Joining in from South Tyneside, I've worked right through as part of a 24/365 service. A colleague told me last night his wife called at a supermarket near them (possibly near Stanley?) To buy ingredients to make DD birthday cake and was told she was 'stock piling' and was turned away! She had 1 bag flour, eggs, candles. Their DS even said to the assistant that it was his big sister's birthday but they refused to serve them Confused went to Morrison's and bought all without any issue!

IggyAce · 26/09/2020 13:21

@runningtogetskinny that’s shocking 1 bag of flour and eggs is hardly stock piling quantities. Wouldn’t bother visiting there again.
Happy to report DS & I got out for a walk, collected some conkers, the high wind helped bring a few down. We got our shopping and made it home before the rain arrived. Afternoon of not doing a lot is planned.

PickAChew · 26/09/2020 13:31

@Someaddedsugar

Is it student arrival weekend in Durham? Spotted to signs on the way to DS' nursery but there weren't any dates etc.

Also - North Road looks to be closed at Durham bus station for a few weeks from 5 October. I know it's limited access by car but might have an impact on anyone who gets the bus. Not sure where the diversion will go as I've looked on DCC website but no reference to it yet.

Yep. Freshers weekend. DS1 has had toast for lunch because I've refused to go anywhere near the tesco for his one sandwich that he'll eat.

I think they're starting to demolish the old bus station, next month. Surprised it hasn't already collapsed in a heap of rust. I think buses will be using Sutton Street, North Road outside Wharton Park and leazes Road, while all that is going on then back to using Millburngate, like last month, when they can get through again, as well as the new temporary stops on North Road.

This is one of the few things that's probably benefitted from the pandemic with not having 40-50 people all waiting for each bus, of an afternoon.

PickAChew · 26/09/2020 13:36

The roads were strange at the start of lockdown. Crossing the main road near our house is usually like a game of frogger but you could safely walk along it in April.

PennyDreadfuI · 26/09/2020 14:00

@PickAChew me and DH had a wander as far as Haymarket about 4 weeks into lockdown on a Saturday afternoon and this is how it looked. Bananas!

Wow! That road is normally gridlocked on a Saturday afternoon!

LittleRa · 26/09/2020 14:44

Horrific news story from Gosforth Park First School, if anyone is in the area or knows the school

PennyDreadfuI · 26/09/2020 14:58

@PickAChew I know, bonkers. Was about 3pm. We passed about three people and were able to walk down the middle of the road, not one bit of traffic passed us.

@LittleRa absolutely awful news. The school isn't far from me and is on the same campus as DH's old school. Just terrible.

Such sad news about that little girl 😢

I've been to Sainsbury in Benton today to pick up an Argos online order and had to queue to get in the store.

Then I went to Asda for my food shop and there were very few toilet rolls left on the shelf. Luckily I wanted kitchen roll.

My heating is on, and I think it might be time to put the Winter duvet on the bed 🥶

Quiero · 26/09/2020 16:13

DD wanted to spend her money from the tooth fairy so we went to Smyths in Wallsend. Massive queue round the carpark. Silverlink was absolute chaos and even that little retail park next to Tesco on Norham Road was absolutely rammed. People are going absolutely nuts.

Someaddedsugar · 26/09/2020 16:41

Awful news about the little girl. Such a tragic incident.

@PickAChew thanks re the bus station/North Road roadworks! Our nursery is just off north road so hoping we'll be able to park either near the train station and walk the rest of the way. The artist impressions of the new bus station are quite impressive. And as you say the pandemic has probably lessened the disruption which must be a first!

NeurotrashWarrior · 26/09/2020 16:41

Oh my gosh that little girl! I know children who go to the school Sad

NeurotrashWarrior · 26/09/2020 16:42

@Snoringferret

Jesmond is rammed with students.

The queue for Starbucks is a sight to behold.

Jesmond will go dark blue v soon I reckon.

NeurotrashWarrior · 26/09/2020 16:44

Tentatively tried a swim lesson at gosforth pool today with DS.

Worryingly I didn't see anyone we knew which makes me think they all think it's unsafe!

It was extremely well done. I felt safer than at school, certainly.

Rosehip10 · 26/09/2020 16:44

Can anyone recommend a place that does a brilliant cooked breakfast in Newcastle/Northumberland?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/09/2020 16:45

Ernest

NeurotrashWarrior · 26/09/2020 16:46

Pickachew, brilliant website thank you! Perfect for a few at work.

PickAChew · 26/09/2020 16:48

You were saying? There were about 60 students tested positive, the other day. No doubt more since

NeurotrashWarrior · 26/09/2020 16:48

Yes Ernest and I liked the breakfast they do at that pottery place in the ouseburn too.

It's been so long I went anywhere for a cooked breakfast I can't think though!

LittleRa · 26/09/2020 16:49

@Rosehip10 @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz I was going to say Ernest (Ouseburn) too! I’m a veggie but my DP loves their breakfast. Others- Arlo in Jesmond. Allards in Tynemouth. Crab and Waltzer Whitley Bay. Boatyard Cullercoats. The View Tynemouth.

NeurotrashWarrior · 26/09/2020 16:50
Shock

Jeeeze!

I knew students wouldn't help.

NeurotrashWarrior · 26/09/2020 16:50

Allards! Oooh yes all good suggestions!

FrolickingLemon · 26/09/2020 17:13

Horrendous news about the little girl from Gosforth Park.

All round, it is definitely starting to feel like early March did. Sad

gingeristhenewblack43 · 26/09/2020 17:48

@Quiero that is madness! I live a few mins drive from Smyths. I think people are panicking about Christmas and being able to get their kids the toys they want.

I made a start this week but only because Argos had 1/3 off some of their lego sets.

My ExDH said he took DD to 2 McDonald's today for lunch but the queues for the drive thru were crazy, so they went back to his. People are obviously worrying that we're going to end up in full lockdown again and keen to get a last Maccys in.

LatteLover12 · 26/09/2020 18:12

How did I not know that website existed @PennyDreadfuI ?! Thanks for that 😁

Devastating news about the girl in Gosforth 😔
