To think this time loads of people are not going to comply

Been speaking to family and friends and the general mood appears to be that this time round is different.

Most people say they are going to break the covid rules. Obviously they can’t go out to restaurants or stuff but they said they will have friends and family round.

I think people and govt may be overestimating compliance this time around.

Could we be left with an ineffective lockdown that only serves to further damage the economy?

I think PattyPan's non-answer to PhilCornwall1 says it all, sadly.

Everyone should be putting their own mental and physical health first, and those of their families, however that may be.

MercyBooth · 02/11/2020 19:30

@DrizzleandDamp I think surface compliers will be most people.

SheepandCow · 02/11/2020 19:33

And many of these posts explain why we, unlike other countries, i.e. much of Africa and Asia, will still be in this mess many months later.

southeastdweller · 02/11/2020 19:35

Months? No, we'll be in this mess for decades.

She very clearly and simply explained what most of the world's experts including the WHO have been saying.

If people fail to understand very basic facts, it says something very worrying about people's comprehension abilities.

I bet the chimpanzees are more intelligent than many humans. It would be a step up if the vaccine turns us into one.

Let's just ensure it lasts as long as possible, and has the worse possible long-term economic damage then shall we?

Clearly the view of many.

Brick walls. So many of them. Nobody at home.

Who should we all listen to. World governments, the WHO, the BMA, the vast majority of scientific and medical experts, the evidence (of countries who have already taken effective containment measures)? Or the drag it all out because because we can't we won't we don't and we think we know better posters on Mumsnet. And the far right.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by breaking the rules . Having a walk with both of your parents instead of just one, or standing and chatting to friends in your front garden is a bit different to having a group of people in your house every day .

I have a lot of friends and family members who have been living under tier 2 restrictions for some weeks . The majority of them believe they are complying but in reality have a very loose understanding of bubbles .

shinynewapple2020 · 02/11/2020 20:00

@flowerycurtain

It's not just the families thing. There's so many more businesses that are staying open this time. I work on a business park with 15 other businesses. Last lockdown 3 remained open and 11 shut down for at least 6 weeks.

All 15 are staying open this time.

My understanding is that they are meant to stay open . If people cannot work at home they should go into their place of work (unless it happens to be hospitality or leisure industry , non-essential shop)

shinynewapple2020 · 02/11/2020 20:08

@IrkedEssex well those people visiting their elderly parents are allowed to do that

flowerycurtain · 02/11/2020 21:02

@shinynewapple2020 I don't actually think it's a bad thing. Most of them are one man bands or small manufacturers who can easily social distance and ventilate. I think it was a bit nuts they all shut in the first place.

I suppose what I'm getting at is that it took us 12 weeks to get it under control with far harder lockdowns in the spring. I hope very much just shutting pubs, some retail restaurants etc will work but I'll be amazed if it does!

Qasd · 02/11/2020 22:40

I do agree with @flowerycurtain there were a lot of businesses that shut last time are not doing so this time. They actually didn’t have to last time either you were always allowed to go to work if you couldn’t work from home, restaurants could always open for take outs etc but last time they didn’t it was seen as socially responsible to stop doing things like construction, to shut all McDonald’s and costas ...restaurants known for take out.

This is where I think there is a difference not in people not doing what they are being told to do but they were only going to get that good will once they couldn’t afford to do it again. Did shifting all the McDonald’s for take out help reduce the spread? I don’t know and obviously safety measures in these places have increased since then but if there was any impact felt by these large numbers of voluntary closures it will not be felt this time.
