Matt Hancock Crying

I just watched the clip and I thought rather then crying it looked like he was laughing. Anyone else think it was weird. I was expecting him to be quietly emotional after this shit show of a year But no, it looked like he was covering up the giggles. Anyone else think this or am I on my own.

OP posts:
midlifespices · 08/12/2020 16:31

not even seen the clip but just came on to say that "please let me be the first one to give him a gentle push onto buttered stairs." is my new favourite phrase

CarrieBlue · 08/12/2020 16:31

I’d have cut Hancock some slack had he not ended his emotional moment with ‘proud to be British’ nonsense. It’s not a British vaccine, it’s come about because of European cooperation and from a team led by a Turkish immigrant. All things he is opposed to. He is still odious and still has the blood of 61000+ on his hands.

ancientgran · 08/12/2020 16:31

I felt a bit uncomfortable that he thanked the MHRA, the procurement people, the NHS, his mother (oh no I made that one up) but no mention of the scientists who actually developed it. I mean their part was rather vital and it felt a bit jingoistic that he could only praise the British bits.

It isn't that I don't think he should praise all the others but I just thought he should have included them.

Pikachubaby · 08/12/2020 16:32

He was actually laughing Shock

Wtf does that mean?!

ancientgran · 08/12/2020 16:32

Just thought, he was almost certainly on more than one programme this morning so it might just have been the one I heard.

ancientgran · 08/12/2020 16:33

Oops cross post with CarrieBlue, still nice to think I'm not on my own.

category12 · 08/12/2020 16:36

Basically I reckon they lined up a few people to be the first for the vaccine, and probably William Shakespeare was one they really considered strongly, and then thought it would look too pat and set-up. And he was laughing with relief after seeing him interviewed, as Margaret was far more articulate and a better face for it.

This is my theory.

tldr · 08/12/2020 16:38

@yetanothernamitynamechange

I think he was emotional. I dont think he is the most competant person out there, but I think he has probably been working very hard trying his best, which is something I can sympathise with and is therefore exhausted. I have simiilar feelings to him as to Theresa May.
He’s made me think at several points over the year of various people I’ve worked with, who agree something’s necessary, agree to do it, and then get back to their desk to realise they have neither the first clue how, nor the authority.
sashagabadon · 08/12/2020 16:39

To be fair, he’d been doing the rounds on the airwaves and tv all morning. He did thank the scientists. It must be hard to remember every single thing on every single interview when you have done 30 of them in a row. He’d probably been up all night worrying about it as well.

ancientgran · 08/12/2020 16:39

tidr I always think he looks like that awkward kid who wants to play with the big boys.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/12/2020 16:39

Is this whole thing just after he found out the guy who just had the jab was called William Shakespeare?

I mean, Jesus, maybe he did laugh? If he did at least he had the good grace to hide it and spare the guy's feelings.

Xenia · 08/12/2020 16:41

Anyone saying they want to push Matt H or anyone down stairs - ie hurt or kill them - I am not sure saying that is lawful never mind in accordance with mumsnet rules!

ClaireP20 · 08/12/2020 16:44

No I saw him cry, mind you I cried too when they showed the lady being vaccinated- such great news!

Can people not just be bloody happy for one day, and for once just say that Hancock did a good thing in securing the vaccine ...

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 08/12/2020 16:44
Hmm
pussycatinboots · 08/12/2020 16:45

He was speaking to Piers and Suzannah though...😂🤷🏻‍♀️

To be fair he did thank the scientists and said it was a global effort on the radio this morning at 7am.

You must have watched just the moany morgan interview on GMB this morning, because he was talking about it being a global effort just this morning on the radio.
CarrieBlue · 08/12/2020 16:52

He’d probably been up all night worrying about it as well.

I think you credit him with far too much empathy and self doubt, neither being traits generally found in Tory cabinet ministers.

Skipsurvey · 08/12/2020 16:52

i was emotional on the footage of the first lady

Backbee · 08/12/2020 16:54

I have done this before when I've been overwhelmed, I guess it's a mixture of emotions for him.

ancientgran · 08/12/2020 16:54

@ClaireP20 To be fair he did thank the scientists and said it was a global effort on the radio this morning at 7am. I did say in the next post he might have done that and I'm glad he did. It just didn't feel right to leave them out.

ancientgran · 08/12/2020 16:55

I didn't watch GMB by the way.

BlueBlancmange · 08/12/2020 16:55

I'm no fan of the Tories but Matt Hancock comes across as fairly genuine to me. He doesn't give me any sociopathic vibes in the way some other politicians do.

ClaireP20 · 08/12/2020 16:55

@sashagabadon

I think it’s entirely reasonable for him to react in an emotional day. What a year he has had. All that pressure and responsibility. I am sure it is a job that literally no one else in the country would have wanted to do. I don’t blame him for crying at all. He must feel huge relief. It is lucky he is a generally positive , can do , half glass full sort. He must have a lot of resilience and a very caring wife
I agree. I think he's done a great job in securing the vaccine, and it must be a huge relief for him too. I didn't watch the Piers and Susannah interview because I can't bear their constant negativity, however I have listened to him giving other interviews today and feel quite proud of him (and the scientists of course!)
