Well done and huge thanks to everyone who took part in the trial to enable this vaccine to work Flowers

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 29/01/2021 09:57

I’ve had a call from the trial this morning asking me to go in on Monday for my antibody test - should have been on 11th but they’ve got some spare appointments. The nurse was really excited and said they’re all thrilled at how well it has gone.
She said no change to the trial process- they want as many people as possible to stay in. I’ll ask more questions on Monday - tell me what you want to know and I’ll report back Grin

andadietcoke · 29/01/2021 10:02

That makes more sense than the mass unblinding (as exciting as it seemed)!

A highly effective vaccine to add to the medical countermeasures against COVID-19 trialed in the UK. If it gets MHRA approval this increases our future resilience, including against the B.1.1.7 variant. Many thanks to all trial volunteers and those who conducted the research.

Stopyourhavering64 · 29/01/2021 13:10

As someone on the research side of the vaccine, heartfelt thanks to everyone who volunteered. It really has been amazing news and make my job so worthwhile
One thing this awful pandemic has shown that scientists and research and development departments and regulatory agencies can come together and get trials opened so much quicker which means new treatments are available to more people .....let's hope this has an impact on other such treatment trials especially cancer and rare diseases

Frazzled2207 · 29/01/2021 14:25

@Stopyourhavering64
From our side thanks so much to you too. Must be very satisfying to be involved in something so significant. And in the world of clinical trials there must be many many trials that don’t go anywhere at all.

Does anyone (perhaps @Stopyourhavering64) know when the full results are likely to be published and realistically when the UK supply will be ready?

As far as I'm aware supplies won't be available until later in the spring....not sure when full results available, as I've not been 'at work' today....I'll maybe know more when I log in on Monday but results will need to be peer reviewed ahead of being published ir.novavax.com/news-releases/news-release-details/novavax-covid-19-vaccine-demonstrates-893-efficacy-uk-phase-3 If I hear anything I will update ( when I'm allowed!)

UK supply isn't expected until the summer. I think its still a good few weeks away from publishing results as I was reading today they need a minimum of 100 people in the trial to catch covid19 for the results to then be taken forward for drug approval.

@ramblingsonthego
yes I thought I had read that too and ideally (sort of) you need to be somewhere where there are a lot of cases to get up to that number.

John Wright has tweeted tonight that they will be in touch shortly to tell us which arm we were in - in other words, they’re unblinding.

He’s head of Bradford Institute of Health Research. Professor Saralyan is leading the trial here. John is his boss I think.

Bit late back to this thread, but what marvellous news this is! I’m very happy I volunteered for the trial and so excited to find out if I had vaccine or placebo. What a fantastic effort by everyone involved! Very much looking forward to my Feb appointment (never thought I’d look forward to medical appointments so much).

Whoa! This is big news, thank you. I think I am in the placebo arm - no side effects, not a sausage. Can't wait to find out.

My doctor said the same to me after my 4th appointment a couple of weeks ago, that the results were imminent and we would be unblinded afterwards. I posted on here but many were sceptical whether that would happen. Glad to see it’s being corroborated.
Frazzled2207 · 30/01/2021 12:03

I have my appointment on Friday. We got an update email but it didn’t say anything about being unblinded.
Hopefully I’ll find out the plan when I go along

This is the bit I don’t understand. If the vaccine is approved and goes into production then isn’t the trial over? I asked the nurse who called me yesterday that question and she was emphatic that it isn’t and will continue to the end i.e. the 56 weeks, which would mean that we won’t get the vax until December. But the government is planning to have vaccinated the entire adult population by autumn, which changes the environment for the trial anyway. I’m in group 8 of the priority groups and really want Novavax rather than any of the other vaccines but chances are that if the roll out continues to go to plan, I’ll have my NHS appointment before Easter Hmm.
Daftapath · 30/01/2021 17:12

I wonder whether they will want to keep those who have had the vaccine in the study for as long as possible so they can see how long the vaccine works for?

I haven't heard anything from the study except an email confirming my 4th appointment on 9th.

GreenPlum · 30/01/2021 19:59

There's a lot of conflicting stories flying around now. I'm going in on the 4th so hope to get some clarity.

So far I've heard that in the US and here in Bradford, there's explicit talk of a crossover study where they switch groups and give the vaccine to the placebo arm and vise versa.

I'm just wondering whether this is what they had in mind when they told us that if we had the placebo, we'd get the vaccine.
