To enforce social distancing.

No doubt they will find many volunteers on Mumsnet!

I wonder when people with unpopular opinions are going to start to "disappear" and the next election postponed for "public health reasons". Welcome to the dystopia.

RainbowParadise · 09/09/2020 18:27

Right now though we have an immense struggle to keep this virus under control, and many people who will not make an effort. So we have to hope that the fact the this government is, in terms of political philosophy, inclined in the very opposite direction, will count for something.

But most people have made an effort. I'm tired of all the screaming on here about people breaking the rules- the government have gaslighted people into blaming others (and now the convenient scapegoats are young people), to deflect from their own hideous, incompetent handling of this from day one.

Name one thing the government has got right during the pandemic. I'm genuinely struggling to think of one.

mrsnorrismeow · 09/09/2020 18:27

My father came here as a political refugees in the seventies, having been tortured and imprisoned under a totalitarian regime. It started with small things like curfews "for people's own good".

People sneering about it being "spoiled" to compare shit like this to the gestapo, do you have experience living in such regimes? Because they start innocently enough.

I'm happy to wear a mask, to SD from strangers, to avoid large gatherings. But telling me I can't be in a group of seven, in my own home? Get fucked. I'll gladly pay the fine.

PhilCornwall1 · 09/09/2020 18:27

@PennyDreadfuI

I can't wait for the 'marshalls' to get to work on the mask exempt.
I'll let you know how that goes, could be fun!!
The80sweregreat · 09/09/2020 18:28

It was bad enough with some employees being jobsworths with loud hailers ( at one shop I went to telling us we were queuing up in the wrong place ) now there is the vision of 'covid marshalls ' with more powers, no doubt.
I know it's got to be done , but it's depressing that it will go back to being this way. I hope some shops step up their hand gel : went to a big supermarket one morning and both bottles were empty and had obviously been chucked outside without being checked! I hope the new Marshall's will top them up ( if they are to be employed at any shops that is)
I feel sorry for the ones manning the pubs though.
The paper masks will get soggy in rain as well with winter looming. Happy days, not.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 09/09/2020 18:28

PennyDreadful, Why would you be wanting that? Is that your priority? Those for whom mask-wearing is subject to exemption?

Ignorant isn't the word.

LadyofTheManners · 09/09/2020 18:28

God this is getting ridiculous now
Why not just put them in a fetching official uniform modelled on 1930s Germany whilst they're at it.

TooLittleTooLate80 · 09/09/2020 18:29

@Funkypolar

“If a frog is placed into a pot of boiling water it will immediately try to jump out; but if it's placed into a pot of cool water that's gradually heated until boiling, it will stay put and never try to jump out.”

Hmmm!

Just as an aside, that's never been true.
Friendsoftheearth · 09/09/2020 18:29

How will it be enforced?

Marshals will politely ask members of the public to take care of social distancing, disperse groups etc. If the public do not listen, then the police will arrive and arrest/fine. Very similar to what is already in place in town centres on Friday and Saturday nights. It will be a prod in the right direction, and then the police will do the rest.

The alternative to marshals is non compliance and 85,000 people dead, I think I would rather the marshals. After all I value human life and have no intention of ignoring SAGE and partying in the middle of a pandemic.

Given the modelling this is pretty lite touch (for now) Those that are saying about the gestapo probably haven't read the report about the army deployment that is planned in the worst case scenario (yes it is that serious)

HeresMe · 09/09/2020 18:30

See that's what people who are getting offended at the term gestapo I don't get, they seem to think, there wasn't a build up, in any totalalrian regime it doesn't start just one day there is a build up to worse and worse.

SoManyActivities · 09/09/2020 18:30

There would be some absolute prime candidates on Mumsnet for this job!

Lol how many have read this thread and starting googling to find out where they can volunteer?
dementedma · 09/09/2020 18:31

Utterly terrifying. Combine the Marshalls with the proposed hate crime bill in Scotland and you have a dictatorship

GabsAlot · 09/09/2020 18:31

why is anyone surprised theyb said they trusted us to use common sense and we havent so what do you expect

Friendsoftheearth · 09/09/2020 18:32

BTW I can't stand jobs worths, I walked out of shop today after being told to stand on a circle like a three year old by some jumped up shop assistant.

But I do think we need to be much more serious now about enforcement if we have any hope of containing the virus.

People in Britain are arrogant cocks and think oh well, it'll never happen here.

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 18:32

The police didn’t even turn up when I was mugged or burgled. I got a crime reference number and a leaflet about counselling. Yet they can arrest groups of 7?

I don’t understand.

@Funkypolar

I honestly won’t be surprised if you are banned from hugging your spouse and children next with a £100 fine. No sex allowed and mandatory abortions if you break the law and her pregnant.
Jesus, your hyperbole is painful.
mrsnorrismeow · 09/09/2020 18:33

You do realise that some of us actually have no desire to "party" but merely to see family in our homes if one household is four and the other is three.

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 18:34

ClementineWoolysocks - well, wait and see! If my posts are causing you physical pain, I kindly suggest you don’t read them.

The police didn’t even turn up when I was mugged or burgled.

They did literally nothing last year when a speeding driver nearly mowed my 3 year old and I down on a residential road, then followed us into a shop, screaming abuse threatening to knife me.

Friendsoftheearth · 09/09/2020 18:35

It will only have to be enforced a few times before people get the picture funky The same thing at the rave when they fined a handful of ravers 10,000gbp. You make an example to the rest.

What would you rather another 60,000 dead?

You can't actually be serious when you say you believe people will use their common sense and understand the need for regulations at the moment, because we can see that is not the case already.

RainbowParadise · 09/09/2020 18:36

They did nothing when I reported my ex for abuse and harassment either
Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 18:36

I really don’t understand how the police have never helped me or mrsnorrismeow but they can fine someone for not wearing a mask.
