AIBU just to be fucking happy there’s a vaccine?

Sick of all the continued moaning: oh, why can’t I get it?; oh, but it’s only 90% effective; etc etc.; oh selfish people will stop masks..

Just be happy! It’s great news. Life can resume.

Restaurants, galleries, parties, bars, dinner with friends, holidays: brilliant

The news of the vaccine is not false hope. There are at least three in stage 3 testing and all have been showing good results.
They do hope that the start of vaccinations will be mid-end of December.

So it's great that the news is giving us hope.

tobee · 09/11/2020 23:19

The efficacy of a vaccine is not down to Boris Johnson.

Extrapepperoni · 09/11/2020 23:21

YANBU. I'm happy too!

Racoonworld · 10/11/2020 05:36

@WouldBeGood

People just won’t do som the masks/not see family/ have no fun for much longer. Vaccine or no vaccine to be honest
This. Lots of people are expecting to get back to normal in spring after Boris said 6 more months. I for one will definitely be getting back to normal by then (well as normal as I can if things are still closed) and will be seeing friends and family. Everyone I know feels the same. The government know they can only restrict people for so long. They will be putting everything in place that they can, including a vaccine, to reduce the virus impact by then as they know social distancing won’t be able to be used for much longer.
BefuddledPerson · 10/11/2020 05:53

@WouldBeGood

It’s not naive to be happy about a vaccine.

I suspect loads of people are devoted to lockdown and the “new normal” and can’t get their heads round people wanting a happy, normal life

Biscuit for equating being scientifically literate with not wanting a normal life.

I'm so tired of people who don't understand things properly trying to dictate everyone's emotional state.

I think the Pfizer vaccine sounds like good news. I also understand the road ahead.

Calligraphy572 · 10/11/2020 06:10

I read it as another hopeful sign that a vaccine will be along by late Spring or so. I'm not crying for joy or uncorking the champagne - but it's a great boost, knowing that real progress is being made and that there is light, even if it's still a bit in the distance.

Grobagsforever · 10/11/2020 06:34

@Hearwego

Even if the vaccine is (eventually) rolled out, they were still only talking about it allowing us to return to a ‘new normal’ and that they don’t know yet whether it will reduce transmission. It could be years before it’s decided we no longer have to wear masks / socially distance.**

That thought is utterly depressing. Will people honestly live like this for years? There will be no foreign holidays, restaurants, leisure centres, theatres if this was the case.

@Hearwego

No of course they won't! There will be my multiple strands ending this pandemic:

Gradual hard immunity (T cells)
Vaccines
Natural burnout of disease just EVERY OTHER PANDEMIC EVER

Some ppl really do love lock down and all the lovely rules. Ignore them and be happy.

lovelemoncurd · 10/11/2020 06:43

I'm not sure why there is a sudden elation. There was always going to be a vaccine produced. It's a question of when it's ready and that's not yet.

lovelemoncurd · 10/11/2020 06:45

I think anti MMR crew should be at the bottom of the list for it by the way!

justanotherneighinparadise · 10/11/2020 06:46

I haven’t dared read beyond the headline incase it was another carrot 🥕on the end of a million metre stick. If you’re telling me it’s really true then I am unbelievably happy 😍

WouldBeGood · 10/11/2020 06:48

@justanotherneighinparadise it’s honestly looking pretty bloody good! 😊

It is good news, but I can't get past the fact it needs to be stored at -80°. Nhs doesn't have infrastructure to be able to maintain the cold chain.

Plus it needs to be doses a number of weeks apart. Plenty of people are not going to bother/forget to go for the second one or not get it within the timeframe so immunity will be compromised.

It’s not going to be: vaccine available! Everyone get back to normal!

I’d be surprised if it’s made headway with the population by March/April next year.

But do feel free to pin your hopes on it. Just don’t start threads in 6 months time moaning.

WouldBeGood · 10/11/2020 07:01

I’m just going to be happy about a good piece of news. 😊

I think people will take the repeat doses and the storage will be managed. It will be cost effective.

I can’t wait to get my lovely normal life back 😊

Sir John Bell hit the right note for me. He was happy and said it was hugely important that it’s possible to vaccinate against, huge step etc. Which is how I feel.

Snog · 10/11/2020 07:05

Its fab news OP and such a relief.

Boris wasn't especially enthusiastic though which I thought out of character for him.

WouldBeGood · 10/11/2020 07:08

Boris is just awful and probably distracted by the vote in the Lords against the law breaking Bill, and the fact he’s fucked it up good and proper with the US now Biden has won 😃.

I'm over the moon. And if people insist on labouring the fucking train metaphor up until yesterday we didn't know if we were stood at an abandoned station. I'll be in round six, I'll wait, it's fine - every time one group is vaccinated we start moving towards normality. Front line clinical staff will be first - that's good news for everyone who likes having front line clinical staff when they go to hospital.

MangoM · 10/11/2020 07:11

I can't even describe how happy I felt on hearing the vaccine news ... we were on the way to the test centre to get my DS tested as he'd just been sent home from nursery with a cough. The timing could not have been more perfect, it really perked me up after a rubbish morning.

I'd give it a month. They're applying to roll it out on a special licence. There is no way it won't be granted. Places are being prepped for role out. No, the whole pop won't have been vaccinated by Xmas but I'll eat my hat if they haven't started.

It wasn’t a given it would work as well as it has, or at all. Anyone from scientific vaccine background is highlighting what a big deal it is.

It's people like this that really depress me. Scientifically stupid and making things up as they go along. The vaccine works in 90% of people, therefore when a good portion of the population is immunised, covid rates will go down and down, and it will become practically irrelevant in our lives.

Think I need to stay away from Mumsnet now. The levels of stupidity, scare mongering and misery is alarming.

See you at the vaccine clinic somewhen early 2021GrinGin

WouldBeGood · 10/11/2020 07:46

@WindChimeTinkle see you there 😂
