Yay.

Second wave coming
OP posts:
FelicisNox · 19/09/2020 17:34

I was hoping it wouldn't hit until November.

Big thanks to all the non mask wearing douches who brought it forward. Not.

HeIenaDove · 19/09/2020 17:42

Yeah absolutely nothing to do with them having SEVEN MONTHS to get test and trace working properly yet STILL being unable to do it

And giving contracts to their mates rather than the people who could achieve this.

HeIenaDove · 19/09/2020 17:44

Big thanks to all the douches who kept going on ski trips and cruises after the fact which brought more cases of it into the country. Still want to play the blame game?

Pliudev · 19/09/2020 17:48

I met a woman today, late 60s, who said it was disgusting that the arts were being destroyed, that you had to make an appointment to visit a gallery. She also said the figures in our area were low so there was no need for all these precautions. I don't know where she got her information from but we have been inundated with tourists and the results of that aren't known yet. I told her what I thought and she decided to ignore me. With people that stupid around I dread the next few months. I know that if I had school age kids I'd do everything I could to keep them home. It's been known for 6 months that this was coming and the government have failed completely to plan for it.

TheSeedsOfADream · 19/09/2020 17:52

Is her age relevant?

Dominicgoings · 19/09/2020 17:54
@KitKatastrophe His obvious relief when we were so cheerful about having 9 substitutions made me I wonder if other people get annoyed.
My nephew works as a supermarket delivery driver. A big strong but sensitive, lovely lad who was subjected to relentless abuse when he had to tell people they had substitutions.

earnshaw47 · 19/09/2020 18:04

i am slightly confused, we are due to start lockdown on tuesday but what does that mean for the shielding group ? are we back to isolating, not going out at all or carry on as we have been doing the last few weeks

OverTheRainbow88 · 19/09/2020 18:07

That’s terrible.
My mum was shielding and was so grateful for delivery so tipped the driver £20 a go!

@Stinkyguineapig
"My BIL works at a power station, he can't wfh, he was working 60 hour weeks over lockdown. There must be so many industries that literally keep the cogs turning to enable the fortunate ones who can WFH to do so and feel superior about it"

Your BIL is doing a brilliant job, like so many people in front-line positions who keep the economy running. I hope they can get properly compensated for all they do.

But it's sad that you're getting so cross with those who are preparing to work from home and hunker down for the winter. I am one of them, I haven't always been, and I'm very grateful that these days I'm in an industry where I can both work from home and also do a bit of home educating too because it's that flexible. Lots of colleagues and friends are also aware that we are priviliged.

But us not going around shops, going to the pub and travelling to work does mean that it keeps everything safer for those who have no choice. So rather than let an incompetent government encourage us to blame things on each other, let's keep the blame where it firmly belongs - on the people elected and paid to keep us all safe by implementing policies that do that.

ChavvySexPond · 19/09/2020 18:42

@Dominicgoings
That's rotten isn't it? And it doesn't help a jot. Poor lad. There's just no need.

ChavvySexPond · 19/09/2020 18:46

@Stinkyguineapig

I was unaware too Weedsnseeds 1 about the food industry. There are a large contingent of teachers on MN, it seems and another large contingent of people who have the luxury of "bunking down for the winter" for the sake of saving everyone from covid ....forgetting they will need the food industry, warehouse workers, supermarket staff, amazon delivery drivers, utilities workers, broadband and IT specialists (and probably many others I havent thought of) to enable that privilege. My BIL works at a power station, he can't wfh, he was working 60 hour weeks over lockdown. There must be so many industries that literally keep the cogs turning to enable the fortunate ones who can WFH to do so and feel superior about it
I don't feel superior about WFH. But me working from home does help reduce other people's overall contacts.

There's not much I can do to help in the time of Covid. But I can do that. So I do it. And I try to do it cheerfully.

Stinkyguineapig · 19/09/2020 18:57

I think it's good if people can wfh (and have suitable set up to do so) that they do, but in the beginning there was lots of shouty STAY AT HOME messages, ignoring that not all jobs can be done from home, and thus is not a choice afforded to everyone, and the people (IME) saying it were those that had least to lose by staying at home.

There was a picture of a packed tube in morning rush hour (prob about 7.30am) just after lockdown started. Lots of comments about these "selfish" people who, in reality were likely just going to work which they couldnt do from home. If they didnt turn up they would probably not get paid. Not many people would squeeze on to a train at rush hour for fun.

