Is half term next week for most English kids?

Seems futile shutting businesses and shops when they are not where the majority of cases lie.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 19/10/2020 17:15

Tootletum, it’s not the same survival rate as flu.

And in any case it’s not a choice, we’ve got covid and flu and a run-down NHS.

Soo.... England circuit breaker?
JellyBabiesSaveLives · 19/10/2020 17:18

FourTeaFallOut. It’s a thread about what we’d like. I’d like free chocolate please. I’d also like someone to put some grown-ups in charge.

ifonly4 · 19/10/2020 17:18

Unless numbers go up drastically in the next few days, I think the government will want a true indication of whether the new tier system helps and to what extent. Lots of schools here are already on their half term break, so won't fit in with a school break.

Also, Boris said he didn't agree with shutting down the whole country when some areas had really low rates. Makes sense to keep their local economy going and taxes being paid as long as possible, which will obviously tip over into other areas with people buying stuff online from elsewhere, going on holiday when they can etc.

This guy explains it much more eloquenty than me and even mentions the R rate and growth which seems to be a big no no to some minimers on here.

There isn't an easy answer but he is quite convincing.

RigaBalsam · 19/10/2020 17:25

Jeremy Farrer also discusses why a National approach is better.

FourTeaFallOut · 19/10/2020 17:26

Oh, go on then. I'll play. I think that those on lower incomes should get 80% of their income when the government intervenes in the usual running of the market and closes down their place of work to protect the wider populus. I'd also like free chocolate and some grown ups in charge.

PickAChew · 19/10/2020 17:26

To what aim? Do slow down the rise? Because the goalposts will shift and we'll never get out of it, again.

JS87 · 19/10/2020 17:29

@Tootletum

If we're willing to do this for a virus with the same survival rate as flu in the under 70s, then presumably we're willing to do this for all the other seasonal viruses. So unless you're happy to live this life forever, so called circuit breakers are utter rubbish.
It doesn't have the same survival rate as flu for over 70s though and it's also got a much higher hospitalisation rate than flu. Also, once your hospitals reach capacity then the mortality rate increases for the under 70s as they can no longer get the critical care they need.
Malteserdiet · 19/10/2020 17:31

Exactly @PickAChew

The Welsh lockdown has been sold by the media as an effort ‘to buy time to protect the overstretched health services” Well how much time do they need? We’ve had this thing for the best part of a year and so, in my opinion, well enough time to prepare for another winter season to coincide with all the other standard viruses that will be about this year. Apparently they got several nightingale hospitals ready for April within weeks so why aren’t they still ready?

annabel85 · 19/10/2020 17:31

After next week we'll have missed half term - for any lockdown - so they'd have to take the kids out of school for it to make any difference which they're rightly desperate to avoid.

Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 17:32

I get the feeling that some on here have no idea of the impact of this on people's lives

JamminDoughnuts · 19/10/2020 17:33

i'm not a big fan of Cornwall tbh but the tourist industry is pretty good for them

FourTeaFallOut · 19/10/2020 17:34

Why?

Because now that Wales have a circuit breaker - if it proves successful to keep their NHS beds open for much longer - they'll have to spend the next election explaining why England didn't bother. It's bad pr.

That's where we are in tier 3. Most cases are traced back to school and university (cases where near zero here in August and exploded in September) and the solution is just to shut pubs but Wetherspoons can stay open. Oh and unenforced rules about who you can and can't visit which people don't really take any notice of.
TwentyViginti · 19/10/2020 17:36

Matt Hancock says he is having talks with south Yorkshire, west Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, the north-east and Teesside about moving into tier 3, as well as the ongoing talks with GM .

So I don't think a national lockdown is on the cards.

QuimReaper · 19/10/2020 17:42

I don't anticipate a national lockdown whilst some parts of the country have such low infection rates, but travel restrictions would make a lot of sense in combination with the tier system.

It will be if and when tier 3's half arsed measures are found to be useless.

Half term should slow the curve a bit though which could give a false sense of security going into November.

NailsNeedDoing · 19/10/2020 17:45

I’d rather have a lockdown than go along with restrictions that are supposed to make life vaguely normal when it’s not. I’d rather have lockdowns mixed with real normality, like being allowed assemblies and such like in schools, entertainment venues and theatres being properly open without time restrictions and weddings and funerals be allowed to go ahead without limited numbers.

Lovemusic33 · 19/10/2020 17:47

I don’t think any one ‘wants’ a lockdown but I’m sure most people ‘want’ to spend Christmas with their loved ones?

For me it’s the not knowing that’s driving me nuts, today I had my half term break cancelled (in Wales), I don’t know if I can holidays somewhere else in the uk because I don’t know what restrictions will be in place by next week. My kids don’t know how long half term will be, many people don’t know if they will have a job to go too next week. If we know what’s happening then we can deal with it but I feel we are not being told anything until the last minute. The people of Wales have the rest of this week to prepare, yes some might go crazy and go out more but I’m sure most will be sensible and just prepare to work at home.

Iris101 · 19/10/2020 17:48

Why is there always such a separatist attitude from the Cornish on threads like these? Don’t come down here, we’ve enjoyed having the place to ourselves, stay away, don’t bother coming.........unless of course you’re going to give us your money. FFS

NeverForgetYourDreams · 19/10/2020 17:49

Hope not. We've got very low levels here and seems a bit rotten

AgreeableEagle · 19/10/2020 17:50

I agree it's the uncertainty that's the nuisance. I just want to know.

I'm supposed to be leaving my Tier 1 area to go on holiday to another Tier 1 area on Friday, staying in self contained self catering accommodation, in the middle of nowhere. It's as safe as staying at home for me.

I need a break and a change of scenery. I've been doing 10-12 hour days all year and have had Easter off and two other days. I've already had one holiday cancelled that I've only just got my money back from from April. I'm tired, fed up of looking at the same 4 walls and need to recharge so I'm praying that they don't do it. The closer and closer I get to the end of the week the more confident I'll be, but it wouldn't surprise me if the government threw it at us with little notice.

m0therofdragons · 19/10/2020 17:52

Our local hospital has one patient. Obviously I hope they make a full recovery but I don’t think that’s a reason to lockdown our area just so places where prevalence is high don’t feel targeted. I’m sure we’ll get our turn at some point and then a lock down would be appropriate. The only reason for a full lockdown is politically motivated because media are pressing for one.

Iris101 · 19/10/2020 17:53

There was one Cornish poster who branded tourists “parasites” on a previous thread earlier this year......because they were there, clogging up the beaches but couldn’t spend their money in the cafes/shops so he said they were pretty much nothing more than parasites. This attitude seems to be so prevalent amongst the Cornish; it’s a shame because you do need to at least pretend to like “the others,” as your industry needs their cash
