Sick of all the continued moaning: oh, why can’t I get it?; oh, but it’s only 90% effective; etc etc.; oh selfish people will stop masks..

Just be happy! It’s great news. Life can resume.

Restaurants, galleries, parties, bars, dinner with friends, holidays: brilliant

It's great news. Even if this vaccine does prove effevtive long term it's a stepping stone which will help the development of further vaccines. It also appears to use an existing base modified to effective against this virus which may help assuage safety concerns.

lifeonhardmodept2 · 10/11/2020 07:53

@TheKeatingFive

I suspect loads of people are devoted to lockdown and the “new normal” and can’t get their heads round people wanting a happy, normal life

This. There are plenty on here who are quite enjoying the drama and the misery. They don’t want it ending so soon.

Lockdown 1.0 was actually a lifesaver for our family. The restrictions that continued after have been easy for us to live with. However, the news of a light at the end of the tunnel for so many made me feel genuinely ecstatic.
WouldBeGood · 10/11/2020 07:55

@lifeonhardmodept2 it’s really nice to hear someone happy for others despite their own circumstances 😊. Hope things are better now

I’m still smiling now. What with the US election and news of a vaccine in the near future, it feels like the world has a chance to hope again.

WouldBeGood · 10/11/2020 08:00

I don't believe for one minute that there are people who don't want there to be a vaccine because they like lockdown. What rubbish.

As with people's views about everything else about this pandemic, these polarised stances on the vaccine and accusatory remarks at people who disagree are utterly ridiculous, pointlessly divisive and sometimes downright nasty. The only reasonable stance on this is to be happy that a vaccine has been created, realistic about the timescale, and cautiously hopeful about what it will allow us to do.

WindChimeTinkle · 10/11/2020 08:07

@DownstairsMixUp

I don't think people really understand vaccines hence the excitement. The government have peddled it as the end game for so long people have bought it.
It's you that doesn't understand.
weepingwillow22 · 10/11/2020 08:09

Does anyone know why the long term plan is only to vaccinate half the population (over 50s and vulnerable groups). All I have read is that the risk/benefit ratio means that younger people will not be vaccinated. I wonder if it will be available privately for under 50s.

Also as the UK signed up to covax does this mean any roll out will be slower as it is prioritised to 3% and then rolled out to 20% of the population to ensure developing countries get supplies. I am not sure if the pfizer vaccine comes under the covax scheme or not.

Unsure33 · 10/11/2020 08:10

For those critical of the track and trace system you do know that a lot of the problems are down to people not answering the phone to an unknown number or not ringing back ?

It’s not necessarily that they are not being contacted.

Also I agree with another poster. I could afford to pay for the flu jab when it’s my turn and would be willing to do so .

Hearwego · 10/11/2020 08:14

Boris was very cautious yesterday unlike his usual optimistic self. Which says to me that this is positive news, he wants to deliver on this without over promising.

WouldBeGood · 10/11/2020 08:15

As I said upthread, yesterday was a very bad day for Mr Johnson.

''It could be years before it’s decided we no longer have to wear masks / socially distance.''

Which is frankly a silly statement.

Humans are not going to stop everything that makes them human from having sex, finding partners to have kids with, making friends and seeing/hugging their loved one 'for years'.

Lockdowns are already being followed less and less because the reality is we are social creatures and no amount of 'rules' will make people supress their instincts and live non-lives for long period of time.

cyclingmad · 10/11/2020 08:47

You can be happy but have you just seen he fine Pfizer has been given and why, not to mention all the other fines they have had. I wouldn't trust that vaccine and no way will I be having it if that's the one they use.

Fizbosshoes · 10/11/2020 08:55

Boris was very cautious yesterday unlike his usual optimistic self. Which says to me that this is positive news, he wants to deliver on this without over promising.

Why break the habit of a life time though?
We had "an oven ready Brexit deal" (not true)
We were going to "send the virus packing in 12 weeks" (not true)
It would be "normal by christmas" (not true)
We would have aworld beating T and T (not true)

I suppose if he did his normal theme "everyone will be vaccinated by next March" he risks people giving up on the restrictions (more than they have already)

FourTeaFallOut · 10/11/2020 09:13

I think they needed to be cautious. If there is one thing which has become apparent is that you cannot overestimate the stupidity of the general public.

The grave tone achieves two things, to knock the wind out of the sail out of all those who would hear good news and celebrate by throwing together an impromptu party and then also to comfort those who would take a jubilant tone as a sign that they had finally found a way to install those compliance microchips into vaccines without detection.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 10/11/2020 09:19

It also keeps his powder dry for celebrations when the vaccine is approved. He can’t be seen to be taking its safety for granted and we need as much attention as possible to be given to the announcement that the vaccine is safe, when that comes, because that is what people will need to be convinced of.

DickAndSizzy · 10/11/2020 09:38

Good news is good news, even if there is still a way to go - at last there is some light.

The US election and now this Smile. I am enjoying the news this week, more than I have done for a loooong time.

cyclingmad · 10/11/2020 09:41

A bad day for Boris? How so? He has already got a deal in place for this vaccine meanwhile over in Europe they are still stuck in their procurement negotiations.

If this was other way round you would be calling for Boris head. At least acknowledge some good that out government has achieved in this respect.

LeGrandBleu · 10/11/2020 09:43

I am happy but perplexed on how they can say 90% effective. So the vaccine was given to half the enrolled of 43.000, so hard got of these got vaccine, the other half and placebo and all were sent back to their life. They were not deliberately exposed to the virus. Some time later 94 got coronavirus, mostly in the placebo group, so 90% of those who got covid had received the placebo.
This is different than being exposed to the virus, since going around your life , many factors are at play.

And have you seen the news about Brazil having suspended a different trial after adverse event. edition.cnn.com/2020/11/10/health/brazil-suspends-china-vaccine-trials-intl-hnk/index.html

Hearwego · 10/11/2020 09:43

People who think think social distancing and face masks will go on for years.. I bloody well hope not!
Apart from the economic damage, what about people’s mental health? How would people meet partners and have children together? How would people make friends, apart from virtual ones? How would people cope never seeing elderly relatives again?
The human race would start to decline..
Surely the longer this would go on the harder of would be for people to accept?
Who wants to live in a world of restrictions on our freedom, forever??

countrygirl99 · 10/11/2020 09:48

@cyclingmad meanwhile, in the real world, covid isn't the only issue.

WouldBeGood · 10/11/2020 09:56

@cyclingmad I explained why a bad day. Not virus related

There is sudden elation because we know it works! Interim data could have shown 50% efficiency but its 90%. I think this is such good news. Honestly if we can’t be elated hearing the news that there is a possible vaccine in the near future that is 90% effective then when can we?!
I know the end game is going to comprise better treatments and testing etc but surely a vaccine is a big part of it.

Rabbitholebonkers · 10/11/2020 10:01

I agree OP. Depends on how full or empty your glass is. Mines full so I’m happy.

It was said to be pretty much the only feasible way out of it yesterday by key scientist.

It really is a big deal and agree a reason to be elated.

Will take time due to deployment and two doses then lag, so I can see why conference had slightly different tone. But in itself it is a breakthrough.
