Sick of all the continued moaning: oh, why can’t I get it?; oh, but it’s only 90% effective; etc etc.; oh selfish people will stop masks..

Just be happy! It’s great news. Life can resume.

Restaurants, galleries, parties, bars, dinner with friends, holidays: brilliant

YABU it's the most rushed vaccine ever, we should be very cautious

TeddyIsaHe · 09/11/2020 22:21

Oh lord, the naivety on this thread 😂

Be happy, sure. But please use your brains a bit more and understand that this news isn’t an instant fix. This is still the very beginning.

WouldBeGood · 09/11/2020 22:24

It’s not naive to be happy about a vaccine.

I suspect loads of people are devoted to lockdown and the “new normal” and can’t get their heads round people wanting a happy, normal life

Quillink · 09/11/2020 22:25

It will be life changing for vulnerable people. Might mean that I get to see my parents again too, after months of enforced separation. Brilliant news.

CruCru · 09/11/2020 22:25

I am extremely happy.

PurpleDaisies · 09/11/2020 22:26

Everyone wants life to improve, but anyone who has spent five minutes learning about vaccine development and how this could possible rolled out to enough people to make life normal again knows that we’re a long way off that happening.

It’s worse to be surprised when we’re still stuck with restrictions for a good while yet.

LastTrainEast · 09/11/2020 22:26

It's fantastic news. And as a bonus we get to point and laugh at the idiots who are unhappy/disappointed about it.

pilotsprincess · 09/11/2020 22:26

Yes its still the beginning but its a light at the end of tunnel ( said tunnel being darker for some people and quite enjoyable for others tbh! )
I am elated and I just dont care at all what anyone has to say. We didnt have this light yesterday and now we have.
I am a person that lives life to the full and cant wait for it to return, which it will🎉 if we have to wait another year thats fine, we know theres hope now🎉

WouldBeGood · 09/11/2020 22:27

Yes! I want light

Potential vaccine.
We don’t have the safety data yet.
We don’t know how long the effects will last.
This is still early days in terms of the trial.

It is promising but people are really getting carried away here. Some of the reporting on this in the media has been really irresponsible,

RaspAsYouChokeOnTheToupee · 09/11/2020 22:28

@OrangeBananaFish

YANBU. We all (well most of us) realise that nothing is going to change overnight and we're not suddenly going to be like we were in 2019, but this is the start of the end. Yes we know its going to take a few more months, but we're are getting closer. This is a good thing. It is a step in the right direction.
You can’t necessarily say that’s it’s the start of the end, the vaccine hasn’t even be approved for use. It has demonstrated some immunity in 90% of people for an indeterminate amount of time. It is not yet clear whether it prevents you passing it on or just prevents you getting sick. It hasn’t been peer reviewed yet. There are still things that can go wrong before this is the confirmed vaccine.

Everyone is reacting like this vaccine is ready for rollout, when it’s not. I’m not saying I think you’re all expecting to go back to normal straight away but the vaccine isn’t actually ready. To me, this is no different than the world beating track and trace system we meant to have in April. It was being developed. It was going to be amazing. Look how well that turned out.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/11/2020 22:29

Such brilliant news. I'll be first in the queue to get it!

TheKeatingFive · 09/11/2020 22:30

This. There are plenty on here who are quite enjoying the drama and the misery. They don’t want it ending so soon.

laudemio · 09/11/2020 22:34

Vaccine hasn't passed safety trials yet. But it is very good news.

I’m fucking miserable with lockdown, thanks. I’ve been out to a restaurant with one friend since March. I’ve not seen my family and I’ve not hugged my mum since March. My brother has been stuck at university in Liverpool. My friend has been trapped at home with her autistic son and her abusive partner. Everyone I know has worse mental health now than they did this time last year. I want nothing more than to hug my mum, hug my friend’s newborn baby, not wear a fucking mask everywhere I go. I want a happy, normal life. I’m just not putting all my hopes on a vaccine that hasn’t even been peer reviewed.
Fizbosshoes · 09/11/2020 22:35

I feel like as we go into what is going to be a difficult winter/christmas there is some hope on the horizon.

I dont expect to get the vaccine (early 40s, no medical conditions) but I got really hopeful that my elderly relative who has left his house 3 times since March might be a high priority to get it. Apart from not being able to see his family, he has missed 2 heart appointments because he is too worried to get a taxi to the hospital.
I know it wont change everything but it's good to have something tangible to hope for.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 09/11/2020 22:35

The pharma company would not have allowed the efficiency data to have been released unless they were already sure of the safety data too. No way.

They would look like complete idiots and stocks in the company would plummet.

It IS good news. And to be fair who cares how long immunity lasts. I'll have a jab every 6 months if it gets us out of this half life we are all living. And so would everyone I know.

My mum is frontline NHS and my dad is ECV so both high up on the list so this is good news for our family

TheKeatingFive · 09/11/2020 22:36

To me, this is no different than the world beating track and trace system we meant to have in April. It was being developed. It was going to be amazing. Look how well that turned out.

Well the most obvious point of difference is that T&T was promised by a charlatan government, based on nothing.

The vaccine is being reported on by a world renowned pharmaceutical company that has everything to lose if they fuck it up or over promise. They have their reputation and their shareholders to answer to if they’ve called it wrong.

They’ve analysed most of the data and there are caveats on the 90%, but they wouldn’t be reporting this if they weren’t very sure.

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/11/2020 22:38

It is fantastic news. Nothing will change quickly but hopefully there is a path toward change that is visible now.

I think some people cope with the situation by very tightly managing their expectations. It's been no vaccine/no vaccine for coronaviruses/vaccines take 5-10 years/might only be marginally effective/will take years to manufacture/it's been rushed etc on the vaccine front the whole way through.

This isn't the end of the story but it's a fantastically positive step and everyone needs hope!

TheKeatingFive · 09/11/2020 22:39

Immunity doesn’t have to be long lasting to make a huge difference. I’m sure we’ll get used to trotting off to the doctors every six months. That’s a lot better than lockdown.

GoldenOmber · 09/11/2020 22:40

Potential vaccine.

Actual vaccine. 20,000+ people have already had it, many many more doses have already been produced.

We don’t have the safety data yet.

There isn't 'the' safety data. We have some safety data - the trial would not have been able to get this far if early safety trials had not been good. We have ongoing data from the Phase III trials, which will include safety data, with regulators like the MHRA and the European Medicines Agency right now because they're doing this 'rolling review' thing. What we don't have is the regulators' verdict on the rest of the safety data up to this particular point, which yes is important, but is a long long way from not having any safety data.

We don’t know how long the effects will last.

Our worst-case scenario there is yearly boosters. I think most people would be fine with that if it's the price to pay for getting back to normality.

This is still early days in terms of the trial.

It's not, really, because Phase III trials like this are event-driven for their analysis - they run until X number of infections have taken place. They've hit 94 cases already, their final analysis will come at 164 cases, but they can request authorisation for emergency use of the vaccine if it very obviously works very well before then, which is what they're going to do.

This actually is good news! I know it's been so long since we've had any we've forgotten what it looks like, but sometimes good news still happens. Smile

Yep. They'll dress it up as being 'cautious' and 'realistic' but fact is quite a few people are very comfortable with their naice lives WFH while waiting for the sourdough to rise and tut-tutting over Sarah in number 14 having 2 family members round for dinner. They wouldn't quite know what to do with themselves without all the drama and doom.

Leading scientists are urging caution. Painting posters doing the same as lockdown lovers really is pathetic.

RoSEbuds6 · 09/11/2020 22:43

Yanbu - I’m thrilled!

Many of them have form - in fairness.
