Looks like England may be following Scotland. Or parts of England? Or new levels to be announced!? Who knows...

Ah, I see. Yes, the local lockdowns aren't very strict or very locked down - agreed.

I do agree about unis massively increasing the case numbers, but not schools. That is my conclusion from the case numbers in schools, you can draw your own conclusion. I certainly agree about unis. But now they are all locked in their residences infecting each other, poor kids, it seems it is too late to stop that transmission and we can only hope it doesn't spread outside the student communities.

annabel85 · 08/10/2020 08:45

For instance if you spent the day in Manchester and then spent the day in Bristol or London you wouldn't know the difference in terms of what you can and cant do. The only real lockdown city was Leicester a while ago and to a lesser extent Bolton where they at least shut the pubs, but that was about it.

Universities have been a major spreader, which is plain to see by the cities that are worst affected, they've all got big universities and big city centre student populations. I feel sorry for the students, they should never have been crammed into halls this term.

@giggly

Problem of waiting until Monday is Scottish schools have either finished or finish up this Friday. I am booked for 4 nights in Yorkshire so although it’s advised not to make unnecessary travel as a burnt out nurse I was looking forward to my break. So what to do? Travel as planned and then have the possibility of having to return home.Wouldne me in the least bit others if restrictions not pubs and restaurants as got dcwith me.Hmm
Go on break if an announcement is Monday the new restrictions will be days after if previous patterns are followed.
BrieAndChilli · 08/10/2020 08:57

The problem with everyone saying ‘oh a circuit breaker won’t work’ is that people seem to be under the impression that lockdowns are meant to completely stop the virus. They aren’t they are just to slow down transmissions to prevent them getting out of control. People also seem to think that the day a lockdown happens new cases and deaths will immediately drop like a stone! They won’t there is a several week delay between catching covid and death and 1-2 weeks from catching it and actually going for a test and testing positive. So IF we had a 2 week lockdown it would appear during that time that is wasn’t workin as cases would still rise but those cases are the ones that were infected before the lockdown. You would need to wait for several weeks after to see the effect on casss

frozendaisy · 08/10/2020 09:01

Let's see what, if anything happens on Monday.

Think it would be prudent to prepare for tighter restrictions, with basic financial support, over autumn/winter.

PeskyRooks · 08/10/2020 09:16

@YouLikeTheBadOnesToo

Brilliant posts, well said.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 08/10/2020 09:23

Updated bbc article seems to suggest schools open regardless.

I don't like uncertainty when it so directly affects the lives of so many whatever tactic they take.

Peasbewithyou · 08/10/2020 09:31

I wish they would just bloody well get on with it and tell us what’s happening. I know they are “discussing” but it’s the uncertainty that I find difficult.

I totally understand why we need more restrictions and I think it’s probably the right approach (the rule of 6 hasn’t been that useful IMO) but I am a bit gutted about it. It’s DH 40th in a couple of weeks and all original plans have been cancelled so all we have left is a nice meal in a restaurant. Of course there are bigger more important things in this world but it’s still crap. Sad

I also think they need to tell us if we aren’t going to be able to do anything over half term. Lots of people have mini breaks booked that they shifted over from the summer and the hospitality industry needs to know what’s going to happen. Again, I totally understand why they might need to cancel overnight stays away from home / shut restaurants etc etc but it is all very miserable.

A few scientists on R4 have talked about whether two weeks is effective. Restrictions take a long time to have impact. Any 3 to 4 day doubling takes 3 to 4 weeks down the other side. Fast up, slow down.

I don’t think anyone expects cases to drop immediately, of course not, but given the massive economic disruption it has to deliver the bang in terms of numbers.

MarshaBradyo · 08/10/2020 09:36

Bang ie buck for bang phrase not literal

Topseyt · 08/10/2020 09:46

@Strawberrypancakes

I absolutely don’t give a shit about any new rules... does no one else feel this way? I’m over it.

Economy, cancer, mental health, every other illness!... ffs everyone needs to get over this.

Totally agree. I'm done with dancing stupidly around this thing using arbitrary rules that just don't work.