HeyBlaby · 19/09/2020 19:09

'At least Medical staff are all geared up to deal with patients'

The cheap ear loop surgical masks are doing next to FA to protect health care staff from Covid +ve patients.

Maddy32 · 19/09/2020 19:41

There is no second wave - Take a look at this.

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 19:41

I quite like substitutions. It's how I get to try new things. The only time I say no is when they've sent non-veggie sweets or something we don't like at all. The delivery drivers are fab here. Really friendly, helpful and cheerful and we all look forward to our weekly delivery seeing as we don't get out much Grin it's usually the same drivers too so that's nice as they know us and we know them.

nuitdesetoiles · 19/09/2020 20:18

Some posts on here are making me really angry. Glibly talking about "getting extra in" . Any reference to this anywhere will just trigger idiots panic buying again... And yes if you do that you are an idiot. And selfish.

The inference that those of us who do want to keep our jobs, livelihoods and reasonable standard of living are somehow selfish. I'm terrified, as I have been all my life of poverty and not having enough cash for the essentials. Which is why since the age of 14 I've worked, sometimes several jobs at once. It's clear that some posters have never felt the relentless, bleak grind of poverty. Poverty has and will kill more people than Corona ever will.

And teachers, yes it's shit but unless you're vulnerable/going home to a vulnerable household member you don't need to be "Terrified". Why does every thread about covid always revert to being all about the teachers?

Shell4429 · 19/09/2020 20:54

I knew this would happen when the government insisted kids went back to school. It’s where all the viruses are spread. They might not be ill themselves but they are passing it on to everyone in the family! It was insane to send them back as if everything was normal.

Gabbianni · 19/09/2020 20:57

This whole testing thing has been a fiasco - I know we're dealing with ever-changing goalposts here, but there really appears to be a disconnect between how the government thinks families can handle the changing lockdown rules and the actuality of the situation - the vast majority of people not being able to afford to take more time off work or have jobs that easily translate to working at home - I am not in this situation - I live alone, and my job partially translates well to home working. This might not sit well with many in my situation but I really think there needs to be more testing - and perhaps some form of small emergency tax for those who can continue to work from home to help those whose circumstances are different - it doesn't have to be much but everything would help - I'd sign up for it - I feel for people who are having to spin all of these plates.

Margerine78 · 19/09/2020 21:30

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane

Oh finally! We've been waiting ages for Season 2. People kept promising it'd be released after Bournemouth, BLM, Easter etc.
Ha ha ha...let's hope we indulge in season 2 AND pasta this time.

I know. Given the rule of six excludes children as they can spread the virus just like adults quite why we are still having schools fully open to all like before is beyond me.
Weedsnseeds1 · 19/09/2020 21:49

Staffy1 yes, they have PPE to a certain extent, but there is often a trade off between traditional health and safety and COVID-19 safety.
If you are, for example, operating a brisket saw, you need eye protection, but add a mask and visor in a chilled environment, you steam up and are waving around what is basically an electric chain saw, while effectively blind fold.
You are working 12 hour shifts, often using blades, machines, driving a forklift, climbing up and down ladders and walkways with no periferal vision or forward vision.

Weedsnseeds1 · 19/09/2020 21:53

I'm sure there are similar industries that I am not personally familiar with that have the same problems. Lights don't switch on by themselves, water doesn't just find it own way to the tip, while helpfully filtering and chlorinating itself, sewage, deliveries, public transport, retail...
All sorts of humble jobs that are essential.

glitterwobbles · 19/09/2020 21:56

It saddens me that some people think that it's all the governments fault. We all can take some responsibility. If everyone made a small effort to think of the consequences of their actions on others not their own self entitlements we may be in a better place.
We must absolutely keep schools open if we can. Surely our children are more important than keeping pubs open. We must protect our teachers by keeping our children's exposure outside of school to a minimum. Who needs to have house parties ?

angeltop · 19/09/2020 22:03

And still more people die from flu with a vaccine than Covid (19) without.

sogi · 19/09/2020 22:25

@Echobelly

My prediction - it'll peak some time next month, they'll get it relatively under control by start of December, then cue mawkish headlines from Sun, Mail etc saying 'Please give us back our Christmas Boris!' and they'll drop loads of restrictions for Xmas, then wave 3 in February.
Seconded
