To enforce social distancing.

No doubt they will find many volunteers on Mumsnet!

Oh joy.

Some MN users will be orgasmic hearing this

Bakeittothelimit · 09/09/2020 18:38

@RainbowParadise

They should have the guts to call it what it actually is. The gestapo
Reductio ad Hitlerum.
Nestme · 09/09/2020 18:38

I take it all the people who are fine with this are now all going to be happy to wear a mask outside...

The80sweregreat · 09/09/2020 18:38

Of course the police won't do any more or less than they have done already. They are constantly being interviewed on the radio and we are told ' there isn't really any more capacity'
They have been cut to the bone and the ones I've heard seem to have lost hope with most of this.
It's now a service and not a force and many crimes are not followed up. The Marshall's won't be able to do much really. The people already doing as they are told will do so and many won't bother or never have!

cyclingmad · 09/09/2020 18:38

Haha this site makes me laigh complete panic mode and all sorts of shit being made up back in reality most people just follow guidlines and Marshalls or no marshal's grt on with life.

Leave you guys to go down your warped view of everything the governmenf does.

mrsnorrismeow · 09/09/2020 18:39

cyclingmad

U OK hun?

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/09/2020 18:39

@Inkpaperstars

I mean yeah, the gestapo were all about protecting health and saving lives right? Their absolutely fucking raison d'être that was.

Generally, most dictatorships / totalitarian regimes start building up their ideas under that premise. I suggest you read books from survivors of the NK regime such as "The Girl With Seven Names" to see some examples of this. They dont just flick to 1984 overnight there is a gradual erosion of people's liberties, usually under the premise of people's safety.

Hitler didnt just flick a switch overnight. Plenty of buildup: the Wiemar republic, hyperinflation, mass unemployment. There was such a gradual reduction of people's liberties that by the time really really bad changes were happening, it was far too late to push back against it, and people were too far down the rabbit hole.

bossyrossy · 09/09/2020 18:40

I would rather be reminded by a marshal to put my mask on or keep my distance than see the rate of COVID infection rise dramatically putting the vulnerable members of our society at risk.

I’d also like to spend Christmas with my family, which I won’t be able to do if we are in total lockdown.

If marshals help keep the idiots who think that social distancing doesn’t apply to them from spreading the virus, then so be it.

nosswith · 09/09/2020 18:41

Remember, the government is run by Dominic Cummings. He does not have to put himself up for re-election.

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 18:42

bossyrossy - you won’t be spending Christmas with your family. I think it’s time for us to accept that now.

I honestly don't think having COVID Secure Marshalls in town and city centres is the beginning of a totalitarian state or a gestapo. I'm not keen on the idea as it could attract some tinpot dictators, but people need to keep this in perspective.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 09/09/2020 18:42

'honestly won’t be surprised if you are banned from hugging your spouse and children next with a £100 fine. No sex allowed and mandatory abortions if you break the law and her pregnant.'

People are being told not to socialise in groups more than 6. It really isn't that bad. Cases are soaring and admissions/deaths will follow as shown in France. Should they do nothing? But people complained they didnt act quick enough before. Make your minds up. Do you want them to do something or not?

Having said that 'covid marshals' isn't a great choice of title as it's clearly triggered many a snowflake. Community support advice team or similar would be better.

friendlycat · 09/09/2020 18:42

Goodness me. The sensitive overeaction on here is nothing short of laughable. Just follow the rules laid down and everything will be fine. It's a pandemic. It doesn't care what flavour government is sitting in office, it doesn't care how many children you have. It doesn't care that you want to see you Mum and her cat. A pandemic operates as a pandemic does.

Friendsoftheearth · 09/09/2020 18:43

funky you haven't actually died though, it is about priorities, if we allow groups and parties to carry on regardless, then many people could die. Particularly once we are well into the second wave. Same with spitting, coughing in a person's face. We saw the very sad case of the underground worker dying from covid after he was deliberately coughed on. That is manslaughter. We need to see this for what it is.

The crimes you describe will not end in manslaughter charges or innocent people dying.

Those that ignore the rules may not realise the consequences of their casual get together with a 'handful' of households but the outcome is the same.
You wouldn't allow someone to walk around with a rucksack of explosives, well the covid carrier with no symptoms carries the same threat to others if they don't SD and follow the rules. Think about it. A super spreader can infect hundreds, and out of those many may die.

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 18:44

friendlycat - ah but the virus knows if you are in an office or pub. It knows not to infect there! It also knows when you are at home with 6 other people!

PennyDreadfuI · 09/09/2020 18:44

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

PennyDreadful, Why would you be wanting that? Is that your priority? Those for whom mask-wearing is subject to exemption?

Ignorant isn't the word.

I'm not sure I get your point?

I'm exempt. In the last week or so alone I've had a man hissing in my face about my stinking diseased breath, been stared/tutted at more times than I can count, 'overheard' (by which I mean the women in question said it loud enough for me and the rest of the bus to hear) some people on a bus say I was filthy and stupid, been told I couldn't enter a charity shop, been called a super spreader...

Imagine if people this ignorant and nasty ended up being marshalls.

Chloemol · 09/09/2020 18:44

Well just comply with the damn rules

Stop whinging on MN and get your own house in order (aimed at those MNetters who freely admit they dont follow the guidelines, or use their own common sense to adapt them to suit them, as evidenced by loads of posts today)

And yes I know certain Government officials also need to comply

But we are here now because people haven’t complied. And I don’t understand why people didn’t get the old rules, I managed along with thousands of others

Nestme · 09/09/2020 18:45

Well if we must have marshals please let them have powers to force all the attention seeking twits that "can't wear a mask because I am claustrophobic" to put them on or carry a lanyard or medical exception card that explains how they have a real physical or psychological reason not to wear one, rather than the scores of women I know who do neither.

SomewhereEast · 09/09/2020 18:45

@Funkypolar

This!

Also can you imagine the kind of people who will actually apply to be Covid marshalls, and the abysmal level of training they will receive.

mrsnorrismeow · 09/09/2020 18:45

I'll be continuing to do what I want. Does that involve raves? No. Does it involve having 7 people in my home instead of 6? Yes.

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 18:46

Careful mrsnorrismeow, a MNetter is frantically trying to find your IP address whilst wetting themselves with glee to “report” you!

Spot on!

GetOffYourHighHorse · 09/09/2020 18:47

'it doesn't care how many children you have. It doesn't care that you want to see you Mum and her cat. '

But but what if I've got 6 kids and 2 cats will the Covid Marshalls arrest me??

Nestme · 09/09/2020 18:47

But we are here now because people haven’t complied.

That's not why we are here, it really isn't.

We are here because Covid is caused by a respiratory virus that there isn't a vaccine for yet and the government didn't have the balls to either do a proper, timely lockdown initiall or to commit to full herd immunity from the get go.

Friendsoftheearth · 09/09/2020 18:48

I would also add if you are deliberately coughing on someone and you know you have covid, that is in fact murder, particularly if it can be proved you targeted the person concerned, and they died as a result.

I think you need to stop thinking about this with the mindset that this is not a crime, it is a crime.

It has to be a crime because you can kill other people.

We can not sit back and say just crack on with your gatherings, parties and kids multiple playdates if it means that someone else dies or ends up with life long health issues.

It is too serious now. I am wondering why so many people are just so complacent! We have to do everything we can to stop the virus in any way we can.
