To think schools should be shut during lockdown.

So shutting down everything but keeping schools open.AIBU to think that a lockdown should involve schools closing as well.Have been about six cases in my dds secondary zero social distancing and is just defeating the object of a lockdown as it has now been proven that schools, colleges etc can easily spread the virus.

if everyone is so keen to keep schools open....then keep them open, no half terms....they FLOOD our store, kids everywhere with parents desperate to get the kids out for a bit

we are not here for a day out!!!

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 20:02

I’ve just noticed you have a secondary age child. So you don’t need to worry about being home 😂

Benjispruce2 · 31/10/2020 20:02

It’s hard going when you keep children apart from other bubbles all day and then they tell you they’ve had a sleepover with various kids over the weekend. Really makes me feel all our efforts are pointless.

GirlCrush · 31/10/2020 20:03

@ShandlersWig

Both DH and I have to work outside the home. What would we do with them for 4 weeks!

And yes, there have been odd cases in our schools but they never developed into clusters so somethings working.

do you not even think about the teachers? just the kids?
doubleshotespresso · 31/10/2020 20:03

OP I think that schools should shut yes, otherwise what are you licking down for?

Tootletum · 31/10/2020 20:04

What is proven is that secondary schools spread the virus, which is pretty obvious since it involves physically adult humans in close contact. The risk needs to be balanced against the very long term harms of educational disruption. Primary schools are not a significant source of infection.

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 20:04

GirlCrush But what do you expect parents to do if schools close? Do you not think of them?

FtmNov22 · 31/10/2020 20:04

They should shut! No consideration has been thought of the teachers being at risk and their family at home! I live with my mum and shes a teacher, I'm due a baby in 3 weeks time and with her still having to go to work what is the point in me staying at home and isolating when shes mixing with 25 others every day who then go home to their families and so on!

KeepHimJolene · 31/10/2020 20:04

I take it you don't have children of secondary school age that need an education OP. Boris et al have made the right call. Shut hospitality, work from home where possible and keep education running

Ilovegreentomatoes · 31/10/2020 20:05

Teachers are always seen as being unreasonable when they voice their concerns .

Nottherealslimshady · 31/10/2020 20:06

Kids need their education above all else

Benjispruce2 · 31/10/2020 20:06

All of the teachers at my school are 50+, a couple 60+ and no ppe. Classes aren’t bigger, we can’t stay 2m away as we’d be outside.

BlackberrySky · 31/10/2020 20:06

The trouble is that none of the boffins have come up with an answer as to how parents are supposed to deliver education at the exact same time as being at work. Doubly difficult if your employer won't allow you unpaid leave, as there is no rule at the moment that says they must. Assuming you could afford that anyway. Also no boffin solution yet as to what children with no access to laptops and printers should do. The promised equipment didn't seem to materialise last time.....

00100001 · 31/10/2020 20:07

Who is going to look after the kids who are normally on school?

megletthesecond · 31/10/2020 20:07

Yanbu.
At the very least they should all be in masks and some staggered time tables.
I don't want my dc's bringing the virus home. I can't parent ill. I have no back up and a violent child.

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 20:08

ilovegreentomatoes So come on, if it’s as simple as closing schools then what’s your suggestion for those of us that don’t have older children that can stay home alone?

I assume you have given that thought as you have gave us your opinion on the matter.

Benjispruce2 · 31/10/2020 20:08

I think Zoom or similar lessons need to be a priority.

00100001 · 31/10/2020 20:08

@FtmNov22

So who is looking after those kids not in school for 4 weeks?
Ratatcat · 31/10/2020 20:08

I think it is more complicated than ‘schools’. Nurseries should stay open - they largely have since June. Primaries again I think on balance need to stay open. However, I’m surprised secondaries haven’t piloted blended learning with exam years prioritised for as much face to face contact as possible . I wouldn't want to go back to months on end with no contact as I think it was damaging for many young people but open v shut feels a bit simplistic.

GarlicSoup · 31/10/2020 20:10

Completely agree - schools should be closed with immediate effect.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 31/10/2020 20:10

Maybe just secondary schools? I think there are more cases there than primary?

OP posts:
Didiusfalco · 31/10/2020 20:11

Working in a secondary is pretty dire in terms of being covid secure. I feel like there is a middle ground that could involve blended learning. I’m surprised the unions haven’t been more active.

Littleposh · 31/10/2020 20:12

yawn

Nicknacky · 31/10/2020 20:12

ilovegreentomatoes Oh, so you haven’t thought it through then? Shocker.

I’m sick of people calling for things when it doesn’t fucking affect them.

timeforanewstart · 31/10/2020 20:13

My son is year 11 doing exams next year so not ideal
Plus schools were never fully closed even last time
