To enforce social distancing.

No doubt they will find many volunteers on Mumsnet!

The second wave is going to come in the middle of winter, and if nothing is done we are going to have the mother of all death rates (and no doubt you will whinge about that as well)

Well at least it'll get it over and done with.

PickAChew · 09/09/2020 18:08

Will they be enforcing the rules or "The Rules"?

TSSDNCOP · 09/09/2020 18:08

It is the actual Mumsnet wet dream. Thousands of net twitchers counting to 6 and dobbing in their neighbours. They couldn't reach a consensus on what the original guidelines meant, let alone what these are about.

If this rule of 6 is going to be so critical to decreasing the infection rate why not implement it at 4am Thursday rather than Monday?

You can bet big business donors especially SKYsport, Betfair, breweries etc are somehow involved.

I wouldn't even be surprised if this announcement was designed to deflect from the Brexit negotiations and are we committing a crime or not?

It's all just a woeful fuck up. We point and laugh at Trump thinking we are so superior, but the whole world is laughing at us at the same time.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/09/2020 18:09

So you support enforced quarantine camps @easythatsfragile? Wouldn't it be better to make it easier for people to quarantine in their own home?

The way some people are prepared to throw away their civil liberties is terrifying.

jessstan2 · 09/09/2020 18:10

I 'get' your point, Inkpaperstars, but I remember when I was young people referred to the police as 'the gestapo', amongst other things. Young people that is. Of course technically it's wrong but it isn't meant as badly as it sounds.

I would liken them to traffic wardens.

wildcherries · 09/09/2020 18:10

I too agree that this is the thin end of the wedge and I'm baffled why some are celebrating the infringements on liberty? It's really not a good thing and a dystopian society is born from this kind of acceptance. He may as well call them the Eyes.

RainbowParadise · 09/09/2020 18:10

@Inkpaperstars

It's incredibly spoilt and offensive for people to compare this to the gestapo. Talk about clueless, 21st century first world whining....

I mean yeah, the gestapo were all about protecting health and saving lives right? Their absolutely fucking raison d'être that was.

And as for protecting health and saving lives, it's kicking a can down the road. So many privileged people on here have no idea of the other health implications, particularly mental health, of the effects of lockdown and continued restrictions.
Inkpaperstars · 09/09/2020 18:10

Yeah of course, that's exactly what I meant. That they are just like the actual gestapo

Well you did say, they should call it what it actually is..the gestapo.

Forgive me for not reading the complex subtext there. These are inflammatory terms to throw around.

Alex50 · 09/09/2020 18:10

Yeah less tests means if you can’t prove you are negative you can’t go to work or school, scary times.

I also said there's a lot of humourless and professionally offended on here 🤷‍♀️

Should have included pedants of course.

Devlesko · 09/09/2020 18:12

Well the job won't get done then, students can't distance themselves Grin Grin I live near to college and a uni, heaven help us, lol.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 09/09/2020 18:13

@Gladysthesphinx

Human beings have a tendency to be petty vindictive and spiteful. There’s a strong human instinct - regrettably- to tell tales & to try to get other people into trouble; to exploit a small amount of power over others and expand it. To revel in enforcing power over others. These human tendencies are not something a responsible government should be encouraging. If a system of criminal penalties depends on using these tendencies then that’s a sign this system is irremediably flawed & lacks public support needed to legitimise it. It’s worth reading about the GDR and the eager Stasi informants. Encouraging people to inform and to interfere with their neighbours is the hallmark of a state which is heading in the wrong direction.
👏👏👏
anditgoeson · 09/09/2020 18:14

So glad you've brought that up OP it gave me chills too. It's scary now and I've been pretty pragmatic up to now.

DanaScully53 · 09/09/2020 18:15

Should have done it right at the start of lockdown IMHO.

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 18:16

Well rather than going out to support the high street, I will be remaining working from home and ordering online. I’m not queuing up outside shops in the winter rain being shouted at whilst my mask gets soggy.

@LizzieSiddal

Well if people are breaking the laws, then Marshall’s should be knocking in their door.

If everyone just followed the rules- wash your hands and most importantly keep 2 metres away from everyone, the virus would die out pretty quickly. It’s people’s (Mostly young people) inability to do this which is causing these new rules.

What are you talking about?

We had months of hand washing and SD and the virus didn't 'die out pretty quickly'.

Young people (like the rest of us) have been told it's ok to go to work on packed trains, socialise (to the point where food was half price for most of August), go shopping... Ageism isn't a good look, you know.

And how will marshalls police hand washing, precisely? Knock on doors and do spot checks to make sure our hands smell of soap?

*Christ, I can just imagine the type of people who will want to be Covid wardens. Curtain twitching arseholes who have a shit fit if you park outside their house.“

No, assuming it’s a paid role they’ll be poor bastards who’ve lost their jobs and desperately need the money so don’t take it out on them.

CeibaTree · 09/09/2020 18:19

I don't think people should be allowed to volunteer for this kind of role - can you imagine the type of people that will apply!

PhilCornwall1 · 09/09/2020 18:19

It is the actual Mumsnet wet dream.

🤣🤣🤣

PennyDreadfuI · 09/09/2020 18:19

I can't wait for the 'marshalls' to get to work on the mask exempt.

ZezetteEpouseX · 09/09/2020 18:19

What's the point of having rule if there isn't anyone to enforce them?

Be honest, how many of us would actually religiously stick to the speed limit if we didn't risk fines or worst for speeding? I am not even talking about driving like a lunatic, but everyone must have seen these beautiful safe, straight, full visibility roads that are so tempting..

Actually, many people don't even bother respecting the limits, so imagine how many would at all without actual consequences.

It's not the marshalls we need to query, it's the actual rules!

AntiHop · 09/09/2020 18:20

Those people comparing this to the Gestapo or a police state. This is seriously insulting to those people who have actually experienced the Gestapo or an authoritarian regime (which includes the older members of my family).

Inkpaperstars · 09/09/2020 18:20

So many privileged people on here have no idea of the other health implications, particularly mental health, of the effects of lockdown and continued restrictions.

That may be true, I don't really know what people on here are aware of. Although I can't see how exponential growth of infection will not have the same or worse implications.

I think the marshals are likely to be as mismanaged and flawed as everything else the government has done, I just think people are misunderstanding the motivations.

I know it isn't always about motivation...something well meant can become sinister if it means people get used to certain methods and norms. Right now though we have an immense struggle to keep this virus under control, and many people who will not make an effort. So we have to hope that the fact the this government is, in terms of political philosophy, inclined in the very opposite direction, will count for something.

There often seems to be a default attitude among some that the government wants to do all these things and has just been waiting for any excuse....but actually it is the very opposite of what they want to do. There is nothing in it for them except avoiding the crisis of exponential growth of this virus and all its economic and social fallout. All their other real political attitudes and hopes have been pushed aside for that, they are not being expressed by it.

annabel85 · 09/09/2020 18:24

I can't wait for the 'Marshalls' to get to work on the mask exempt.

In reality this is the kind of thing they'll be doing. They'll have to justify their jobs and hassling people without masks is easier than going up to a gang of 20 in a park.

I'd fully support 'the Marshalls' if they enforce the rules they're supposed to and don't just go after the easy targets like the police have throughout this.
