole country for couple weeks to at least learn more about this strain
Which lets face it isn't staying just in london , look how many left yesterday and people have been shopping , commuting for weeks

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/12/2020 12:36

No consistency as with kids sport

Exactly - which is why I'd like to know the rationale for keeping open places of worship
I wouldn't necessarily expect it to make any sense, but I'd still love to hear what it is

toobusytothink · 20/12/2020 12:41

For all those saying you’re still going to in tier 4 I really don’t think you understand how bad it is. I live rural Bucks. Not had a trace of it until a week ago and suddenly it has all kicked off big style. People texting with no symptoms “just in case” and majority is positive. When they say assume everyone in south east has it, they’re not kidding. Most are completely unaware. As I Would have been if didn’t test. Then there are others saying they aren’t going to test because if it’s positive it screws up all plans 🤦‍♀️. Please people just listen. Otherwise I can tell you this for sure - schools will not be able to reopen in jan for quite a while .....

VulvaPerson · 20/12/2020 12:46

For them to have the option to cancel Christmas bubbles a week ago and still not do it is a disgrace and people who have made plans, looked forward to it, spent money on food etc etc have a damn right to be pissed off!

This is venturing into conspiracy theory teritory a bit however, I am starting to think the reason its been dropped last minute like this is specifically so it didn't go to a vote..leaving it til now, then claiming it was last minute news and fuck all to do with parliament being 'off' is..suspicious to me.

As I understand it though, if its not actually voted on , its not actually law? Thats not me saying noone do it, before the vultures descend calling me a granny killer or whatever though Hmm

It’s the same here (slightly further out then you I think) but it is literally rife, and has come out of nowhere. On the postcode checker we’ve gone from 3-6 cases consistently since March to 40 within a mile.
RealityNotEssentialism · 20/12/2020 13:07

I think you run that risk regardless. A lockdown won’t make the virus go away and the schools are due back in a matter of weeks. And anyway, the mass travel on trains last night will have ensured that the virus will have spread quite a bit, probably more so than what would have happened if people saw family over Christmas I would imagine.

MercyBooth · 20/12/2020 15:04

Isn’t it? I thought it was too. Why can her parents provide childcare either in her home or their home, yet it’s too dangerous for them to eat or travel by car together? Surely the point of a bubble is that you’re treated as one household

A supermarket worker i was speaking to this week looks after her grandchildren so her daughter (an ICU nurse) can work. She was telling me its her daughters first Christmas Day off for eight years and they were really looking forward to it. But now obvs it isnt supposed to happen. But for safetys sake what with the new strain and all perhaps she will withdraw from childcare as its that dangerous. Cant have it both ways.

JovialNickname · 20/12/2020 15:53

@DappledOliveGroves hear hear, thank you for having the balls to voice what so many of us are silently thinking.

On the postcode checker we had over 30 cases this week

Not sure where these 30+ cases are as our postcode only covers 1 road with 8 houses on and most houses have only 2 people living there

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/12/2020 18:12

timeforanewstart when we had it I don’t think we had heard of Corona.

It was only when we saw a list of symptoms did we check them all off and think we might have had it. Loss of sense of smell, struggling to breathe and the cough. It was the cough that I couldn’t cope with. I couldn’t sleep because of it.

Then the inability to do anything for months after.
I really wanted to get things done as I had a big physically demanding project that I wanted to get done but had difficulty in getting my legs to carry me to the bathroom let alone move 1/2 tonne of porcelain tiles to tile the bathroom.
Only later did I see the symptoms of Long Covid and it was the same. Ds was the same.

Bromeliad · 20/12/2020 18:14

The postcode checker is for a middle super output area (MSOA), the area on the map at the top, not just your postcode.

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/12/2020 18:17

Still cant see where the people live who could have got it. Unless everyone has it and we are immune

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/12/2020 18:18

Or they have started to test sheep and cows or are picking up people zooming by on the motorway

Mr Cockdown himself?

Can't believe he's had the nerve. His projections are so wildly inaccurate that if he's involved in anything you can be certain it's total bullshit.

wingingwonder you’re not being a ‘cretin’ (above at all).
We can all spare a thought for others ! Stupid thing is in the midst of pretty meaningless ‘worries’ right now - like ‘will the shops have brocolli?’ Etc which I am currently in - it’s all too easy to lose sight of the realities. To be honest some of the realities are pretty scary right now.
Have a good one. Massive respect and support to everyone including all who are dealing with this nightmare at particular risk to themselves and their families.
