Absolutely not.

To clarify, those numbers I gave aren't current cases, they are total number of people with a positive test result since beginning of pandemic.

The critical point is bed capacity imo.

@CousinLucy - you will be pleased to know we've cancelled our much looked forward to break in Cornwall for our half term.

We still half expect a last minute decision from government which would put more places in lockdown but with having kids, inc sen kids, we needed to make a definite decision. as we also had extra adults on our booking which took us over the rule of 6 from one household, they're letting us transfer the holiday to next year instead.

If we don't soon we will have to in a few weeks, the NHS will be overwhelmed.

As a teacher I'm torn. Cases are rising in my school. But I can only see family and have medical appointments during holidays so will be annoyed if I'm ok mixing with hundreds of kids one week and then sat in my house doing nothing another when I cant take time off term time for dentist etc..

I think there’s no need for a full nation circuit breaker.
It’s a shame we can’t do whole city/area circuit breakers instead. I know many people don’t want to see the whole nation go into lockdown and considering some areas are doing really well with lowering cases it makes sense. However, don’t forget there are some areas where cases are really high and schools are sending whole year groups home on a weekly basis. In these areas some people are still not wearing masks in super markets and social distancing is still being ignored. They are via talk putting others at risk who have no choice but to go out and about their daily lives as usual. As most work places and all schools are open now and a lot of previously shielding individuals are not allowed to shield anymore, people are actually very afraid of catching it and most would welcome a full lockdown in their areas only.

We’re on half term now. Would’ve been better to coincide with that.

Jenrick said no this morning on R4. Government message still pointing to local areas.

@ktp100

If they're going to do it it needs to be over half term, which means we'd need to know by friday because some of us are already on it!!

Some of us are already on half term . Based in the South Wast and ours broke up Friday

As usual, the PM will bend to the will of whomever shouts the loudest. It’s all about political point scoring rather than an actual want to control the virus.

In any case, they can certainly try but I’m opting out if they do.

I could be wrong but I'd be surprised if there is one. The political will isn't there to pay for it. And the picture varies so much across the country that it feels counterintuitive to have a single, blunt off-switch across the whole nation.

The cynic in me says the March one was politically and financially expedient because it was largely affecting London.

The cynic in me also thinks that a degree of fuckaboutery for the next few weeks is extremely helpful to this government to muddy the waters around Brexit.

I don’t think soo but Wales will be interesting to watch in particular they are not shutting schools for younger children and they are saying that it def will be for a short period. Be interesting to see if they stuck to those decisions and if they did set a precedent for any further English lockdown (I refuse to use the term circuit breaker..you don’t get to claim your fling something different by using another name😂!)

I anticipate it will go on longer (no lockdown is ever two weeks not one that works!) but the schools issue is interesting and I think may mean a lot of pressure to keep English primaries open going forward.

I wouldn’t have thought they would fussing so much about Manchester if they were going to lock everyone down.

I really hope not. Not sure my mental health can take even a two week lockdown circuit breaker. Rates are coming down in the Tier 3 areas so surely that’s the way to go

It is, but the government is stupid if it thinks people will link a sudden reduction in products on shelves in January with covid, when it has been largely fine, with a few high profile exceptions (loo roll, flour) all year.

Kids on half term this week, though mine are past that age now. As there's only one case in my area according to data updated today, why do we need to lockdown???

If we're willing to do this for a virus with the same survival rate as flu in the under 70s, then presumably we're willing to do this for all the other seasonal viruses. So unless you're happy to live this life forever, so called circuit breakers are utter rubbish.

Bed capacity not always right option Herts higher numbers tier 1 as in theory more beds
Essex lower numbers tier 2 capcity issues

We are Herts our closes hospitals are Essex by about an hour

Again, we are back to feelings. Is this a thread about what we think will happen or just whining on about what we'd like to happen?

They assured us that we will only be 2 weeks and that they don't expect the figures to go down in that time.

Honestly I'm not sure what the purpose is. Basically shops and restaurants will close, but schools expect those doing their GCSEs will be open. Reality is for most of us it will be the same anyway. Kids go to school, people will go to work, we just can't go to restaurants.

He said Halloween and fireworks are cancelled but remembrance celebrations can go ahead.

It's just seems to be aimed at restaurants and hairdressers really, In our area we weren't allowed to socialise anyway.

They say schools are safe but I'd like to know how many cases are from hairdressers for example. It just doesn't make sense and GCSE students are the ones to suffer again.
