So shutting down everything but keeping schools open.AIBU to think that a lockdown should involve schools closing as well.Have been about six cases in my dds secondary zero social distancing and is just defeating the object of a lockdown as it has now been proven that schools, colleges etc can easily spread the virus.

Let's face it, you weren't. I don't think anyone said their kids are in the way.

Let’s face it. People have.

No I don't think they have , not in the way you said it.
LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 09:35

Yes by refusing to do their jobs which I am categorically not doing.

Are you in front of crowds of people in your job with no PPE?

I’m not refusing to do my job. Happy to do my job with PPE.

mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 09:35

@pigcon1 it was supposed to be mandatory by all schools. Yours got it v v wrong. Every teacher I know around the country was manning key worker hubs at some point. So next time tell us lot on here - I for one would be v happy to convince my colleagues that they have a duty to look after key workers who were keeping the NHS and food, electricity, gas etc supplies going. Thank you fir doing it. Weirdly at the star teachers were t key workers so our own children didn't qualify.

MrsDanvers123 · 01/11/2020 09:36

Yep, closing schools will definitely not reduce any risks whatsoever. Completely agree that, as a teacher, if schools close, I will immediately locate a tiny room with minimal ventilation and place myself with groups of 30 people that change every hour for 5 hours a day. Nope, closing schools will not minimise any risks at all!

Feels like some posters are clutching at straws and spouting hyperbolic nonsense...

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 09:36

Trust
This could go on forever...
They have.

You wearing ppe won't help you though will it? I thought other people wearing ppe helped you?

Personally I don't care if you want to wear a full haz mat suit if it makes you feel better.

1dayatatime · 01/11/2020 09:38

I wonder if some of the posters that are so in n favour of closing schools are from parents sending their children to private schools knowing that if schools do close at least they will have full access to online learning. This educational advantage will translate into higher exam results, university entry and ultimately greater social inequality. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if parents of private school children are massively in favour of closing schools.

Thrownaway · 01/11/2020 09:39

The issue with schools staying open for me is that it means people dont see the sense in following other rules.

Rightly so (imo) an exception has been made for education, but now threads are full of people trying to widen that extention eg well if my kids can socialise with them at school then they can hang out with them at the weekend, well if im mixing at the school gate then i can meet up with them at the park.

It makes me scream inside a bit when i see posts that say well i have three dc's in three schools so im in contact with so many people that why cant i xyz? I dont think those posters think through that then the only alternative is to shut schools

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 09:39

You wearing ppe won't help you though will it? I thought other people wearing ppe helped you?

Nobody is wearing PPE. Nobody is protecting anyone.

Jesus Christ yes I know but you are saying YOU want to wear ppe.
mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 09:40

Well we shall see if not closing schools has any impact in the next month, when pretty much everything else is closed. Figures go down, which I pray they do, fantastic. But I don't think they will. Community transmission in schools will continue and this will spread to the families. I just hope not too many people fall into the 1% of 'oh well, that's not many so not worth worrying about their deaths' category.
I for one will now be teaching in a mask all day. They can fire me but then that's one less teacher in a shortage subject.

True because parents of private schools even get a reduction in fees if school goes online.
Nellodee · 01/11/2020 09:41

@MigGril It would be nice to think they didn't know, and I'm sure it's true of a few posters. However, a lot of them are just goady fuckers who love to insult, patronise and belittle teachers. These posters have been on enough of these threads to know pretty much everything about our working conditions. They just don't give a shit.

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 09:42

You said happy to do your job with PPE you didn't say happy to do your job with all the kids in ppe.

@Flaxmeadow @TrustTheGeneGenie Voila guidance for schools (although Trust I know I have had this conversation with you before).

To think schools should be shut during lockdown.
mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 09:44

@onedayinthefuture no teacher wants schools closed. None that I have ever heard speak. We want schools open safety. I don't understand why people can't hear this.
Rota system. Exam year in every day. 10 & 12 3 days a week and 7,8,9 in 2/3 days a week. We can then teach f2f, set work for them to do at home with no need of remote learning, and socially distance at the same time. It's what many other countries are doing. It's not hard. Would work. And would hopefully keep schools open.

Nellodee · 01/11/2020 09:44

@mumsneedwine, I think cases will slowly drop and eventually this will feed back into increased safety for teachers. However, I think for places that are already at high levels of infection, this will still mean an intolerable level of risk within schools initially. I also think cases will bounce straight back up when the lockdown is released.

OpheliasCrayon · 01/11/2020 09:44

@Ilovegreentomatoes

But the current set up in schools is not working really think we should be looking into blended learning at the very least.
I'm sure someone's pointed it out by now but we have discussed this AT LENGTH, multiple times on the threads in the covid section. Blended learning doesn't work, vulnerable kids need to be in school and I for one am glad to be going to work in the morning.
MigGril · 01/11/2020 09:45

Actually it's a lot of teachers and support staff, who every day have to go into crowed high schools. Stuffed with students who lets face it are effectively adult size. We have a sixth form so some are adults. With virtually no social distancing and no PPE.

It's no wonder as the terms gone on my nerves have gotten worse and I've been hiding in the science preproom.

LolalovesLondon · 01/11/2020 09:45

Trust
Haha. What makes you think I am not "protecting myself"

You wearing ppe won't help you though will it? I thought other people wearing ppe helped you?

How are you protecting yourself trust?

Snap.
mumsneedwine · 01/11/2020 09:46

@OpheliasCrayon but vulnerable kids have always been allowed in school ? Did you not invite them in with key worker students ? It was in the guidance

Ffs I know what the guidance is, but some teachers clearly are wearing PPE so there is obviously some discretion. There is no point in me having an argument with you.
