Looks like England may be following Scotland. Or parts of England? Or new levels to be announced!? Who knows...

Confirmed: restaurants and pubs to close in the north from Monday.

Oaktree55 · 07/10/2020 23:38

@kantswife that’s interesting you say you’ve had it twice. Have an extended family member 18 had it twice in all likelihood (positive lab antibody) then positive pcr 5 months later. V mild symptoms each time as young but shows there’s probably loads of reinfections going undetected and blows herd immunity argument out the water.

I think the extent of reinfection will be verified over next few months scientifically then there’ll be a totally different approach as the implications are huge.

Sobeyondthehills · 07/10/2020 23:40

@cheninblanc

Why do they leak little bits then leave us guessing. I'm in the south east will this affect us won't it.... gets my anxiety everytime
I caught a bit of PM question time today and the point was made that in Johnson's constituency, the rate of infection was higher than in places in the North (didn't catch where he said) that have been locked down for weeks.
youngestisapsycho · 07/10/2020 23:40

I heard form someone in the know that from Mon 19th, it will be 2 week half term and a full lockdown.... only Supermarkets/food shops can open.

Who? Boris?
PhoebeSnow · 07/10/2020 23:44

Where I live we had one of the hardest lockdowns in the world.
We couldn’t go out at all except to buy food , couldn’t even walk our dogs, ( we broke the curfew to walk our dogs at 11pm as it was ridiculous and cruel and we never saw another soul) a curfew of 6 pm except for key workers like my dh, no alcohol, no cigarettes, everything closed except chemists and food shops. We have slowly come out the other side here, but now there are an estimated 1 MILLION MORE unemployed people here.

The government here had huge criticism, however the death rate has been much, much lower than expected, possibly due to the very hard lockdown , the young population and other factors.

QueenOllie · 07/10/2020 23:44

I think they have to close some stuff to keep schools open. I mean nobody wins in any scenario, it's what is the priority?
I do feel they should be a bit firmer on the WFH, he did say if you are able to people should be WFH but a lot of companies want staff in because they either don't trust them or they just want bums on seats. If transmission is cut in social settings and workplaces then schools might be ok?
It's never going to please everyone because everyone has different circumstances. Rock and hard place. But people not following restrictions and not self isolating (80% don't I think I read) really isn't helping
I get there are exemptions for masks but when you go to a shop and nobody is wearing them except staff and that's pretty consistent every time you go in... people just don't wear them in the area I'm in and make it harder for the people with exemptions

Sobeyondthehills · 07/10/2020 23:45

and, to everyone moaning about how we can't cope with any new restrictions, you all must be in a very privileged position that you and your whole family is basically Safe and won't ever feel the effects of a virus that has killed and will continue to kill.

Its not selfish to be panicking about how people are going to pay their rent or mortgage, food, gas, electric

Maybe you are in the very privileged position not to have to worry about the fact that two weeks off work is not going to affect you. You might be in the privileged position to have been supported during the lockdown, when millions of people were "left behind" despite promises from the Government that no one would be. So they got fuck all.

Its wrong to call people selfish, when alot of people (that I know) are struggling to feed their families due to the lack of support they have received and watching their industry dying.

StatisticalSense · 07/10/2020 23:45

@Oaktree55
The main implication of finding out that it is mutating at a rate that will make herd immunity impossible is that finding a useful vaccine will take many years longer than was first thought which makes any option other than allowing nature to take it's course impossible for multiple reasons.

Oaktree55 · 07/10/2020 23:50

@StatisticalSense I didn’t think it was mutating fast and I do think hopefully vaccines are promising. Not my area but from what I’ve read it’s more that the mildly affected don’t zero convert or not to a degree to prevent reinfection.

Definitely not my area of expertise but the thought seems to be vaccination should offer greater protection than natural infection.

Oaktree55 · 07/10/2020 23:51

Sero not zero 🤣

123rd · 07/10/2020 23:52

Ha-Boris??? He won't have a sodding clue

PhoebeSnow · 07/10/2020 23:56

Oh and we have to wear masks all the time when outside our homes, except when eating, hand sanitizers at the doors of each and every shop, and throughout the stores, no mask; no entry to anywhere without exception, every ATM has wipes beside them, every shop has covers over the pin card machine and the assistants clean after every use, just as they like they clean every surface before we put our stuff down. It all takes longer but we feel safer.

StillMedusa · 07/10/2020 23:57

So over it.
DD2 getting married this month. In Scotland (where fiance 's family are) Wedding gone from 80 to 11, brother can't attend because he is stuck in Australia.
In the last 3 weeks we have gone from getting married in fiance's families garden (huge small holding type place) to..nope can't do that because it's a private place.. however we could have 6 in a registry office (safer than outside HOW?) or in a public space...
Ok we move it 5 mins up the road to by a river.. marriage registrar agrees,
Tonight..email from registrar to say private field is now okay again so have to alter the licence again.
Obviously we won't be breaking the rules and having two families together for a nice meal in the house afterwards.... oh yeah actually we will... fine us if you can fucking well find us!