I am not a big socialiser. I tend to keep myself to myself so I like a fair bit of distance around me anyway. I wear my mask where needed although I don't like it. That is really as far as I wish to go anymore.

I don't think we can really control this thing, and we certainly can't eliminate it as some people seem to think.

I will no longer be told that I can no longer visit my elderly parents whenever they have a health crisis. They are not in a care home thankfully, but do need care in their own home.

Racoonworld · 08/10/2020 09:52

Yes over it now. I will stick to the main things of small groups, masks in public etc. but I will continue to see parents and close friends. I’m not giving up my entire social life this time.

SoloMummy · 08/10/2020 09:59

@Whirlwind14

Do we know if this is England wide or just in areas with >100 per 100 k?
It will be England. I would hope that similarly to the lockdown that the rate will refer to each district/Council as per electoral area. Selfishly, we sit between 3 and 1 has had horrific levels the other 2 not. So it would seem unfair for the entire cou ty being locked down if only one Borough with he raised levels. However, it makes things very wishy washy as people obviously move between areas for work etc and many of the teschers in our schools come from the Borough with higher rates! I really cannot see how these measures will reduce or flatten the rates tbh.
BeNiceLikeIRL · 08/10/2020 10:10

LBC news is saying it will be localised. I think that new areas will be added as and when the rates reach certain levels.

Oaktree55 · 08/10/2020 10:23

I’m not convinced it will work shutting hospitality but it’s interesting it’s starting to happen across Europe. Brussels has shut hospitality for a month today.

Gingerninja4 · 08/10/2020 10:34

We are below 100 case per 100,000 but last few weeks we gone from 10 per 100,00 to 75 per 100,000 and above the national average of 52 /100,000

So we be tier 1 still but, pretty obvious something going wrong in our area way cases are rising locally .

Maybe rather than going just on numbers they need to look at how quick cases are rising

Ironic if we been in the North of country we been into restrictions quicker

BeNiceLikeIRL · 08/10/2020 10:42

@Oaktree55

And Paris shutting any pub/bar etc that doesn't have a kitchen also
BeNiceLikeIRL · 08/10/2020 10:43

And Marseilles already closed them too

daytripper28 · 08/10/2020 10:48

OMG

They are so f*** useless it beggars belief.

Either crack on with whatever or shut the fuck up. Nooooo - they are waiting til Monday till making the 'announcement'

Numbers yesterday 14,000 plus. Idiots. What will it be by Monday??

The reason local lockdowns are working is because the test track and trace is an absolute shite show, with over 16,000 positive cases going around infecting others, as they didn't even know!!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 08/10/2020 10:49

@Worriedmum999

No restrictions they put in place will work while it’s running rampant through schools. We will be destroying the economy again when only 3% of transmission happened in restaurants. 44% is happening in schools! But now Boris has said he won’t close schools he can’t, even though it would be the quickest way to get numbers down again.
I agree, from graphs I’ve seen it’s not hospitality that is spreading it but cases in schools, care homes and some workplaces. Surely you start with the area with most cases as it will have the most impact. Remote schooling or part time rota to reduce numbers would be far better than closing down places that generate tax as we need the economy more than physical places in schools.
daytripper28 · 08/10/2020 10:50

*aren't working

whoops - they are NOT working

MarshaBradyo · 08/10/2020 10:51

Primary age schools are not amplifying cases.

No point in making part time or closing it won’t help other sectors.

ThankyouPeter · 08/10/2020 10:59

The news and articles are saying that schools will stay open but the guidance issued to them definitely says they should move to blended learning and have students in no a rotational basis depending on the local tiers.

Oaktree55 · 08/10/2020 11:40

Italy (who quite frankly are at least attempting to have a competent response) are setting up a surveillance to test all schoolchildren. So our incompetent Gov may not want to actually put surveillance in place for schools but at least the Italians will get us the data 🥳

Splodgetastic · 08/10/2020 11:43

The problem isn't the rules not being strict enough but lack of enforcement. DF is in local lockdown and told me he saw one neighbour have three visitors over one day.
