Another National Lockdown

What are the chances ? Sky News are reporting the possibility and a second lockdown has become a reality in Israel.

How likely do you think it is ?

Nothing would surprise me.

I hated lockdown and coped extremely badly. Didnt educate my kids and my MH was shot.

But I think I would cope better in winter. I know what to do now. Around the end of April I went into town on my own ( which was deserted) most Sundays to force myself out and not become agrophobic. Dont fancy that in the rain!

One thing that does concern me longer term is that haven't taken my son with ASD out in public since March so neither his little sister. Walks and such we do, but no shopping, no going out to any cafes.

user781210 · 13/09/2020 21:47

I hope not, my mental health won’t cope with another lockdown

LadyofTheManners · 13/09/2020 21:47

Ridiculous.
The highest my area has had of cases for over a month now has been 12 in a week. Why on earth should we be forced into lockdown and businesses threatened because some towns can't get their head round what Social Distancing means?

Flibbitygibbit · 13/09/2020 21:47

On its way I'm sure. Am in Leicester and we've never actually got out properly yet !

Torvean32 · 13/09/2020 21:47

No way should a national lockdown occur when the high cases are in defined areas. They would need to to properly lockdown affected areas first.

I'd be incredibly pissed off to be locked down when our cases are low.

We had an extra strict 3 week lockdown, for much less cases.

Personally i think there should be a travel ban in areas with high cases.
I cannot see schools closing being benificial.

Also i dont think we can be compared to Israel.

Thinkpinkstink · 13/09/2020 21:48

I very much doubt it. The Government can't afford to dig us out of the sort of recession it'd cause.

My expectations are: shops will remain open, hospitality will remain open, borders / flights remain open (with some quarantine from countries where visitors are largely traveling for leisure, not business). Schools will remain open, the only restrictions (aside from local hotspots) will be:

  • Personal socialising
  • Wearing masks
  • Shielding for relevant groups
SqidgeBum · 13/09/2020 21:48

Nope. Wont happen. The country literally cannot afford it. The furlough scheme alone cost the UK 14 billion A MONTH, and then you add on the lack of revenue from the high street, bars, restaurants etc. There is a reason Boris is saying 'dont see Granny' rather than 'dont go into the office'. There wont be the compliance there was before with not seeing family and friends. People wont accept having kids off school again. They are probably waving this in the public's face as a form of scare tactic to try to get people to stop socialising.

MarshaBradyo · 13/09/2020 21:48

Shielding and ceasing indoor socialisation, maybe a curfew

Going to be bad enough but leave SD businesses open. They won’t be the cause of much spread

LadyofTheManners · 13/09/2020 21:48

@Flibbitygibbit

Well then clearly it's pointless and doesn't work then if Leicester is still in lockdown and barely left it yet the numbers are still high?
Malachite234 · 13/09/2020 21:49

Personally - I think the Government are damned if they do and damned if they don’t at the moment.

If they lockdown - the effects on the economy, school pupils and mental health will be disastrous. There will be uproar.

If they don’t lives will be lost and there will be uproar.

I get the sense that nobody wants to stick to the rule of 6 or the quarantining when returning etc. They are fatigued and feel frustrated ( myself included). So what’s the solution? Do we just keep going from extreme to extreme - 4 months of relative normality then 4 months of lockdown?

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 13/09/2020 21:49

They won’t.

Lots more local lockdowns coming but they won’t do a national one.

Flibbitygibbit · 13/09/2020 21:51

And rising unfortunately 🙄 People taking no notice of the rules etc. Sick of it now.

RB68 · 13/09/2020 21:52

I think it will be in the next month or so (by half term say)

Frazzled2207 · 13/09/2020 21:52

i don't think they will - at least not unless (until) death rates start to rise dramatically. Economically it would be absolutely disastrous.

However a total ban on socialising could happen I reckon, as well as near total lockdown in some very specific areas.

Thinkpinkstink · 13/09/2020 21:52

And to echo what @sqidgeBum said, the government want to keep us scared right now, so we do take precautions and don't flout the 6-person-rule.

And to be honest I'm okay with the 6 person rule, if I've got 1 litre of Not Catching COVID Luck, and I 'spend' 200ml travelling on the train, and 200ml sending DD nursery, and 200ml going to the supermarket, and 200mk seeing my parents and ILs... That only leaves me 200ml left, so illegal raves dinner parties and birthday parties are off the cards.

Alwaysinpain · 13/09/2020 21:53

@JulesCobb

I honestly believe too many jobs were classed as ‘Key worker’ jobs last time.
TOTALLY AGREE!!!!! 👏🏻
annabel85 · 13/09/2020 21:53

Let's hope these people take the warning and start following the rules. We might just prevent it.

Friendsoftheearth · 13/09/2020 21:53

This is a very large stick to try and ensure people listen, it is for our own benefit, as a national lockdown would be an unmitigated disaster for everyone in this country. So we are being nudged rather hard to do the right thing. If we see people ignoring the restrictions, which are now law and no longer guidelines I imagine yes we will have no other option.

There will be a lot of pressure in society to conform, because everyone loses out if it goes wrong, we are all invested whether we like it or not.

user1471439240 · 13/09/2020 21:54

It would be political suicide not to. The Government always gets the blame. The virus doesn’t care.

Valenciaoranges · 13/09/2020 21:55

I just don’t see the evidence for a national lockdown

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 13/09/2020 21:55

Nope. Can't afford it and it's unenforceable.

mrsmarkgruffalo · 13/09/2020 21:55

Will be difficult for Johnson to tell us all to stop doing x y or z when he advocates breaking the law and supports people who get round lockdown for their wives birthday.

This^

Political suicide to do it I reckon.

No one wants it atm

Ecosse · 13/09/2020 21:56

We just can’t afford it. The focus has to be on shielding the vulnerable- the government should lay their wages and make sure they can get food deliveries.

Another lockdown would not be fair on young people who would largely be the ones losing their jobs and educations.

Hopefully though it won’t be necessary. Spain and France have been seeing huge numbers of cases for weeks now, yet neither are reporting large numbers of deaths.

oakleaffy · 13/09/2020 21:56

@Fluffycloudland77

It won’t work though, Dominic Cummings didn’t abide by the rules last time & people won’t forget that.
This! Cumming's deceit, lies, his ''Do as I say, not as I do'' really caused people to think ''Fuck this...I'm off for a holiday''.

I have been observing social distancing, but lots of people aren't. Eso young people.
In lockdown, never seen so many young people smoking weed on local fields ... Spliff sharing?...Nutsoid.
