To think this time loads of people are not going to comply

Been speaking to family and friends and the general mood appears to be that this time round is different.

Most people say they are going to break the covid rules. Obviously they can’t go out to restaurants or stuff but they said they will have friends and family round.

I think people and govt may be overestimating compliance this time around.

Could we be left with an ineffective lockdown that only serves to further damage the economy?

it means that the lockdown was a waste and the sad impact on you and others will have been for no benefit due to people not complying.

Something about this part of the reply really doesn't sit right at all. Are you saying that what the poster is going through is for the greater good?

480Widdio · 02/11/2020 16:10

I am not complying this time around and I don’t know anyone who is.My son says none of his work colleagues will be complying.

Just been into town, the shops are not at all busy,I take it everyone will visit the supermarket as per usual.

We have to make a stand against these lockdowns, they DONT work.Meanwhile people’s mental health is suffering, there are no benefits whatsoever to lockdowns.

Patrick Vallance one of the main Government advisors has £600,000 of shares in a vaccine company!!So of course he wants to spread doom and gloom.Wake up we are being hoodwinked. The rich are getting richer and the rest of us can just wither away and die,as far as the Government is comcerned.

We have to live with this virus is it going NOWHERE.

MercyBooth · 02/11/2020 16:12

Other end of town has a power cut due to the winds. Friend says it wont be fixed till 7pm. If they are expecting people to lockdown at this time of yearand/or WFH they will have to get these power companies to buck their ideas up. Because i will be going somewhere where there IS power if this happens on this estate lockdown or no lockdown.

NotAKaren · 02/11/2020 17:46

Last time we complied out of a real fear of this virus and also out of a sense of collective duty to protect the NHS. The fear of the virus is a lot less now that we understand more about it, the collective responsibility is gone and now it's everyone for themselves in a fight to survive.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/11/2020 17:49

the collective responsibility is gone and now it's everyone for themselves in a fight to survive.

Oh, give over with this hyperbolic guff.

lostallhope77 · 02/11/2020 17:56

but do you think that you not complying with the restrictions will help you keep your job or home?

Of course not - but I just don’t see the point in anything anymore. I’m at rock bottom.

lostallhope77 · 02/11/2020 17:57

@DownThePlath I saw your post before it was deleted and want to say thank you.

Goodlockdownhair · 02/11/2020 18:08

I will comply, so will my friends & family. We are all in (currently) low risk areas.
I don't worry about other people breaking the rules - I just do me.

likeamillpond · 02/11/2020 18:13

The people who refuse to comply need their heads read.
Police had to break up a huge party in Bristol over the weekend.
Those who were there will no doubt be the first to start bitching and whining in future if there are even longer and more lockdown. Their education and future job prospects will be stuffed.
In fact they're giving the young people who ARE abiding by the rules- of which there are many, a bad name.
The sooner we all stick to things the sooner we get out of it.
Boring but true.

likeamillpond · 02/11/2020 18:19

@SausagePourHomme

I am not sure who you think you are rebelling against? Its a fucking virus, it doesn't understand or care.

It is the same thing as being annoyed you are getting older. You can't stop it from happening by sulking. We just need to do this

Excellent comment!
MercyBooth · 02/11/2020 18:19

@likeamillpond Are you saying this thread is full of ravers?

Wow, I didn't even realise it had been deleted. You're welcome. Her comment was just hideous, and it really annoyed me. Please try and stay strong, and access support if you need it.

@IrkedEssex

I know a lot of people who complied to the letter last time round who are not going to go mad this time but are not going to bust a gut to comply to the letter.

In closing down all the covid safe environments we could previously at least see other human beings in (even if we couldn't mix latterly), the government is going to drive social mixing into private houses, which they say is one of the worst environments for the spread of disease. It is impossible for Plod to visit every house every day and while a big party might be obvious, someone visiting their elderly parents won't be.

Correct.

I'm very much hoping that when we get the legislation tomorrow, it's really clear that as many public outdoor spaces as possible will be allowed to stay open, so NT properties and the like. And the exemption that Nadine Dorries mentioned yesterday for preschool children who are with a parent who's meeting another person outside will come to fruition.

We need as many incentives as possible for people to socialise outside, because the alternative is lots of these people doing it inside instead.

