I'm done. We've been isolating ready to see my parents and now we can't.

This is the third time now we've had to cancel plans last min and I'm sick of it! Totally sick of it!

Why do people keep going on about lockdowns not working? I'm in Australia and it certainly works here. We've locked down a few times, big track and trace, life back to normal. If lockdown isn't working there's something wrong with whatever you're doing in the UK.

Isn’t it summer in Australia at the moment? It’s a seasonal disease and now Covid is endemic winter was always going to be a nightmare in terms of spread. Lockdown may delay this but if the point of lockdown is to allow you to unlock then they don’t work.

We're a few weeks into summer. We've had lockdowns all through the year.

Graciebobcat · 20/12/2020 02:27

If it's so fucking dangerous in Tier 4 that we can't visit family for a few hours indoors on Christmas Day, then surely schools (where the spike in cases has come from) should be remote learning only from January until the spring at least.

MercyBooth · 20/12/2020 02:52

Hate saying this but NHS could end up with a backlash cos of this. IF ppl cant get treatment POST pandemic many will say "but i stayed home, went without seeing family and gave up so much to protect it and now cant get treatment

MercyBooth · 20/12/2020 03:05

YY @Plussizejumpsuit Last time i was abroad was 1986. Some people i know have never been abroad. A lot of anger in poorer communities.

MercyBooth · 20/12/2020 03:21

@TheKeatingFive Im wondering where all the caring about illness was last December. Ive never voted Tory either. I dont smoke or drink (ive actually never been drunk)

I wonder why so many didnt give a shit last December.

A suicide victim won’t take up a hospital bed like a covid patient would

Not necessarily. Ive seen the brain damage that was done by a failed suicide. When i was a care worker in the early 90s. One of the clients at the day centre was left with life changing disability because of it.

MercyBooth · 20/12/2020 03:41

@TheGremlinsAreComing Well said!

And i think more and more of the public are now waking up to the fact that whatever they do it will never be enough.

It’s because British people are stupid. I was out today in London and roughly 50% were not wearing masks. Aussies - by comparison - are compliant.

And this is why Australians will get to spend Christmas with their families whereas British people won’t.

This! It just doesnt matter. You make the sacrifices, your kids dont see their GPs for months and months, you dont hug anyone, you dont go out for dinner, or for a drink, and at the end of it all, there is no end. Especially now with this new strain, I cant shift the feeling that this will never end.
RealityNotEssentialism · 20/12/2020 06:07
@Ted27 no profession can say they don't have rule breakers
More people I know in all professions have at least bent the rules be it deliberately or not interpreting them
Someone i know is very strict with rules yet seems to think as her parents provide childcare they have an exclusive bubble and can travel in car together and eat in each other houses and visit at other tomes and she honestly thinks that is following the rules , which to my knowledge it isn't
Isn’t it? I thought it was too. Why can her parents provide childcare either in her home or their home, yet it’s too dangerous for them to eat or travel by car together? Surely the point of a bubble is that you’re treated as one household?

RealityNotEssentialism · 20/12/2020 06:15

@happystone

I think there is a lot to learn from children.they don’t complain about social distanceing washing their hands and missing out on lots of things, everyone should just grow up and get on with it.if you MH is that bad then do what you have to do
They don’t socially distance in schools for a start and you clearly have no idea what some children from deprived backgrounds are going through.
Tinacollada · 20/12/2020 06:17

The "selfish" people are the Tories.

Looking after the capital as usual, letting people go out and get pissed with a pint of substantial meal up until today, and by with all other ridiculous relaxed lockdown rules until now.

I've got far more understanding for the people that want to and will continue their Christmas plans by seeing and supporting often vulnerable family members.

Dongdingdong · 20/12/2020 06:20

FGS - many, many people in London are really struggling after yesterday’s bombshell announcement. It doesn’t feel like we’re being “looked after” by any stretch. Have some compassion.

Tinacollada · 20/12/2020 06:22

Never said there were not people struggling in London.

Just pointing out the government have let the majority of the rest of the country go to the dogs far earlier.

Dongdingdong · 20/12/2020 06:23

Yup - getting on buses in London there will always be at least two people wearing a mask around their neck. I was forced to sit behind a woman recently who pulled her mask down to have a chat on the phone. Yet many people on here seem to defend these selfish idiots!

HedgieHog · 20/12/2020 07:40

Manchester City centre yesterday (where I live do I have to go to Tesco) people without masks, not distancing and shoving past each other
Buskers in the bloody street!!!

MummaBear4321 · 20/12/2020 07:55

Cases around my area have been flying up. I was wondering why. Then I took a rare trip into asda. I saw at least 30 people with no masks on a busy Friday evening. People who are genuinely exempt and wear a lanyard I dont mind. But these were whole families without a mask between them. Elderly couples not wearing anything. People in their 20s (which I also am) with them hanging under their chin. Weirdly, I usually go to morrisons or aldi and barely ever see anyone without one. I can see now why the cases are rising. It made me livid.

Mummywantsaweewee · 20/12/2020 08:03

@Dongdingdong @HedgieHog @MummaBear4321 yep. I haven’t shied away from going to shops but I have been careful when I go and the number of people I’ve seen without masks (no idea if they’re exempt) or wearing a mask either on their chin or with their nose poking out is incredible. A lot of the rules don’t make sense (why are schools and worship ok but seeing your parents isn’t!) but on the whole people need to use common sense and realise it’s a virus, we have to do what we can to limit spread from host to host. The more people don’t bother, the more the cases go up, it’s not rocket science.

DollyParton2 · 20/12/2020 08:12

whichminoguesister can we stop the pointless comparisons with Australia? You're very fortunate in that your sheer land mass - with so many communities so spaced out from one another makes it far far easier to carry out successful lockdowns/ isolation/ social distancing than it is here.

All those spouting on about being glad they’ve been moved to Tier 4, happy your Christmas plans have been taken out of your hands (I’m sorry but anyone who can give up on Christmas Day with family that easily can’t possibly experience the sheer magic and joy of an amazing Christmas that so many of us do or you wouldn’t be this happy to give it up) are you happy that Boris’ late announcement lead to a “mass exodus” of 100000s people in London & South East dashing to train stations/ getting in the car to travel to other parts of the country - bringing the virus with them if they have it? Yes sure that really worked didn’t it.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 20/12/2020 08:31

@DollyParton2 hear hear
The uk can't be compared to Australia or new Zealand and let's not forget it is summer there ....their winter wasnt great was it.

It was stupid and irresponsible to announce those measures last night, look how rammed the train stations were !

groovergirl · 20/12/2020 08:37

And this is why Australians will get to spend Christmas with their families whereas British people won’t.

Alas, no. New outbreak on Sydney's northern beaches means the Vic-NSW border will close at midnight tonight and my DB and his DS won't be spending Xmas with us in Melbourne. Nor will DD and I be able to fly up in Jan for a lovely Sydney beach holiday.

I'm sucking it up, and I know it's for the greater good, but I'm really missing my family. Melbourne had a hard lockdown this year, so I couldn't travel up to help DB when he took custody of his son. At least my house will be decluttered and my garden looking good when 2021 dawns.

Good luck and good health to ye Brits this Xmas. I know how hard it is for you.

OllyOllyOll · 20/12/2020 09:37

no profession can say they don't have rule breakers

This is very true.

Personally, I know NHS workers, teachers and police who have all 'broken the rules' to see family/friends.
