@Daftapath

I wonder whether they will want to keep those who have had the vaccine in the study for as long as possible so they can see how long the vaccine works for?

I haven't heard anything from the study except an email confirming my 4th appointment on 9th.

What I thought as they def cannot tell that it gives long term immunity yet surely?

I went into Bradford for an appointment on Friday. The doctor said they would unblind shortly and are hoping to invite placebo people back for the vaccine from mid February. Essentially the trial starts again for former placebo people once they receive the active vaccine.

Ooh I see. But the people who got it originally carry on? I can see how they aren’t necessarily doing this everywhere

This would be brilliant and makes good sense in terms of them continuing the study for post vaccine research

Jbm - great news. Good to have a date.

I really hope the Bradford approach is nationwide. It makes a lot of sense because it means they get to retain a trial which changes focus but bolsters their results looking at diminishing antibody levels and the need for boosters etc. Otherwise by July / August they might not have anyone left other than the original active vaccine group. On the vaccination calculator it has me as having my first dose in the summer and I'm the lowest group as far as I know.

John Wright has just posted this on Twitter;

Vaccine clinic today. Last week I was promising that we would be unblinding and giving the placebo group the #Novavax vaccine

This week- all change - it’s now it’s a crossover trial.

Wondering what the participant consultation has been for this

What does that mean? I’m going this afternoon to Bradford.
Frazzled2207 · 01/02/2021 08:40

@JPLeeds
Oh. Is this Bradford again?
I’m at Stockport. Appointment Friday.

Yep it's Bradford. I'm at Bradford now waiting for a group update from Jon Wright. Sounds like it has all changed this weekend Hmm

JPLeeds · 01/02/2021 09:18

I believe he is part of the Bradford trial. I've not heard anything from Leeds but I do have my 3 month check up in 2 weeks time.

Frazzled2207 · 01/02/2021 09:39

@Yorkie127
Hopefully you’ll get some clarity today- exciting stuff

Slightly off topic this was an interesting development given that valneva is still
Months away. I wonder if they are considering beefing up novavax order. From the guardian

In the UK, the government has ordered an extra 40m doses of the Valneva Covid-19 vaccine.

The move means 100m doses of Valneva have been put on order, enough for every adult in the UK, with the latest batch earmarked for delivery in 2022. The government has also retained options over a further 90m doses for supply between 2023 and 2025.

Valneva said the total value of the entire order was up to €1.4bn (£1.24bn). The vaccine is still in clinical trials, with the early-stage phase 1/2 study expected to read out within the next three months.

So....the update from this morning at Bradford is that things have changed with the trial protocol, so they can monitor over a long period.

They're changing to a crossover trial which means they won't unblind til the end. Instead, everyone will be invited back for a further two jabs (placebo people will get the real thing and vice versa). They will get everyone back in within the next month or so for the first of the two jabs and everyone will get 2 with the three week interval.

Effectively everyone in the trial will have had the real vaccine but you won't know if you had it first or second.

I didn't sign up to get an early jab but I'm quite chuffed!

MrsHamlet · 01/02/2021 10:33

Well that's exciting!!! Is that everyone at every site, do you know, or just Bradford?

Frazzled2207 · 01/02/2021 10:36

thats fab

OP posts:
Yorkie127 · 01/02/2021 10:39

@MrsHamlet I'm not sure. He referred to 'the trial' so I guess everyone but I guess they could vary it (but I suspect not...).

GreenPlum · 01/02/2021 10:41

Echoing the above. Brilliant news re crossover.

Just Bradford or the rest of the UK too?

I've got my 3 month appt in Leeds on Thursday.

Ah ok. (Cross post!) Thanks for sharing the news!

MrsHamlet · 01/02/2021 10:49

I'm not back in Chorley 'til March. I want to go now!!!!!

Frazzled2207 · 01/02/2021 10:49

Minor detail but I suspect everyone might not agree as it will more appointments/time taken? Are they ok if you choose not to continue?
I will say yes without hesitation if this involves me

GreenPlum · 01/02/2021 11:12

John Wright is tweeting estimated 2 weeks til approval then 3-4 weeks to get through everyone.

Daftapath · 01/02/2021 11:16

I would be over the moon for this to happen! Keeping everything crossed this means all of us and not just Bradford - although fab for everyone in Bradford.

AVictoryProduct · 01/02/2021 11:52

Does anyone know what this means? What is a crossover trial and what does it mean for us?

MrsHamlet · 01/02/2021 11:55

I'm a bit confused by the people on Twitter worrying about this. Surely it can only be a good thing? Or am I being really thick??
