I feel the government will just bring in more tier 3 neighbourhoods instead of any circuit breaker.

you never hear of londoners telling people on the threads saying how quiet london is, shall i visit, nobody ever says Stay Away from London, we like it like this! Hmm

@TwentyViginti

Matt Hancock says he is having talks with south Yorkshire, west Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, the north-east and Teesside about moving into tier 3, as well as the ongoing talks with GM .

So I don't think a national lockdown is on the cards.

It wasn’t on the cards last time until suddenly it was.

Can easily see us ending up with ‘not a national lockdown’. Where everyone ends up in tier 3 except the Isles of Scilly and some small town in the arse end of nowhere.

I don’t see any evidence that test & trace is improving fast enough or that the government are encouraging as many people as possible to self isolate if necessary. Without those in place I can’t see anyway of avoiding widespread ‘lockdowns’.

@AgreeableEagle

I agree it's the uncertainty that's the nuisance. I just want to know.

I'm supposed to be leaving my Tier 1 area to go on holiday to another Tier 1 area on Friday, staying in self contained self catering accommodation, in the middle of nowhere. It's as safe as staying at home for me.

I need a break and a change of scenery. I've been doing 10-12 hour days all year and have had Easter off and two other days. I've already had one holiday cancelled that I've only just got my money back from from April. I'm tired, fed up of looking at the same 4 walls and need to recharge so I'm praying that they don't do it. The closer and closer I get to the end of the week the more confident I'll be, but it wouldn't surprise me if the government threw it at us with little notice.

I really hope you get to go away - it sounds like you need it Flowers

Why is there always such a separatist attitude from the Cornish on threads like these? Don’t come down here, we’ve enjoyed having the place to ourselves, stay away, don’t bother coming.........unless of course you’re going to give us your money. FFS

Because there’s a fear of numbers rising here in the SW but also a fear that so many businesses could go under if people don’t come. I don’t want people coming here from high risk areas, we are in a area with hardly any cases, I don’t think it’s safe that many people will flock here during half term from tier 2 and tier 3 areas but I feel for the hotels, camp sites and restaurants that rely on tourism.

and the Lake District,
is that ok to go there?

Report
NotAKaren · 19/10/2020 17:56

No, it would be too complicated to come back out of it after two weeks and a lot longer is needed to suppress the numbers. What would be the threshold for coming out or would restrictions lift regardless? Would areas in already in T3 remain in this after the two weeks if cases hadn't fallen? There would be uproar.

What I do think is needed is maybe a revised rule of 6 stop households mixing (6 people from 6 households is daft) and perhaps asking people not to travel over half term, oh and also a reminder to parents to keep their teens from having parties for Halloween.

I think they've left it too late because some areas (and many private schools) have already started half term. It should have begun today for 2 weeks - so most pupils get half term + 1, not half term then 2

Ethelfleda · 19/10/2020 17:58

Lovemusic but people in the higher tiers are advised against leaving their area unless for essential purposes. Our rates here are about as low as they are in Cornwall - so I wouldn’t see the problem in going.
Although I won’t because I damn well wouldn’t feel welcome!!

But everyone feels the same about their patch, @Lovemusic33. The strain/fear of transmission is not unique to the SW

I can see this happening too. A long drawn out process with 'talks' with each council targeted.

300m support package for Wales. Where is this coming from?

‘Short, sharp and deep lockdown’ but it’s not as deep as original one is it? And the first one took ages to decrease numbers.

why will it magically work anywhere else ?

Leicester haven't been locked down for about 3 months.

They locked down for a few weeks in July before their pubs and restaurants etc reopened again in August (a few weeks later than everywhere else) and then the kids and students etc went back in September.

@NastyBlouse

I could be wrong but I'd be surprised if there is one. The political will isn't there to pay for it. And the picture varies so much across the country that it feels counterintuitive to have a single, blunt off-switch across the whole nation.

The cynic in me says the March one was politically and financially expedient because it was largely affecting London.

The cynic in me also thinks that a degree of fuckaboutery for the next few weeks is extremely helpful to this government to muddy the waters around Brexit.

Totally agree.

No lockdown needed where I live. Cases are relatively low and, looking at the latest figures, are actually dropping slightly. I still only know one person who has tested positive for Covid and that was back in March. My teenagers don't know anyone who has tested positive. Absence rates at the secondary school I work in are no higher than normal for this time of year.

The government don't really need it to work in Leicester - it's just containment by other means.

Why did the North East need to lock down back in March?

Report
OrangeSamphire · 19/10/2020 18:23

Really hope we don't get another lockdown.

But it's easy to say that sitting here in Cornwall where cases are lower, generally people have access to outside space very readily and it's easy to social distance on beaches etc. It doesn't feel necessary to lockdown.

I guess it might start to feel necessary if cases are very high in other parts of the country and there is a risk of transmission happening in Cornwall during half term holidays that then exacerbates the issue nationally.

@Malteserdiet

Exactly *@PickAChew*

The Welsh lockdown has been sold by the media as an effort ‘to buy time to protect the overstretched health services” Well how much time do they need? We’ve had this thing for the best part of a year and so, in my opinion, well enough time to prepare for another winter season to coincide with all the other standard viruses that will be about this year. Apparently they got several nightingale hospitals ready for April within weeks so why aren’t they still ready?

Apparently there is a technical glitch with the cloning machines for doctors and nurses. Several came out with the heads of flys.
