Will we follow Wales? I'm pretty sure we will at one point, jusr want to know when!!

Is half term next week for most English kids?

Yeah I think it'll have to be pretty instant to stop the rush out in the days beforehand.

I feel like this government's policy is to delay as long as possible so we're begging for it. I also think they'll do it as late as possible and then make it a bigger one ans get us out in time for Christmas so it makes them look good. And then it's spring and vaccines will start making some hopeful headway, even if it's minor.

No Circuit breaker or lockdown will work unless
EVERYTHING closes

  • supermarkets
  • takeaways
  • food processing plants
  • chemists
because the low paid workers in those industries will continue to mix and spread the virus

The rich folks ordering their ready meals from Ocado forget that millions of people are working in crowded conditions day and night to produce that
and passing and catching COVID

Lockdowns will not work unless they are total

toxtethOgradyUSA · 20/10/2020 11:09

It won't just be 2 weeks. Anybody who actually believes that has not been paying attention.

Brighterthansunflowers · 20/10/2020 11:57

I think england will have a too little too late half arsed attempt at a circuit break with a lot more remaining open than in the welsh version. And it therefore won’t work and everyone will be even more against a repeat of it

The area of wales I’m in hasn’t had consistently had 50-60 cases per 100,000 over 7 days yet has been in local lockdown and will shortly be in national lockdown. In England my area would still be tier 1. It’s frustrating but I’m glad cases haven’t shot up here yet like in some of our nearby counties. And bear in mind, even the worst areas in wales are 200somthing cases per 100,000 in 7 days not 500-800something like parts of England have. It looks like wales is worse on the maps of high risk areas because the welsh threshold for taking action is much lower than the English one.

Brighterthansunflowers · 20/10/2020 11:58

Sorry I meant to say “the area of Wales I’m in has consistently had 50-60 cases per 100,000 people over 7 days” not the garbled sentence I actual posted!

myrtilles · 20/10/2020 12:03

@SheepandCow

Another tweet from Prof Reicher. Worth noting.

Infection rates are up in every area and in every age group. Hospitalisations and ICU usage is sharply up. We are about to lose control of the pandemic and half-hearted actions won't get it back. The tier system was a good idea in theory, bungled in practice, now out of time.

Infections aren't up in every area. eg. Rates have been falling in Manchester.
toxtethOgradyUSA · 20/10/2020 12:08

I am against lockdowns generally but I think if we were going to do one, the evidence suggests the sweet spot has passed (a bit like we were too late first time round). If we do one now, it will be the worst of both worlds: no significant impact yet we still get the negative economic and social consequences. That said, while the government must surely know this, it won't stop them as we all know this is and has been political from day one. There is no way BJ will allow Scotland, Wales and Ireland to steal his thunder on this issue.

Aragog · 20/10/2020 12:19

The Welsh and Irish circuit breakers are keeping schools open at least

Ignoring the fact that schools ARE being affected by lots of closures, and quite likely it's passing around schools at both primary and secondary. Just that children aren't showing symptoms so aren't being tested.

I'm currently ill with Covid. The most likely place I've caught it is school (infants) as it's the only place I'm having close contact outside my household. Dh and 18y dd have had no symptoms and not had close contact with people who have symptoms or positive.

School -we have 7 teaching staff now positive (I've not had close contact with any) No children positive, but lots with colds. Some parents have tested positive, including those with children in the affected classes. is it just coincidence?

Aragog · 20/10/2020 12:20

Would make more sense to have two week covering half term, and having schools closed during that time - an extra week of no school, but with remote learning in place for that week.

Popcornriver · 20/10/2020 12:33

Yes even if it's just in the worst hit areas that are seeing a significant rise in the need for critical care beds.

Obviously we can't close supermarkets and food processing plants fgs Hmm
But we can slow the spread and decrease the R number.

ListeningQuietly · 20/10/2020 13:35

Popcorn
So its a circuit breaker that makes no real attempt to break the circuit
just increases the resistance a bit and kicks the can down the road

when we are less than 75 days from the end of Transition

great

Illy603 · 20/10/2020 13:50

Why is it whenever there is a post like this, someone pipes up and accuses people of revelling in the thought of another lockdown?!

People just want answers. Everything’s been so up in the air for months not knowing what’s happening or what will happen.

Personally, I really don’t want another lockdown. It would be catastrophically bad for my job sector and thousands of other people’s. But if it is the only way we can get in control of the growing numbers of infections, you’re damn right I will comply and go along with it.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/10/2020 13:56

Because there are a handful of lazy footholds into the debate that give the approximation of thought..."we have to learn to live with the virus", "you are revelling in it", "sheeple" etc.

Popcornriver · 20/10/2020 15:19

ListeningQuietly

What is your suggestion for getting food and medicine to people?

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 20/10/2020 15:26

just increases the resistance a bit and kicks the can down the road

I thought that was the whole point.

Keep kicking each time numbers reach the levels that could overwhelm NHS in your region. Get through winter with no-where being overwhelmed. Have 6 months more information on both virus (and how to treat it, and what long Covid really means) and vaccine (really in the offing?) and the warmer weather with stronger sun.

Start to transition towards either a vaccinated population or a way to live with a newish endemic and potentially serious disease.

Some people judge others by their own shrivelled, blackened souls.
ListeningQuietly · 20/10/2020 15:59

Popcorn
I do not think there should be a lockdown.
Certainly not one with a stupid name like circuit breaker

My personal view is that Track and Trace needs to be handed back to local authorities in its entirety
and all the testing back to local labs in its entirety
and then each area can find out where and how their cases are happening
and design interventions and support that bring the virus under control in that area

The London diktats are based on broken spreadsheets
and political bungs
hence why the gyms and amusement parks in Blackpool (Tier 3) are open Tory MP
but the gyms in Liverpool (Tier 3) are shut Labour MP

Its based on arrogance not evidence

ToftyAC · 20/10/2020 17:50

It would make no difference to us. My husband would still be SAHD to provide child care for our 6yo and I would still be going to work & doing shopping. It’s what we’ve done all through.

Rainbowsparkle · 20/10/2020 17:57

In London at least I think they need to including shutting the transport system down. I travelled on the underground today for the first time since March. It was heaving

ListeningQuietly · 20/10/2020 17:59

How are people supposed to get to work then?

What? The roads would be immovable. You might get more bike riders but not enough.
riceuten · 20/10/2020 18:10

Only if there is a proper track and trace system introduced. Completely pointless otherwise

WendyE · 20/10/2020 18:29

I think it's a no really.
Many schools are on HT already so too late.

FelicisNox · 20/10/2020 18:32

We will, it's a question of when.

Rainbowsparkle · 20/10/2020 18:51

If non essential businesses are shut then you’d be surprised how dead central London is as it was during lockdown
