Given a choice of job or granny's life I would pick granny every single time.

Well I'm sorry, but I wouldn't. I'd rather feed my son and keep a roof over his head if it's all the same to you.

@RedToothBrush

Hannah Miller *@hannahitv* NEW: MPs in Greater Manchester have been told the region will get £22m funding as it moves into Tier 3 on Friday night - Andy Burnham describes it as ‘brutal’ *@GranadaReports*

Kate Ferguson @kateferguson4
Andy Burnham denies he has been "showboating" in his stand-off with No10. "there is a point of principle here - can people on minimum wage live off just two thirds?"

If they could have got more should he have budged?

Not sure if that £60m was based on fact

TazMac · 20/10/2020 16:50

Perhaps he's secretly a socialist and has been in very deep cover as a Tory MP for the last, erm, 23 years.

Yeah, must be that, can’t think of anything else. What a good actor Grin.

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 16:51

@VinylDetective

I take the view you cant protect granny if you dont protect jobs

Anyone with more than two functional brain cells takes that view.

Sadly it appears there are lots of people who don't seem to have this.
Flaxmeadow · 20/10/2020 16:54

Andy Burnham does not speak for all of the people of Greater Manchester. It is making uncomfortable viewing listening to these men and woman who claim to speak on our behalf. It is time to stop protesting and accept these measures gracefully like the rest of the country. I am a Mancunian and Manchester is special but not special enough to be so arrogant to think that we should be give special treatment. I don't know anyone round here that is unhappy about further lockdown measures. Given a choice of job or granny's life I would pick granny every single time. We need this lock down - and it should have happened last week - all this delay is going to result in lives being lost. This is not a time for party politcs.

Well said.

Sick of seeing his smug grandstanding, whike cases and deaths increase. Sick of the media calling it "Manchester", when they mean Greater Manchester. Sick of Sick of his whole posturing farce as if nowhere else in the north, including the rest of GM, exists. There are other places up here besides one city, which isn't even then largest city in the north or the most in need of attention.

Andy Burnham does not represent the north, he does not even represent GM. He had no mandate. The vast majority of people in GM did not even vote for him!

He is playing pokitcs with lives

Flaxmeadow · 20/10/2020 16:55

Sorry for typos, but had enough of the damn fool

Ecosse · 20/10/2020 16:55

If you do not have people working and paying taxes, you simply cannot fund the health and care services that granny relies on.

That’s before you even get to the health impacts that unemployment caused by lockdown has in terms of homelessness, malnutrition and impact on DC’s life chances and life expectancy.

tootyfruitypickle · 20/10/2020 16:55

Bloody hell it's like who wants to be a millionaire - if you don't stick at the right point you get nothing. Graham Brady said earlier they were very close so the govt has massively dropped the figure here.

Govt is playing politics here rather than doing the best for the people - unforgiveable.

CrappleUmble · 20/10/2020 16:57

The idea that an alliance comprising not only the directly elected mayor but every single MP and council in the region somehow lacks legitimacy when speaking for GM is hilariously pathetic.

Aragog · 20/10/2020 16:57

Given a choice of job or granny's life I would pick granny every single time.

Unfortunately both my grandmothers died during the last lockdowns, isolated from being able to see their families. One grandmother caught Covid whilst in hospital, alone with visitors not allowed, though neither died of Covid in the end.

Unfortunately with these restrictions some people's grannies are dying alone from other illnesses, or of old age. They are spending their final days lonely and their loved ones are being restricted in how they can even grieve for them afterwards.

For some people it might be a choice of feeding their families or losing their homes. They can keep granny safe by not visiting her, if they working in higher risk areas, if they must.

But why not let granny have a choice too?

Both my grandmothers wanted to see family, not be locked away on their own for their final days,

DuncinToffee · 20/10/2020 16:57

Exactly, GM arguing for adequate financial support means nobody would have to choose job or granny

Ecosse · 20/10/2020 17:00

@Flaxmeadow

What about the deaths and health effects that will be caused by lockdown?

Do they not matter because they’re not caused by COVID?

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 17:00

I will put money on the government trying to give Trafford and bolton and stockport money.

The only problem with that (and i think this is particularly true of Trafford and stockport) is that people there commute to work in other areas in large numbers.

And unless you have a united strategy then putting money into track and trace and enforcement in one council but not others, its not going to work as people are moving about.

Thats completely fucking illogical.

MaxNormal · 20/10/2020 17:01

Given a choice of job or granny's life I would pick granny every single time.

I'd pick having an income every single time. That way, granny's social care also gets funded and I don't lose my home.

augustusglupe · 20/10/2020 17:02

Good speech by Andy Burnham and moving how much he cares.
Another Conservative here who feels completely let down by this government, I'm starting to bloody hate Boris!

No, only covid matters. Lost your job, on the streets, cancer treatment delayed? Any complaints are simply moaning, due to a lack of resilience because we're not living during WW2.
But covid... one can never emote enough about that of course.

CrappleUmble · 20/10/2020 17:02

Maybe Bury too. They're not a Labour stronghold area.
drivinmecrazy · 20/10/2020 17:02

Am I the only one who thought of Citizen Smith when watching Andy Burnham??

DuncinToffee · 20/10/2020 17:03

Seen on twitter that the government is now saying £22m (£8pp) and tier 3 from Friday night, not confirmed.

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 17:03

@oaktree55 are you in Greater Manchester?

CrappleUmble · 20/10/2020 17:03

I hope you remember how you feel now, the way they've let you down and shat on the trust you placed in them next time it comes to vote.
notangelinajolie · 20/10/2020 17:05

The Tory MPs of Greater Manchester were also in agreement

Oh well that makes it ok then Hmm

And thank you for poster who reminded me that Graham Brady is a Tory. I do know that, I voted for him. I do have a mind of my own and I don't happen to agree with him.

I applaud Burnham for saying he will not give up the fight - but that fight needs to be done during and after lock down not before.

Covid is not going to wait until Burnham is happy with his deal. We are in the middle of a Pandemic or has anyone forgotten that.

Flaxmeadow · 20/10/2020 17:05

He's all about the people of Manchester. Which is his job

No that is not his job at all. Instead of playing "king of the north" to a few middle class luvvie city centre types. He is supposed to represent a whole county, GM, not a city.

Ask the people of Rochdale what they think of him, after he ignored the CSE gangs there. Or the people of Staffordshire where he tried brush under the carpet horrendous hospital practices.

People on here calling him a hero. He could have very easily agreed to tier 3 over a week ago, like Liverpool did, and then launched his one man crisade but no. He is playing with lives

Look at the daily UK numbers just released. SMDH
