novavax vaccine trial - anyone else?

Have just had the call and am going tomorrow. Very excited. Anyone else doing this?

This is all so interesting, thanks so much to those sharing info. I have my next appt in 2 days so will let you know if I hear anything different from what has been said here about the crossover.

I have been unblinded because I was called to go for my first dose of whatever the doctor is giving and I was given the Novavax vaccine not the placebo. I will continue with the trial because they obviously need to see how long the antibodies last

Good to hear - did you suspect either way? I am convinced I had the placebo as I had zero side effects, not even a sore arm.

How do you feel about being jabbed again given that you are fairly certain you had the real stuff?

@Frazzled2207 no concerns at all - happy to help, and gives me full confidence that I will actually have had the active vaccine at some point. Excited to stay in the trial and hopefully stay involved in some of the sub-groups they have planned for the autumn.

I did think that I might have had it because on the way home after the second jab I became very shivery and my arm was so sore that every time I lay on that side in bed it woke me up.

Novavax did not want to unblind me when I rang this morning, the man on the phone to!d me that I could not be unbounded until the end of the study. I said that in that case I would simply leave the study and take up my doctor's invitation to have the jab because I heard on the tv that having 2 different vaccines would not cause harm. He then said he would get a doctor to call me to tell me what my options were. The doctor did call me and unblind me over the phone. I will still go to my appointment tomorrow because I know that they need to keep checking blood to see how long the antibodies last. I am not sure if I would do this again in the future after my experience today.

I got told the rules over unblinding ppl over the phone has changed. So no idea if that's why the volunteer got it wrong.

Ive always thought i got it as i had side effects. It'll be embarassing if i had the placebo and this time i get worse/ or no effects.

Im happy to continue as I'd prefer Novovax over Pfizer or Oxford. 2 more injections not so much fun.

Im assuming they'll call as my next blood appt is not til June

So how do they unblind you then? Especially if time is of the essence and you're called because of left over vaccine?

If I get a call before the second round of injections and they refuse to unblind me I won't be happy at all.

I was told at my appointment yesterday that I should call them if I was offered an nhs vaccine before the next trial injections. So they know that some people will need to unblind in the meantime. Odd that the person you spoke to in the phone got it wrong

I dont know how long it takes to unblind somebody. But i think tbe Dr on call would have to do it. K dont think tbey were exoecting to do it due to volunteers or ppl getting leftover doses. They expected it to be planned NHS appts.
The talk of Novovax isnt confirmed but its April at the latest as far as i know.

I was told last week that they can unblind within an hour - the example given was that if your GP surgery rang and offered you a last minute appointment.

They have a separate team for unblinding as all the medics working face to face with us 'trialees' (lead consultant, doctors and nurses) are all blind too. Hence a double blind study.

oh dear @Potter53 that sounds very wrong. We were told as @andadietcoke suggested no problem with unblinding and in fact they seemed to recommend it if we got called up for Pfizer/AZ in the next few weeks (most of the people there when I was there were in their 60s and a bit anxious about this).

@Frazzled2207When I threatened to just go and get the jab that my doctor was asking me to go for the man who was telling me that I couldn't be unblinded decided that he would ask a doctor to call me. When the doctor called he took seconds to actually unblocked me so it does not take long if you actual l get someone who knows what they are doing.
I have an appointment this morning so I am going to report this because experiences like this could be a reason that some people are dropping out of the trial.
