Will it be a circuit breaker announcement?

OP posts:

Bubbles are my friend

Were those rises in numbers in all areas, just Manchester, in different areas to before?

Whilst it's dreadful that numbers are rising, especially deaths, it's also important to note where numbers are decreasing, especially if those happen to be areas about to have tier 3 imposed.

I don't know today's numbers for GM, but certainly their week in week numbers of cases had declined over the last week at the very least.

Aragog · 20/10/2020 16:31

If they shut down my local because of Sheffield rates before I get to go tomorrow I’ll be pissed off!

Sheffield's numbers (of positive cases) declined over the past week. The number per 100,000 dropped by almost 100.

VinylDetective · 20/10/2020 16:31

@Oaktree55

Ego he’s all about ego. So obvious. You can imagine his negotiating style not conducive to a good outcome. Yet he’s got what he wants his moment in the limelight 🙄
He was already in the limelight. Do you seriously think Johnson’s negotiating style is conducive to a good outcome? Burnham’s stood up for his people. That’s what political responsibility should be about. We’ve seen so little of it lately we fail to recognise a decent leader when we see one.
RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 16:31

@notangelinajolie

Andy Burnham does not speak for all of the people of Greater Manchester. It is making uncomfortable viewing listening to these men and woman who claim to speak on our behalf. It is time to stop protesting and accept these measures gracefully like the rest of the country. I am a Mancunian and Manchester is special but not special enough to be so arrogant to think that we should be give special treatment. I don't know anyone round here that is unhappy about further lockdown measures. Given a choice of job or granny's life I would pick granny every single time. We need this lock down - and it should have happened last week - all this delay is going to result in lives being lost. This is not a time for party politcs.
No he doesn't.

However the 10 councils were all in agreement. That includes the Tory Council of Bolton.

The Tory MPs of Greater Manchester were also in agreement.

Juniperandrage · 20/10/2020 16:32

Ego he’s all about ego u

Unlike our humble servant Boris..

JamieLeeCurtains · 20/10/2020 16:32

@notangelinajolie, it's not about lockdown - that's happening - it's the financial measures necessary to mitigate that's at issue.

ChaChaCha2012 · 20/10/2020 16:32

Given a choice of job or granny's life I would pick granny every single time.

Are you fortunate enough to be able to live without your job? Maybe granny will give you somewhere to live when you become homeless?

TicTacTwo · 20/10/2020 16:32

If there's a circuit breaker I think he'll announce it at 7pm/8pm like when the original lockdown was explained.

I think it will be Manchester T3 because he needs to calm things down before people consider rioting and demonstrating there. If he's unsuccessful, people in regions moving to T3 will expect their leaders to fight their corner like Burnham did. #KingInTheNorth

Saucery · 20/10/2020 16:32

He might be all about ego, I don’t know him, but most politicians are, to some extent.
However, whatever his motivation, he’s standing up to say that jobs and livelihoods need to be protected, so good on him.

JamSarnie · 20/10/2020 16:32

Bloody hell I was god knows what I am now a conservative voter and would vote for Andy Burnham any time with that speech.

Finally someone standing up for businesses as it isn't just covid that causes suffering and deaths.

CrappleUmble · 20/10/2020 16:33

How exactly can Burnham be playing party politics when there's a bipartisan consensus of all elected representatives in GM? The chairman of the 1922 Committee was on the same side as Burnham in the negotiations. Have a think about the significance of that.
tootyfruitypickle · 20/10/2020 16:34

I don't think he's about ego, taking the manchester mayor job was quite a gamble when he did it.

Boris, however , alas , is comprised of nothing but ego

Orangeblossom7777 · 20/10/2020 16:34

Interested to know what the feelings are on here about the Labour push for a shielding programme instead of the Tier 3 restrictions. Haven't seen much discussion on this yet.

TazMac · 20/10/2020 16:34

@notangelinajolie

Have to agree with @CrappleUmble here. Sir Graham Brady is as Tory as Tories come.

unmarkedbythat · 20/10/2020 16:37

Given a choice of job or granny's life I would pick granny every single time.

Given a job of granny's life or feeding my kids I would feed my kids every single time.

Thankfully I am not in the position of having to make such stark choices, but, and I know this comes as a shock to many, some people are.

To sit at home in a house you own or can reliably pay the rent or mortgage on, knowing you have sufficient income to meet your basic needs, and demand that those without the same security go without to protect you may seem entirely reasonable to some. Others will take a different view.

And oh, look, the government has achieved its objective yet again and divided us in order to rule: now instead of looking at the absolute disaster they are enacting we are instead busy arguing over whether people are selfish to demand sufficient financial support when barred from working. Well done, Tories, well done indeed.

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 16:42

You do real that Granny doesn't get social care if theres no support locally to support business etc cos of where revenue for social care comes from, don't you?

Granny therefore either dies of neglect /lack of adequate care or is forced to go live with relatives, who have to give up work to look after her... Which they may have no ability to do whilst keeping food on the table and a roof over heads.

So where do those families who now cant afford their mortgage and are forced to turn to the council for emergency housing...

... Except theres no council housing. And no money from the council to put people up in temporary emergency accommodation. With the kids. And granny.

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 16:42

*realise.

Saucery · 20/10/2020 16:43

It doesn’t even have to be Job v Granny’s Life. We can protect both, with the right support for affected business sectors.

CrappleUmble · 20/10/2020 16:44

Perhaps he's secretly a socialist and has been in very deep cover as a Tory MP for the last, erm, 23 years.

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2020 16:45

I don’t think it’s ego or limelight.

But I do wonder what happens now to support offered. It may be as low as originally stated or the £60m figure I heard bandied around (although not qualified by an MP or Burnham).

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 16:45

I take the view you cant protect granny if you dont protect jobs.
RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 16:46

20 million pounds only government has announced. And they are going to try and pick off individual councils instead...

feellikeanalien · 20/10/2020 16:46

Well I'm in the North East and where I am the numbers are going down but Boris wants us is Tier 3.

Looking at our local village pub which usually has a very full car park for lunch and dinner, it has been practically empty since the local lockdown was announced. So hey, lets go into Tier 3 and completely fuck the hospitality industry in the North East. I heard a guy on the radio this morning who owns various hospitality businesses up here and apparently Newcastle hospitality sector has already lost 20 million since we went into local lockdown and he had had to lay off over 100 staff permanently. Two weeks lockdown will certainly make that worse and quite clearly the government don't give a toss.

People can be unemployed, struggling to pay rent and feed their families, suffer from mental health issues and have normal NHS treatment cancelled but they must be murderers of the elderly to oppose the lockdown.

I am really pissed off how this country is being totally screwed by Boris and his useless band of tossers.

VinylDetective · 20/10/2020 16:46

Anyone with more than two functional brain cells takes that view.

Andy Burnham denies he has been "showboating" in his stand-off with No10. "there is a point of principle here - can people on minimum wage live off just two thirds?"
