And I feel a little liberated.
There was a great buzz at the hospital like everyone was pleased to be doing their bit, admin, hca's to deputy director of nursing and medical consultants working on a Saturday to get the job done.

Really succinct information giving to make informed decisions for anyone with concerns, great follow up service.
Couldn't be prouder to work in the NHS or as someone with an at risk condition, having this service looking out for me.
Just wanted to share!

My grandma is booked in for her vaccine next week. I can’t wait to be able to go and sit with her in her own house. I realise it might be some time yet but there is light at the end of the tunnel!

CarinaMarina · 13/12/2020 18:54

It's so exciting, not just this massive step forward but the fact that we are making history. I've been grinning soppily at this thread, well done OP and thank you.

I have allergies to 2 medications, but I won't get to see a vaccine for a good while yet anyway (48 and healthy, not front line) so the criteria might change. I'll be happy to have a jab eventually, I've had covid and it was shite!

You are very close!

This thread is the best on here

History indeed.

@notevenat20

Does anyone think they will start vaccinating care home residents this week?
Have they had approval to split the packs up yet? I think as soon as they get that, they'll be able to get it to the care homes. They need to get the vaccine to the care homes without wasting too much, so it needs to be split into quite small packs.

That's the last I heard anyway.

alreadytaken · 13/12/2020 18:57

Heard of very elderly people being booked in near me for next week.

Awesome. Is that in care homes?

notevenat20 · 13/12/2020 18:58

I thought in heard a news report that that had been approved.

timeforawine · 13/12/2020 19:04

So happy to read people getting the vaccine after so many threads saying they won't.
I'm probably at the end of the queue but can't wait for my apt, finally light at the end of the very dark tunnel.

Susan1961 · 13/12/2020 19:26

I'm a home care worker, I've only just received & posted my first test kit after working through two lockdowns.

Imnotahugger · 13/12/2020 19:48

Love this!

KeyboardWorriers · 13/12/2020 19:52

I am so excited, I have just found out that my grandma- in her late eighties- will be getting the vaccine next week. She has been too afraid to see people so has had such a lonely year.

And my mum (frontline NHS in her 60s) is also getting it next week. She has gone into work throughout the pandemic but the risks have weighed very heavily on her mind.

KeyboardWorriers · 13/12/2020 19:53

(my grandma isn't in a care home, she lives alone)

FelicisNox · 13/12/2020 20:21

I'm proud to work for the NHS too and as soon as I have the option I will be having my vaccine.

This is what modern technology, the best brains in science working together (instead of competing), unlimited financing, the removal of stop/start and unlimited volunteers can produce.

Imagine what we could accomplish if we worked like this all the time.

Sushirolls · 13/12/2020 21:31

@princessTiasmum why should care staff get the sack if they refuse the vaccine? Why do they have no say over what goes into their body?

If my work make it mandatory, I'll walk and a lot of my colleagues also have said they won't have it. What will happen if there is no one to continue care?! It doesn't even stop you passing the virus on, so what's the point?

alreadytaken · 13/12/2020 21:45

@notevenat20 I'll try and remember to come back next week, when hopefully I'll have more information. I dont know if they are doing care homes but at least some are taking place in a different location. I dont think there would be 975 people in the local care homes so they would have to be doing some from the community.

foodtoorder · 13/12/2020 21:57

@Sushirolls what is the point?
Why a ridiculous question.

Thank you for posting, it's a glimmer of positive hope and I'm so pleased for you. I have a friend working at the MHRA and am so proud to know her. I'm sure it'll take a long time to get a big vaccine roll out but at least it's started!

notevenat20 · 13/12/2020 22:15

@alreadytaken

Please do!

Sushirolls · 13/12/2020 22:45

@foodtoorder no it isn't. Why should someone get sacked for not allowing themselves to be forced to have a vaccine that doesn't stop them spreading the virus, anyway?

People underestimate how many others won't be coerced into it. Their body, their choice.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/12/2020 22:53

‘It doesn't even stop you passing the virus on, so what's the point?‘

You are wrong. We don’t yet know what the impact is on spread.

eastegg · 13/12/2020 22:57

TunMahla seeing as you're so jealous of the OP, how would you fancy working on the frontline of the NHS? Or even better, rewinding 10 months and doing it right through the pandemic?

KittyMcV · 13/12/2020 22:58

I think it's great news that the vaccines are being rolled out. I'll be getting it, as I have done for anything else I've been offered! But I feel strongly that people that are not comfortable taking it should not be criticised or coerced. It is still early days and understandable. We live in a free society thank goodness, and I don't think anybody should feel forced to do anything they don't wish to - no matter where they work.

CheshireSplat · 13/12/2020 23:09

My DH and DSis are both front line NHS. DH had his yesterday. DSis is in the midlands, no idea when they'll be getting theirs. She's not vulnerable, late 40s, slim, but in charge of rotas at her ITU. They have 25% of staff shielding and are on their knees already and dreading the post-Christmas surge. I hope it rolls out everywhere very quickly.

Does anyone know how they chose the first trusts to receive it?

winechateauxjoy · 13/12/2020 23:17

This thread is making me all teary! Fantastic news for all of those who have had their first injection. I will be forever grateful for everyone involved in creating these vaccines - the medical teams, the scientists, the volunteers. I have hated this year and I am glad we are ending it with the beginning of light at the end of the tunnel.

I am very far down the list, but can't wait till it's my turn. I am a bit worried because I have had a reaction to penicillin in the past - a skin rash the first time and the second time a more pronounced skin rash and some numbing of my lips. This was years ago. I really hope this will not prevent me from having the injection, or hopefully the other vaccines on offer will be ok for people with those sorts of reactions. I think that because the Oxford one works in a different way that might be ok?

Anyway - congratulations to all of those and their families who are in this first tranch. You are the pioneers for a more hopeful 2021.

You're right about still being able to pass on the virus after the vaccination but it won't be as easy to pass on if you catch it due to the symptoms being less ie less coughing etc. Or having no symptoms at all.

We will still have to wear ppe at work for a long time yet, masks when out at the shops and also social distance. It's up to everyone to still do their bit.

I would recommend getting the vaccine especially if you work with the vulnerable and to stop the pandemic and glad I've had the first part.
