The fight back has begun

Unless scientific fact is somehow going to also take a holiday over Christmas then there will of course be a huge surge in both infections and therefore deaths.

People seem to be completely unable to add 1+1 and make 2 !

1.It's a virus
2.It spreads between people.
3.People are increasing contact .
4.Many will ignore facts and stay together for a number of days in confined spaces.

Wether we have a lockdown or not is really irrelevant. Because those who are happy to avoid distancing will do so and spread infection. Those who have worked it out and have the financial ability to distance will stay healthy. Those forced into work - or choose to ignore advice will get sick and die in greater numbers.

To avoid this a huge collective effort of caring for their fellow man is required. Which simply won't happen.

daisychain01 · 06/12/2020 20:13

With the vaccine so close to being rolled out, why do people feel the need to have a big Christmas this year. I don't get it. It's just one sodding day, and people are getting sucked into all the hype.

Where's the money coming from? It's estimated that on average £950 per person will be spent on Christmas. That's bonkers!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 06/12/2020 20:21

Yes, maybe February too.

Given how many posts I’ve seen re not complying with the rules, the number of schools affected, the crowds shopping rather than doing online, the Christmas mixing, new year parties and then everyone heading back into workplaces and schools it’s going to awful surely.

AutumnNymph · 06/12/2020 20:40

Yes.

CarryOnWalking · 06/12/2020 20:43

Yes. Numbers will be sky high again by then, I fear.

JacobReesMogadishu · 06/12/2020 20:48

Looking at all,the threads on here from people planning to meet with more than 3 households over Xmas, planning on also meeting New Year’s Eve, etc I would say so for sure.

Lardlizard · 06/12/2020 21:16

The replies so far have made me think that actually yes, lockdown part three is coming soon
A friend I was chatting to on Friday was saying to me there’s no way there will be another as the country can’t afford it
So I was interested in what other sensible people thought

OP posts:
AlwaysBehindTheCurve · 06/12/2020 21:22

We were told the country couldn’t afford a second lockdown.
Turns out they found that magic money tree they accused Labour of having after all.

Quartz2208 · 06/12/2020 22:02

Yes there should be a lockdown

I am just not sure I see the House of Commons voting for it unless it gets bad - particularly after the data debacle that caused the last one. I think the numbers are going to have to be high coupled with vaccine delivery issues (which could happen) for the Cabinet to even consider trying it.

Sensible and politics dont necessarily go hand in hand. Plus it would have to be more than we had last time to be properly effective.

MushMonster · 06/12/2020 22:10

I think we will have a third and last lockdown.
I am really worried about the size of the peak ahead actually. I would expect it to peak at the end of Jan. This time with as many deaths ratio as April, as older people will be exposed, though I do hope for less total deaths. I am worried about hospital capacity to be honest, and about areas with low cases getting it spreading after Christmas.
If we did not have Christmas, I think we would make it to the vaccines time with a much smaller winter peak.
At least we have the vaccines ahead to cheer us up, and as hope things will return to some proper normality soon.

Ginogineli · 06/12/2020 22:20

No chance

No matter how much Mumsnet tees wish for it they defo won’t

They’ve said as much already and tiers were basically lockdown anyway

PrincessNutNuts · 06/12/2020 22:44

Yes, it's inevitable.

People will catch covid, be hospitalised and die because of who they spend time with at Christmas.

And to slow the doubling strict restrictions will be necessary.

wondersun · 06/12/2020 23:34

Yes, think it’s inevitable and why they’re opening up as much as they can now.

MadameBlobby · 06/12/2020 23:45

I don’t know but I hope not

Now the vaccine is here shielding the old and vulnerable til they get it seems a more viable option. X

outofthemoon · 06/12/2020 23:59

Not if they close the schools for the 1st 2 weeks of Jan. That would more than balance Christmas. It's the schools driving this wave, more than anything else.

fishykettles · 07/12/2020 04:22

They won't do that, school staff are all immune because the magic walls keep it out Hmm
Jourdain11 · 07/12/2020 05:20

It's not inevitable. People have to comply. Parliament has to vote for it. I cannot see either thing happening.

KatherineJaneway · 07/12/2020 06:38

We went to a supermarket yesterday and it was awful. People with masks under their noses and so many not staying a distance away. One woman actually brushed my arm as she walked past me and another stood close to me as I was taking a loaf of bread off the shelf.

You'd hate to live where I do then, social distancing hasn't been a thing in shops since June.

notevenat20 · 07/12/2020 06:50

Yes. But hopefully the last if vaccination is done really quickly in January.

Pomegranatespompom · 07/12/2020 06:50

What on Earth are you going on about @tortoiseshell1985 what fight back ?!

PhilCornwall1 · 07/12/2020 06:55

@tortoiseshell1985

They can try The fight back has begun
Really? if this place is a snapshot of reality (of course it is!! Hmm), that's far from happening.
Quartz2208 · 07/12/2020 06:57

It isn’t inevitable at all. It probably is that numbers will rise and that we should be looking at having one yes and if Michael Gove was every MP of course we would

But the Government risking it in Parliament alongside the Brexit stuff going on? Not sure I can see Boris taking the risk on his own job

Did no one else see what happened with the basic tier restrictions for England

Kazmerelda · 07/12/2020 07:13

I think they will put the whole country into tier 3 which is practically a lockdown before they completely lock down. I do agree it will be the last one if they do though.

I am not sure they can shield the vulnerable again , social care is in pieces and families can’t help if they have money issues/have to work extra/extra childcare. I think it’s just every man for himself, my mum is vulnerable and I am still waiting 6 months on for some social care for her

I know a fair few extremely vulnerable and am myself, they haven't shielded this time round and neither have I. It's fine for the government to turn around and resume shielding, but in reality, it's untenable for many to just pick it up again.
