This is what I heard when I turned on the news just a minute ago...by demonstrators in London today...I'm actually really shocked. Do people really think this?? There were A LOT of people at the demonstration...

Oh, yes, there is no better way to show your care and consideration for the elderly than to go out en masse without masks and shout, expelling aerosols that may or may not contain coronavirus... There is also no better way to prove you are not a sheep, than to gather in a large flock because some other disgruntled sheep are gathering...

If the China border was closed back in December (earlier?) So no one was allowed in or out till it was eradicated there would any of us be having any discussion on each countries handling of the virus?

ChasingRainbows19 · 27/09/2020 06:28

I work in a hospital. We never stopped treating non covid. In fact there was a campaign to bring people back to hospitals as they weren’t coming to a&e for serious conditions. Wards were open absolutely for other things. In my trust we utitilised private hospitals and community settings to see urgent patients like cancer... these seems like a lottery in all trusts though.

Contrary to public opinion we are open and have been functioning as per NHS England guidelines. Some hospitals have managed to get many more services running than others. That’s down to their individual management.

Please note it’s not as simple as restarting. You have to ensure areas are covid safe for the patients coming in. It’s not a normal way of working and as normal takes an age to sort.

The staff want services up and running so blame the powers that be that have prevented that and now the rising cases again. Also I’m in the north. Covid is very real and positive patients are coming back very sick again.

@eaglejulesk

New Zealand had completely shut its borders, hardly freedom! (not sure if they can travel now or not).

Most people here are comfortable with that - and we are certainly free from all the covid restrictions commented about on MN!

Also NZ-ers can travel if they quarantine I thought?

Obviously that's not cheap or straightforward, but neither is it imprisonment

The thing they are mostly free from is worry. I find that more trapping than all the practical restrictions. The worry of how big will the winter wave be?

I'm pretty sure there have been confirmation of corona virus in some European countries before that (from testing water samples I think?)

Nellodee · 27/09/2020 07:19

In prepared to bet that the vast majority of the people at that rally have social media as their main news source. Social media’s news feeds, following alternative facts with alternative facts, so that users receive an entirely fabricated view of the world, is the real problem here.

Nellodee · 27/09/2020 07:21

It’s algorithms see that you have watched one conspiracy video, so then start giving you videos like that one, and before you know it, you are bombarded with these vids, creating a skewed world view, and wondering why all those other idiots and sheeple can’t see the truths you do.

BlueCookieMonster · 27/09/2020 07:29

I agree with a previous poster that the restrictions are going to cost more in economic and mental well-being, than they ever would otherwise.

BlueCookieMonster · 27/09/2020 07:31

Don’t get me wrong, I do my part and happily wear a mask etc etc. However, I am concerned about the long term impact of all this.

Dongdingdong · 27/09/2020 07:45

Idiots who should have been banned from assembling and arrested when they did.

Why don’t you go and live in a dictatorship @Rosehip10? Because it sounds like it would suit you down to the ground Hmm

CrunchyCarrot · 27/09/2020 08:08

@Sarahpaula

You need to understand that greed, corruption, hunger for power - those are human failings, and we are all prone to those, not just people in the govt (I've seen plenty of those things just on game sites!). It's not 'us' and 'them'. It's all of us. It would truly be wonderful to have a world where there's no suffering, everyone has enough, but we will never have it as long as human nature is what it is.

As far as I'm concerned you can reset this world as much as you like (and there are valid reasons for doing so), but in the long run it won't change anythin because human nature remains the same. So, we keep going along, fighting, blaming etc in a continuous cycle. We will carry on with greed, controlling behaviour (not just in the government - check out abusive relationships!), etc. Just throwing out the current world order will not be enough, because in time we will find the same problems developing again, because humanity is what it is.

Yes that sounds bleak, but don't forget amidst all that there is great good in people as well, and we do have periods of peace, prosperity and progress. I believe one day we will have this again but not until the world's been through a major upheaval. We have to hang on to the good in people, it's too easy to despair and lose all hope, but I will never place my trust in people like David Icke or Piers Corbyn. At the moment I am far, far more worried by what I see in people and their mad conspiracy theories than I am about Covid itself.

jasjas1973 · 27/09/2020 08:09

These thick people were gathered all together in a close space, no distancing, no masks

Do you mean the millions who packed into Cornwall this summer or again the millions who filled pubs and restaurants to do Eat out to help out?
Or the few 1000 who took part in a protest in London?