Meanwhile it's fine for me to be in school every day with a ton of kids and other staff....every sodding member of my family is either in education or nursing, worked through all the lockdowns, taken every precaution we can, not seen Mum for months...

Personally I think it's time to get on with life.. masks on, hands washed but get on with it.It's not going to go away.

Oaktree55 · 08/10/2020 00:01

Something drastic will need to change over next 6 weeks. I think the hospitality clamp down is clutching at straws personally. I think we’re decimating our economy as our Government is panicked and desperately reactive. The truth is the fundamentals aren’t in place. Testing is a shambles, those that are positive 80% don’t isolate.

It’s going to break unfortunately and we’ll lose whole industries because they can cope and plan for restrictions but not uncertainty.

It’s shambolic and there will be some v tough weeks ahead as a result.

ozymandiusking · 08/10/2020 00:01

I am going to join in the thread. As a 70 year old ( which these days isn't considered old) We are fairly careful, my husband is 80. He does most of the shopping, but other than that we are careful. At the week end we went out for a meal, mask sanitiser etc.All ok.
But, I do think enough is enough, and we need to learn to live with covid. The elderly die every year of flue.
I think all schools, colleges universities should be back in full time time education. f one child is ill send tem home , but not the whole class. ( Their parents have to work for heavens sake.)
All pubs restaurants, pubs, gyms, swimming pools horse riding, any thing, night school. (I could go on and on) you get my drift, should be open as normal, no booking just as it used to be, ie The old normal!!
No qeueuing at shops spacing etc.
Most of the people who contract covid usualy survive whithout too much problem.
As for those who die, or survive with long covid..... so be it.
People will eventually develop immunity. When a vaccine is developed.
good that will be even better. But we have to do something about the economy, keep people in work, the country is dying on its feet.
If people want to go into work let them, if they are worried, stay at home. We have to find a way to make the OLD NORMAL work.
Appolgies if I have gone on a bit.
Thank you for reading.
I'm always open to comments and Ideas, but, never so open minded that my brains fall out!

Everybody trollied over the weekend, copious use of the word " revelers" in the Fail

justasking111 · 08/10/2020 00:13

As grandparents we are over it. Will continue to look after the little ones, our children hanging on by a thread, both families work in hospitality so are in a bad way. We are in a lockdown county in North Wales, so no visitors allowed now. positives 10 in 100,000 today. It is nuts.

gallbladderpain · 08/10/2020 00:15

@MissPoldark

*I absolutely don’t give a shit about any new rules... does no one else feel this way? I’m over it.

Economy, cancer, mental health, every other illness!... ffs everyone needs to get over this.*

Have you actually thought about what would happen with no measures to try and control the spread of the virus?
Do you think that hospitals being overwhelmed and nurses being burnt out is going to be any good for the economy, cancer or mental health?
We don’t have the luxury of not giving a shit.

This ! Why do people think their own health mental physical or otherwise trump's that of everyone else ! So they are worried about every other illness wanting to protect people from every other illness but fuck the people who are highly vunerable to covid and will die from it if it gets out of control. Equally on the mental health....'my mental health can't cope with another lockdown' ....well some nurses mental health can't cope with having to watch many more people die of covid and be run ragged when the health service is under pressure....so why does your mental health take precedence over hers ? Everyone has to make sacrifices...every single person !!
Oaktree55 · 08/10/2020 00:17

@ozymandiusking unfortunately that’s not how it works. Our Government is not putting restrictions in place out of a concern even for people dying. The only reason it’s doing so is because this causes healthcare to become overwhelmed if allowed to run free. That’s the only reason. Look at countries like Brazil to see what happens without measures. Bodies in street territory.

It’s just not possible. It also would mean no healthcare for car crashes, heart attacks etc etc

Trust me our Government don’t want to do any of this it’s a necessity. If they were competent they’d handle more like Germany have with less disruption, although Germany were better set up to handle this from Day 1.

jessstan1 · 08/10/2020 00:17

@Shangrilaa

I just want to know if we can go for a self catering break over half term! How inconsiderate of Boris to leave me wondering Wink
Ask yourself, "What would Boris do?", and you'll have your answer.

You must be in a very privileged position if you family is safe from losing their jobs, houses, businesses etc. due to what the govt are doing to the economy.

MiddlesexGirl · 08/10/2020 00:24

Then restrictions are eased again; infections increase, deaths increase and back to total lockdown again. What’s the point???

Achieves herd immunity slowly thus not overwhelming the NHS

randomer · 08/10/2020 00:25

She is pulling a few strings for sure.