Florencemattell · 02/11/2020 18:28

If we end up with bodies piling up on ice rinks. People being told they are over x age so please die at home - then I hope all those who don’t care feel ashamed.
The NHS will NOT cope !
The older I get the more I realise I that most people are not nice . Everyone clapping on their door steps what a farce.

SheepandCow · 02/11/2020 18:39

Mental health is definitely so important.
I especially feel for our under pressure traumatised frontline workers.

DrizzleandDamp · 02/11/2020 18:39

People will break into 3 groups:

  • vehement compilers, some quiet, some like people on this thread that says anyone even slightly questioning the numbers or sense should die a horrible death
  • surface compilers - who will mainly abide, wear masks, socially distance, stay home mainly. But take educated risks. I include myself here, I won’t be allowing my parents to be completely alone, we will visit in their big garden and come Christmas I will pull the kids from school for 14 days, isolate and have dinner with them.

Everyone else - mainly youngsters who don’t give a shit and will live as normal, or worse as lockdown will force them into house parties not socially distanced pubs.

It won’t work, there is no end point, I support the Barrington Declaration. They have half a chance of compliance to that.

SheepandCow · 02/11/2020 18:41

Wise words from scientific expert, Professor Devi Sridhar:

Three paths for governments: ‘simmer’ virus & be stuck in lockdown/release cycles, do nothing & let it rip or aim for elimination with strong test/trace/isolation, good guidance to public & border measures. Two of the above paths lead to large economic costs; one less so.

SheepandCow · 02/11/2020 18:44

From a UN based BBC journalist:

It's an interesting, if perhaps painful, little lesson for Europe at the @WHO #COVID19 briefing this evening. A doctor from #SierraLeone is explaining the measures they took, with incredibly limited resources. No new cases at the moment...

SheepandCow · 02/11/2020 18:47

The best option, for the health of people and that of the economy, is to pursue a 'maximum suppression' approach": @devisridhar writes: get case low, monitor border, test, trace, isolate

Importantly, because lockdowns are a hardship, they need to be worthwhile. No point going through the hardships if we continue to import Covid.

Any progress with #Lockdown2 will be wiped out by UK continuing to reimport the virus

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/11/2020 18:52

Everyone I know in RL is grudgingly complying and just getting on with it. The virus doesn’t know or care if it’s Wednesday or Thursday, or anything else, so we are just going about our business as far as we can, SD, wearing masks, etc. I personally have two friends who have lost parents to Covid, and currently have two other friends of friends who have it. I makes it very real when you know people directly affected

southeastdweller · 02/11/2020 18:54

Lockdown, in terms of mixing households at home, is largely unenforceable - so many people are sick and tired of the government's lies and propaganda and obviously there is less inclination now to be outside and socialise. Anyone thinking the vast majority of people will comply with lockdown 2 this winter is dreaming.

PattyPan · 02/11/2020 18:57

@PhilCornwall1

it means that the lockdown was a waste and the sad impact on you and others will have been for no benefit due to people not complying.

Something about this part of the reply really doesn't sit right at all. Are you saying that what the poster is going through is for the greater good?

I’m saying there is a purpose to lockdown: to suppress virus transmission. If people don’t follow the rules and continue to spread the virus by socialising, it will have been pointless to lock down. The negative effects on the economy will still happen, but there won’t have been the corresponding intended benefit of suppressing the infection rate, so it will have just been all bad.
flowerycurtain · 02/11/2020 18:58

It's not just the families thing. There's so many more businesses that are staying open this time.
I work on a business park with 15 other businesses. Last lockdown 3 remained open and 11 shut down for at least 6 weeks.

All 15 are staying open this time.

SheepandCow · 02/11/2020 18:59

Interesting tweets from the WHO a couple of weeks ago (my bold):

Many cities & countries are also reporting an increase in hospitalizations & intensive care bed occupancy.

At the same time, we must remember that this is an uneven pandemic.

Countries have responded differently, & countries have been affected differently"-
@DrTedros

Almost 70% of all #COVID19 cases reported globally last week were from 10 countries, and almost half of all cases were from just three countries"-

For every country that is experiencing an increase, there are many others that have successfully prevented or controlled widespread transmission with proven measures.

Those measures continue to be our best defence against #COVID19"