Meanwhile, the govt gets a free pass on track and test, the 30k care home deaths and its handling of CV over summer which has now led to the 2nd wave we face, the complete lack of flu vaccines and turn a blind eye to locking up students just days after encouraging them to travel to their Uni's...........

DreamingofGinoclock · 27/09/2020 08:25

I'm less surprised at things like this after watching the social dilema the other day on netflix ... it demonstrates how algorithms for search engines and social media etc don't know truth from fact and conspirisy theories are more likely to come up on news feeds of those who can be persuaded...eventually all they are seeing are the conspiracy theories and no other opposing views

candourclegane · 27/09/2020 08:28

To all the posters saying they are GPs, know doctors etc. etc. and that covid is falsely being put on death certificates to bump up the numbers, I have a question.

If this is all true and the numbers are falsely high, does that mean ButSweden (which has a death rate that is lower, but quite close to the UK's) has actually done worse than the UK in handling the pandemic?

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 27/09/2020 08:35

Half of people have an IQ of 100 or under.

Well, I may well be one of them. Does that mean I'm not significant enough to have a voice? Sad

DreamingofGinoclock · 27/09/2020 08:35

Cross Post , Nellodee explains what I was trying to say a lot better
candourclegane · 27/09/2020 08:41

@Mintychoc1 I hope you have reported the coroner(s) that asked you to do that?

itsgettingweird · 27/09/2020 08:42

@Hmmph

I think a global pandemic with nearly a million dead officially and cases increasing daily is so mind blowingly terrifying people just cannot cope with it.

A conspiracy is easier to deal with.

That's a interesting perspective.

Conspiracy theories usually come after events where we don't have the full facts and it's not straightforward to explain.

So it makes sense it's filling in the gaps themselves and maybe it's drawn from fear.

Derbygerbil · 27/09/2020 08:45

@Sarahpaula

There is no need to have governments at all. They are what has created this world - that has made so many people suffer, and starve to death. Because a bunch of people (governments and banking institutions) - want power, and to be rich.

Surely that bunch of people will still want power and money if Governments didn’t exist.... All we’d be doing is creating anarchy that the most ruthless and determined would exploit to obtain despotic power...

The examples of countries where Government has dissolved don’t give grounds for any optimism - on the contrary. By your analysis, Somalia should be the beacon of post-Governmental harmony and justice given its lack of functioning Government since the early 1990s, when in actual fact it’s a hellhole of competing militias.

In terms of suffering, yes, there is massive suffering in the world, but - pre-pandemic at least - the world population’s health and prosperity has, on average, been steadily increasing over past decades.

Derbygerbil · 27/09/2020 08:53

@DrizzleandDamp

It’s perfectly possible to believe restrictions should be in places to help prevent a worsening situation in care homes AND believe that the Government made serious mistakes in the handling of the crisis with regard to care homes back in March.

Indeed, from my reading, most people who are broadly supportive of restrictions are simultaneously pretty critical of the Government.

I can’t see how going on a non-socially distanced demonstration to protest restrictions because you want to protect care homes makes any sense at all. It makes as much sense as smoking a cigarette because you don’t want to die of cancer.

yawnsvillex · 27/09/2020 08:53

Well I have proof that my cousin died in early April, TWO negative Covid tests and doctor signed death certificate as Covid.

We are taking legal advise.

LocalLockdowner · 27/09/2020 08:58

So these people that believe Drs are being paid to say Covid is amongst us, what is the end game? Why do they think this is the case? Who started it? Why? Who benefits in the end?

Orange89 · 27/09/2020 09:01

Can someone just explain to me why we're doing all this for a virus that has killed less people than heart disease / cancers etc. The government don't seem to go to these lengths to save the people who would be dying on a usual year 🤷‍♀️

Orange89 · 27/09/2020 09:07

The end game..

Cashless society so more control over our money.
Privatisation of the NHS.
More control over us in general.

The government gain but I think they could just be the pupets in all this.

Orange89 · 27/09/2020 09:10

@yawnsvillex

Sorry for your loss!

Exactly, things just don't add up! People are saying where's your proof doctors are doing this. Well you have it! And where's the proof they ARE dying Of covid
