What am I supposed to do?

My husband and me have both come down with a cough. And hes got a bit of a temperature so we've arranged to get two tests done tomorrow.. the problem is we have a 3 month old baby and we are running very low on formula. I got paid today so the plan was to nip to asda or tesco like we usually do on payday and top up. Obviously we may not have covid but we are trying to follow the guidance. We have no immediate family in the area and no friends who drive or live this way. No delivery slots at any of the supermarkets. Looked on deliveroo and ubereats and for starters the delivery fee is at least 4 pound, I know its not a lot but when your husband is furloughed again and im on maternity every penny counts but also the milk is an extra four pound. Its 8 pound for cow and gate in the supermarket, 12 pound on the deliveroo supermarkets. Im not here to complain and im not here to start a debate. I just dont know what to do. Me and my husband have food in. But my little girl has hardly any. Please don't slate me for running low on milk. Were leaving payday to payday as it is.

I hope you’re ok. We have just recovered from Covid. We have no family near, and only a handful of friends, so getting anything delivered was a nightmare, and paying for delivery has really hit us hard for the rest of the month.

Glad your sorted and I would probably do the same but my dh was just telling me that can order through Morrisons on Amazon prime now free delivery over £40 , obviously that's no good if you only need one thing but it's worth remembering if you need to isolate.

In an ideal world you would. But seriously- how is this helpful? They cannot afford to just stock up. It’s an absolute privilege to have the luxury to be able to afford to do that.

In the circumstances she described who could the OP have hurt?

Unless she knocked someone over running down the street she wasn't in contact with anyone.

Sometimes you have to take the least worst option and imo going to an empty shop with a mask on and not seeing anyone is extremely low risk to others. I can't believe that her Tesco doesn't have screens like all the others to protect the staff.

stores ask you to not enter if you have symptoms!!

retail staff are sitting ducks......and nobody really cares about them.....a mask/screen saves them does it?

The poor staff are sitting ducks. It's totally unfair on them.

There were so many other things that could have been tried.

I'm not in a position to stock up. Our income has dropped. I buy milk every week to last my child. No it wasn't ideal but what was I suppose to do? Say sorry you can't eat because I have no milk. I used enough money to buy 2 weeks of milk. There was nobody there on the walk down or back. There was 1 staff member on the till and I went to the self service till. I had my mask on the whole time. I've had the test done today as has my husband. Im sorry but until you've been in my position you do the best you can. I needed milk. Nobody could help me till today at the earliest and im not going to let my 3 month old go hungry. Thank you for everyone else's kind comments. We both feel pretty rubbish but just waiting for results

@Chaotic45 I tried everything. We both get paid weekly, Friday is our payday. We stock up formula and nappies every Friday. We are down on our income due to this virus. Im not willing or able to pay the extortionate fees uber and deliveroo want, im certainly not going to pay 4 pound extra for milk when i know the retail value is 8 pound, not 12 the stores on deliveroo wanted. I have no immediate family in the area, no friends who drive, nobody on Facebook who could help. I really don't want to justify myself but unfortunately I feel like I have to.

Very selfish, she should have just let her baby go hungry. FFS.

She was wearing a mask and the store was empty. The staff would have been masked and probably behind screens. Get a grip.

You've risked the health of people working in the store. You went into an enclosed store, touched a basket and a self service till.

Your local store or church or covid action group would probably have delivered supplies. You could have called the store, your GP, health visitor, neighbour- anyone! You'd have found almost anyone would have helped.

It's not ok to knowingly risk spreading Covid. End of.

@Vargas of course the baby should have not gone hungry but there was no need to take this risk. People, even strangers will happily help.

Masks, visors etc. aren't a guarantee.

I take it you don't work in a shop. Why are the lives of people who do of such little importance.

OP had no idea how busy store might have been before she went, or how many vulnerable people she might endanger.

Hope you feel better soon. We had a period of isolation with small people and it was really hard as there wasn’t much time to rest and recover. Try to take things in turns if you can so you both get some rest.

Every penny counts. It was hard enough affording 2 weeks worth of milk in one transaction. As I've already said im not here to debate and im not here to justify anything. I have a three month old, same situation as you. If I was you, I would’ve done the same thing. Maybe not the right thing to do, but your baby has to eat.

I wish you lived near me and I’d seen you on my Facebook. I’ve got two unused boxes of cow and gate that I can’t give away (we had to switch formula), no charities/Hv/gp/food banks will take them (I would offer to post them to you but they are heavy to post and we are broke too and the postage is a lot ).

I have a baby and nothing would stop me ensuring he had formula.. not ideal to go out but you have no other option. Not like you popped to the shop to get yourself some chocolate!
Everyone saying you did wrong.. not a single person would sit there and leave their baby go hungry!

I did the best I could for my daughter. I have the utmost respect for people who work in supermarkets. My brother does. People did offer to help but not till today. I had enough for 2 bottles. It would have been harder to get milk at midnight when nothing is open.
