Thank you to those who have contributed to the good news thread over the past few weeks. We are at 40 pages so here is a new one to continue sharing good news stories :)

Ie that we’d be the only ones for some reason

Here’s the link The Guardian

cathyandclare · 12/12/2020 08:52

That's good news Marsha. I have to come on this thread to reduce my blood pressure after reading some of the others!

sashagabadon · 12/12/2020 09:01

Yes. So it was good that the U.K. approved this vaccine first then! As if the US were never going to do the exact same thing and the EU will approve it too.
Looks like it is not going to be a smooth ride for all the vaccines though. GSK are casting doubts in their vaccine. The uni of Queensland has stopped its trials. So the ones that do work are going to become even more vital as others fall by the wayside.

sashagabadon · 12/12/2020 09:04

Personally I think there are a lot of professional trolls on men who job it is to post negatively. There are a few you see all the time banging the same drum and then they disappear. You see it for Brexit threads too and I am sure other topics that I probably don’t follow so notice less.

FuzzyPuffling · 12/12/2020 09:07

I think that the fact that GSK/ Sanofi and the Australian one haven't fulfilled promise show that any working vaccine ( even if it's undergoing further tweaking) is a marvellous thing.

My group of GPs ( five practices joined together) are beginning community vaccination next week. ( Although apparently they have 975 vaccines for 3400 over 80s!) But it's on its way. And we are very rural Cornwall, so not a handy near-a-hospital town.

sashagabadon · 12/12/2020 09:27

Good luck next week Fuzzy. That’s still a quarter of over 80’s being vaccinated so an excellent start.

FuzzyPuffling · 12/12/2020 09:32

I'm Cat 6 and DH a Cat 4, so it will take a while to filter down...but yes, good news that it's coming.
The practice group had a dummy run with flu vaccines to test the practicalities, and have asked people to make sure they have transport arranged in good time.

blametheparents · 12/12/2020 09:39

The Novavax Phase 3 trial has been approved to go ahead in the US. This vaccine candidate is being tested in phase three trials in the UK already and is a favourite with many well respected scientists.

Yes, and I would hope it gives pause to the posters who have made out the UK government’s relying on the Oxford vaccine to be a failure.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/12/2020 09:59

Genes hold clue to why some people get more severely ill

I think this is exciting.
Anyone else feel like we’re at a time of massive medical and scientific advances, like in the war?
Immune problems are so poorly understood that I can’t help thinking there will probably be eventual benefits to people with other conditions.

bloodpressureboiling · 12/12/2020 11:55

I'm a regular poster on this thread, and a full supporter of the vaccine. I've had to change my user name as I nearly lost it with the ignorance of some of the anti vaxxers on other threads. I know I know. The best way to deal is to ignore. And to report. I urge you all to report them.
Anyway, please keep the good news coming. This thread is my sanity.

On a personal level of good news, I’m just about to call around to see my 87 year old Dad because he’s had a text from his GP surgery asking him to reply in order to book his Covid vaccine, but he can’t get to grips with texting so I need to sort it for him.

I’m so relieved. Despite his age he was very active until March but he’s hardly left the house since then.

Excellent point, thank god we have the Oxford one. Actually so far the U.K.‘a vaccine task force have predicted pretty successfully. New Zealand for example are banking in 2 vaccines, a relatively small amount of Pfizer and Janssen which won’t be ready till September and what if like the Australian one it fails!? If I were in New Zealand right now I’d be very worried about this strategy of just backing 2 and trying to get my hands on the Oxford vaccine or the moderna one pretty sharpish.

My mother in law got her appointment 23rd Dec. Just in time for Christmas Smile
tootyfruitypickle · 12/12/2020 14:13

So great to hear about 80 somethings getting appointments !

chri55ie · 12/12/2020 14:13

Yes I agree re vaccines....thank god the first few have been successful. If the first two had been the Aussie one and the GSK one I would have been really anxious about how we were ever going to get back to normal. The vaccine task force have done a good job of spreading the risk. I really hope Oxford gets approved next week fingers crossed

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2020 14:18

Yes agree completely with vaccine points.

In general the rhetoric about UK being the worst at everything is overblown on here and a lot of self loathing to boot. It’s a shame when there’s a lot of expertise.

Which does a disservice to the incredible effort here. Of course international effort is fantastic and scientific co operation really emotionally moving. But other countries get a more positive run down.

sashagabadon · 12/12/2020 14:28

Yes it is overblown in here but really is quite a few of the same posters determined to see the absolute worst in everything. Must be exhausting!
I told my mother in law in June she’d be vaccinated by Xmas - I didn’t really believe it, I was 70% sure but turns out I was right by a day Grin
She’d told all her friends what I said and they now think I am a wise sage. I’m not of course just an optimist by nature and sometimes things do work out ok Smile

chri55ie · 12/12/2020 14:42

There was one particular poster who I think really enjoyed putting the fear of God into everyone. He used to write such terrifying things with complete conviction. I avoided all the threads apart from this one

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2020 14:45

I could handle his somehow just avoided threads or could see clearly they were one person’s opinion.

It’s more posters who jump on everything - eg we’ve approved the vaccine first so yes definitely rushed and a mistake. Doesn’t come to pass and on to next bit of doom and gloom!

Drugs and treatments always seem to be a bit the "bridesmaid" to vaccines in the news; you don't get enough focus. But, of course, they are essential!

That sounds amazing, although I'm not sure I quite understand how it would work.
