AIBU just to be fucking happy there’s a vaccine?

Sick of all the continued moaning: oh, why can’t I get it?; oh, but it’s only 90% effective; etc etc.; oh selfish people will stop masks..

Just be happy! It’s great news. Life can resume.

Restaurants, galleries, parties, bars, dinner with friends, holidays: brilliant

GoldenOmber · 09/11/2020 22:48

And 90%+ effective is just brilliant, way better than almost every prediction. For all the "a vaccine won't be a silver bullet!" warnings of a couple of months ago, a vaccine that effective actually would be.

Vivana · 09/11/2020 22:48

I'll be very happy to get the vaccine as a Care assistant dealing with covid residents I'm at huge risk to get covid

TeddyIsaHe · 09/11/2020 22:50

@WouldBeGood

It’s not naive to be happy about a vaccine.

I suspect loads of people are devoted to lockdown and the “new normal” and can’t get their heads round people wanting a happy, normal life

Excuse me? My father died from covid complications in May. I hate everything about this all.

But to be gleeful about a vaccine that isn’t even in circulation yet just gives people false hope. It’s not going to suddenly go back to normal in a few months, as much as you wish it would.

tortoiseshell1985 · 09/11/2020 22:51

I cried too but the govt briefing was so downbeat. Why cant we have our lives back if there's an effective vaccine?

IAmADNAMA · 09/11/2020 22:53

This has made my day.
Yes it's early days but we're going in the right direction for once.
Thank you to all the people who trialled this vaccine and who have been working around the clock to find an effective vaccine for us all. The real unsung heroes.

Hearwego · 09/11/2020 22:54

Even if the vaccine is (eventually) rolled out, they were still only talking about it allowing us to return to a ‘new normal’ and that they don’t know yet whether it will reduce transmission. It could be years before it’s decided we no longer have to wear masks / socially distance.**

That thought is utterly depressing. Will people honestly live like this for years? There will be no foreign holidays, restaurants, leisure centres, theatres if this was the case.

Tootsey11 · 09/11/2020 22:55

I'm being cautious and realistic because nothing has been given the go ahead.
I dont work from home.
I work a risky job were CV is concerned.
And I've got crap health through no fault of my own.
I would like nothing more than a vaccine, but one that is safe and confirmed effective against an ever mutating virus.
I also do not believe that the government will fund this vaccine continuosly for the whole population if say immunity only lasts a matter of months.

GoldenOmber · 09/11/2020 22:56

No, we won't wear masks and socially distance for years. People won't do it, for one, and there'd also be no need for it if a vaccine reduced the danger of covid to anything less bad than seasonal flu, so what would be the point?

e1y1 · 09/11/2020 22:57

@WouldBeGood

Fair enough of people want to stay in and wear masks. But there’s no appetite for a “new normal”
It's not about whether there is an appetite for a new normal, it's about what needs must.

I for one am sick to the back teeth of Covid and all that goes with it, and nothing would make me happier than a return to previous.

But don't say that a new normal is something wanted/something that we have an appetite for. Didn't feel that way when my DM had her cancer treatment suspended in March or a DF who has not been able to leave his house for 7 months.

WouldBeGood · 09/11/2020 22:58

People just won’t do som the masks/not see family/ have no fun for much longer. Vaccine or no vaccine to be honest

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 09/11/2020 22:59

@e1y1 just for the record I’ve been waiting for a biopsy and exploratory surgery since February

OP posts:
Madhairday · 09/11/2020 23:00

I feel like it's like the first signs of dawn, just that tinge of hope and we all need hope. I'm elated by the news, while being very realistic about all its caveats and time frames.

GoldenOmber · 09/11/2020 23:01

For comparison, 'over 90% effective' is what the measles jab currently is. Do we all wear masks and socially distance indefinitely and trudge through a 'new normal' just in case we pass on measles? No, we do not.

Hearwego · 09/11/2020 23:03

I’m pleased with the news and believe there must be something in it as Boris did a briefing on this due to this breaking news.

I’ll wear a mask and social distance, but I’ll never accept this a a new normal. Wearing masks, not seeing family and closing entire businesses is not normal!
I think most people would rather take the risk even if a vaccine wasn’t found, if it meant their lives could be normal again.
Who seriously would want to live with restrictions forever?
I’d feel so sorry for our young people. They would miss out on so much.. and how would people meet and form physical relationships so the human race could
carry on?...

tobee · 09/11/2020 23:03

I'm realistic about the vaccines and have read a good deal.

However, op I advise against coming to Mumsnet if you want people to back you up with your happiness. It's the wrong place to look. Don't forget all the doom merchants have the real truth on their side. We are all but fools in comparison.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 09/11/2020 23:04

‘ also do not believe that the government will fund this vaccine continuosly for the whole population if say immunity only lasts a matter of months.’

It would be far cheaper to vaccinate the whole country several times a year than pay the costs of treating people with it, let alone the cost to the economy. Vaccines are an absolute bargain.

Hearwego · 09/11/2020 23:04

Please God, let us have our lives back by the spring...

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/11/2020 23:04

There is no realistic prospect of SD going in for years. I can't see it going on in any real way past spring next year come hell or high water to be honest.

You can already see the shift in people's thinking. Before the first lockdown people were voluntarily cancelling things and taking their DC out of school. This time people planned restaurant and pub trips in the last few days things were open, people have started to acclimatise to the additional risk.

Once a critical mass have abandoned SD the whole idea will pretty much collapse.

tobee · 09/11/2020 23:04

90% efficacy (in fact 90% plus I believe) was the most optimistic assessment a few days ago. So that's amazing!

e1y1 · 09/11/2020 23:05
@e1y1 just for the record I’ve been waiting for a biopsy and exploratory surgery since February
I'm sorry to hear that and I really hope it is nothing.

It's horrible what has happened/gone on due to this wretched thing - treatments and operations missed etc.

And whilst the news of a vaccine is indeed good news, it doesn't reverse what has happened and what's been lost and whilst it seems pessimistic, some won't want to get their hopes up too fast too soon, but it doesn't mean people want what we're having to put up with now.

Surely no one wants this.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 09/11/2020 23:07

Facebook is just as bad. Comment on the breaking news along the lines of "I'm not taking it it's been created by aliens/boris/americans/Germans" OR my personal favourite..."You can't vaccinate against a virus. Never in history has there been a vaccine for a virus" obviously they've never heard of the flu vaccine etc and I think they may have been getting confused with antibiotics...but still! Hmm

5thriver · 09/11/2020 23:08

It’s great news indeed. 👍

Hearwego · 09/11/2020 23:08

If it means paying for a vaccine twice a year out of my own pocket I’d do it. If it means we can have our lives back, surely that’s a price worth paying? ( for those of us Gaby can afford it). I’ll gladly pay a bit more into the coffers if it means having no restrictions again.

PurpleDaisies · 09/11/2020 23:10

World beating track and trace system?

Boris is a really bad person to look to for what’s feasible and what isn’t.

Somebody should let those people wasting all that time giving DC the MMR (against 3 diseases caused by viruses) know! Where do people get this stuff?!
