To enforce social distancing.

No doubt they will find many volunteers on Mumsnet!

I think the conspiracy theory people got it right after all. 1984 coming true.

LizzieSiddal · 09/09/2020 17:09

They should have the guts to call it what it actually is. The gestapo

Idiotic comment. Just like most of this thread. You all need a tinfoil hat.

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 17:10

I honestly won’t be surprised if you are banned from hugging your spouse and children next with a £100 fine. No sex allowed and mandatory abortions if you break the law and her pregnant.

Quarantine camps (or facilities) have been introduced in NZ. You cannot leave the facility until you have taken a test. These measures are from horror films but they are happening right here right now.

Moondust001 · 09/09/2020 17:10

@LizzieSiddal

Well if people are breaking the laws, then Marshall’s should be knocking in their door.

If everyone just followed the rules- wash your hands and most importantly keep 2 metres away from everyone, the virus would die out pretty quickly. It’s people’s (Mostly young people) inability to do this which is causing these new rules.

You are delusional. There is absolutely not a shred of evidence that any of those actions will cause the virus to die out. And no scientific theorem to support this being even possible. But thank you for demonstrating why powers of this sort should be handed to nobody - most people haven't a clue.
Torvean32 · 09/09/2020 17:10

Nothing to worry about if you folliw rules. For the ppl who flagrantly dont then you'll be fined... no sympathy.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 09/09/2020 17:11

Banning people from gathering in their homes with others not of their own family, marshals to separate people, a curfew. None of this is ever in the interest of public health, NONE of it; tyranny, no matter what pretext you use to try to justify it, is unacceptable and should always be so.

Alex50 · 09/09/2020 17:11

Frightening isn’t it and a lot people jumping for joy at the thought of being spied on. I could cry, I never thought the UK would turn into this 😭

That’s quite offensive Hmm

And yes I can see some people gleefully rubbing their hands about it

And everyone holds up New Zealand as such an amazing example of how to deal with Covid.
Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 17:13

In China, abortions are enforced for some people and concentration camps are a reality. And probably in other countries too.

@Blue565

It's like the Benjamin Franklin quote "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety"

Although that's exceptionally dramatic

I think it's pretty spot on, to be honest.
AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/09/2020 17:13

We appear to have stepped through some sort of hysterical looking glass where the infection of a rising but statistically minute number of viral infections in otherwise healthy young adults and the deaths of an infinitesimally small number of elderly people with underlying health conditions merits economic ruination and wholesale withdrawal of civil liberties.

That people are accepting this and some are even supporting it tells me that the Nudge Unit has a lot to answer for

Ok, now I think people are getting a bit carried away
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/09/2020 17:14

I've actually seen posts on here saying we should be more like China. Some people terrify me.

bobbieflekman · 09/09/2020 17:14

They should have the guts to call it what it actually is. The gestapo

what an awful thing to say, you do know what the Gestapo did, right?

If you don't follow the marshal's interpretation of the rules. There, fixed that for you. Works great in the US, doesn't it - just ask George Floyd, oh, wait. No sympathy for any dumb fucker who thinks this is acceptable.

Newsflash: most respiratory viruses never 'die out'. Some we have quite effective vaccines for, some less so effective and some never.

amusedtodeath1 · 09/09/2020 17:16

Worrying about Corona virus = hysterical. Comparing Covid Marshalls to the Gestapo = perfectly reasonable Confused

Yeah.... conspiracy theorists uniteHmm

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 17:16

“If a frog is placed into a pot of boiling water it will immediately try to jump out; but if it's placed into a pot of cool water that's gradually heated until boiling, it will stay put and never try to jump out.”

Hmmm!

Yes, want to know how they started out? It wasn't the same as how they were at the end of it wouldn't have been accepted. That it was allowed their duties to progress to what we know from history. Keep that in mind when you throw away your civil liberties - wars are far greater threats to public health than covid19, but that's not what you're being led to believe, and you're buying it.
Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 17:17

The BBC drama Years and Years was a look into our future.

God help us if some Mumsnetters become marshals @Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd, so many have their own version of the rules!

EdithWeston · 09/09/2020 17:17

It would have to be the police who gave penalty notices, would it not?

I've seen too many people saying that they'll ignore the rules because no-one is enforcing them. This is indeed draconian, but it becaine necessary because of those who regularly took the piss, or just plain defied.

I expect they'll start by seeking cooperation, and breaking up large groups, reminding publicans and other business owners of their duties.

Looks like EHOs might also be involved (or did I mishear that?) in assessing whether premises are Covid secure - and presumably they'd use their existing powers to close business which pose a health risk until the business can demonstrate compliance

Mywifeandkids1 · 09/09/2020 17:18

It’s so scary 😭

Mother40 · 09/09/2020 17:19

People have been very lax with the rules.lately, and lots acting like there is no virus. I think this is a good thing for people who are not following the rules. How are cases going to decrease of people are carrying on as normal?
