Another National Lockdown

What are the chances ? Sky News are reporting the possibility and a second lockdown has become a reality in Israel.

How likely do you think it is ?

..or only a minority that has to shield

TempsPerdu · 13/09/2020 22:14

I suspect a full national lockdown is unlikely - the national mood is very different from what it was in March, with much less goodwill towards the government and sense of national solidarity. It will be a worst case scenario and if it does happen the economy and young people’s futures will be well and truly ruined, and sadly many people’s mental health won’t hold out.

In the event of it happening, I won’t be complying this time. Obviously things being closed I can’t do much about, but there’s no way I’m depriving DD of contact with her peers again, and all my friends with young children (and teens, for that matter) feel the same. We’ll be organising ad hoc play dates and childcare if the worst comes to the worst. And my elderly parents, who are among those are are supposedly being ‘protected’ by these measures, won’t accept not seeing their grandchild for months on end again either.

ssd · 13/09/2020 22:14

A second lock down won't work.
We'll all just go visiting relatives and say we're getting our eyes tested when questioned.

wheresmymojo · 13/09/2020 22:14

I don't think it will happen. They're using it as a threat.

They may close pub and restaurants again or roll back other things but we simply can't afford another full National lockdown.

MarshaBradyo · 13/09/2020 22:16

If people won’t comply with socialisation restrictions in a lockdown, and I doubt they will, then you get worse case scenario. No education, no businesses but everyone meeting privately. I cannot imagine how shite that would be for the country.

Malachite234 · 13/09/2020 22:16

@Justaboy

Well if people could keep a distanne apart, wear a mask whilst out the presence of others in shops and the like, confined spaces worse excess lockdown may be avoided.

BUT its not going the stop or go away till an effective Vaccine is devloped, so we'll just have to managed it that bit better!

www.cdc.gov/flu/symptoms/flu-vs-covid19.htm

Influenza (Flu) and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. COVID-19 is caused by infection with a new coronavirus (called SARS-CoV-2) and flu is caused by infection with influenza viruses. Because some of the symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are similar, it may be hard to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone, and testing may be needed to help confirm a diagnosis. Flu and COVID-19 share many characteristics, but there are some key differences between the two.

But the issue with the flu is not that it will be confused with COVID...... (although it might) I think that’s the least of our worries. It’s the fact that it can lead to hospitalisation - particularly in the older generation and this will consequently put our hospitals under even more strain.

Can the NHS cope with a season of flu running concurrently with a season of COVID?

Haven’t heard much about Australia, but I guess that was the reality for them since our summer was their winter ? They must have had flu and COVID, but I guess at the time they were in lockdown so people might not have contracted flu in such high numbers?

Personally - I think the Government are damned if they do and damned if they don’t at the moment

If there is another lockdown, its down to Johnson, he hasn't led us, he has followed.... go to the office, help out to eat out, care homes (no mandatory testing and cases are on the rise) given PPE contracts - not fulfilled - to his cronies and has not enforced the rules on his own advisors.

But most importantly, he has fucked up testing and Track n trace, we would have had a working app weeks ago if he'd worked with Google/Apple instead of thinking his techies could do better.

Icanflyhigh · 13/09/2020 22:17

I too think it's a huge possibility. Fully expecting to be locked down before Christmas :-(

Pixxie7 · 13/09/2020 22:17

I think the government is protecting itself against the possibility of them having to pay for anything further by blaming individual groups. Accepting the accuracy of this people can’t afford a further lockdown so wouldn’t comply anyway.

NHT32 · 13/09/2020 22:17

I’m sure if they closed all pubs again for a month the numbers would come down again. They need to do this and support the pub industry and workers. That charity football match the other week where 1/3 of those there got it, sums it up. Few beers and social distancing goes out of the window!

TempsPerdu · 13/09/2020 22:20

Also, the timing of a second UK lockdown could potentially coincide with the fallout from a no deal Brexit... now that would be fun.

user1471439240 · 13/09/2020 22:21

People will comply when deaths rise once more. It can be hoped that i will not come to that. The Media narrative has clearly changed this week, they will have first knowledge of what is coming down the path, a heads up if you like. It is a fine line, but tougher compliance by penalty is the clear path, going forward. There is no option for a best out of three scenario.

lotusbell · 13/09/2020 22:21

@lunar1, same. A lot of our pubs have stated on social media they won't let anyone in with a BL postcode and it's kicked off big time. Mind you, my local need to get their local regulars in order before banning people from neighbouring towns, no social distancing and utter yobbish behaviour.

ssd · 13/09/2020 22:22

What charity football match??

CoronaIsWatching · 13/09/2020 22:22

If they did the original lockdown 2 weeks earlier we wouldn't be in this position in the first place. Shower of shite government. They can't implement schemes like Help out to eat out then blame us for cases rising. I'm not complying with another lockdown

daisychain01 · 13/09/2020 22:23

Local lockdowns in areas such as Leicester that were theoretically meant to be in place to avoid having to lockdown nationally, would be a lot more successful if people didn't deliberately flout the regs by going out to pubs and restaurants in surrounding areas that aren't in lockdown, defeating to whole object of containing the spread through local lockdowns.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 13/09/2020 22:24

there is zero chance of another national lockdown

imho obviously

speakout · 13/09/2020 22:24

I have no idea but sad to see empty shelves in ASDA today- pasta rice, canned stuff, all gone.

Cam77 · 13/09/2020 22:26

We’ve got the suicidal Brexit still to come don’t forget. Tories won’t be happy until England and the Union are in tatters. At least they’ll get to blame it on Covid. But make no mistake from Jan 1st Brexit will bring the U.K. to its knees. Sure, it would have screwed us at the best of times but we’re in serious trouble now. If you wanted Scotland and N.Ireland out the door, a rapid expansion of food banks, and a few of the existing top 0.01% making a killing on their futures stocks, you’ll be happy though.

RingORingORoses · 13/09/2020 22:26

You’ll have to comply

Nowhere will be open so all you will achieve is dead relatives

Also, what if the colder weather has a different effect on this virus? Or as humans, we suffer it in a different way?

Colder weather might make us weaker, more susceptible or, it might start affecting children.

Stinkyguineapig · 13/09/2020 22:26

I honestly believe too many jobs were classed as
‘Key worker’ jobs last time.

In what way? In that their children could go to school, or they could go to work...?

Delta1 · 13/09/2020 22:27

No way.

Fololomolo · 13/09/2020 22:27

Where are you speakout?

NebularNerd · 13/09/2020 22:27

@speakout

I have no idea but sad to see empty shelves in ASDA today- pasta rice, canned stuff, all gone.
Really?!
Bol87 · 13/09/2020 22:28

Assuming they mean the one that was on telly? I hadn’t heard anything about them catching anything..
