To enforce social distancing.

No doubt they will find many volunteers on Mumsnet!

I don't like the idea of a police state and feel uncomfortable with this announcement.

However, I also don't think it's that bloody difficult to refrain from meeting in large groups. It's not like anyone accidentally has a party at their home, or accidentally ends up having several of DC's friends for play dates etc.

I guarantee those ignoring the fairly basic requirements to avoid mixing households several households at once and not meeting in large groups will be some of the first to complain if and when there are any local lockdowns.

Right now I have a baby who hasn't met half their family yet because of lockdown, including elderly relatives. I've not seen some of my family in months. I'd quite like to see them for Christmas and that might have been possible had the government not screwed up back to school plans and if Joe Blogs had bothered to engage a brain cell and keep their distance from others.

If you don't follow the marshal's interpretation of the rules.

Em I’d you’ve listened correctly to the news today they have specifically made the rules very simple, at the request of the police and PHE(it whatever it is now). There is one New rule- 6 people In a gathering. That is it and it doesn’t need any “interpretation”.

And Sars has gone away.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 09/09/2020 17:20

@amusedtodeath1

Worrying about Corona virus = hysterical. Comparing Covid Marshalls to the Gestapo = perfectly reasonable Confused

Yeah.... conspiracy theorists uniteHmm

Labelling people who object to completely extraneous and unnecessary infringements on human civil liberties (rates of transmission of covid19, which does not kill the vast majority of people who contract it and doesn't even make a significant percentage of them ill, from randoms in the outdoors are stunningly low) conspiracy theorists to try to shut them up = Stupid AF
LizzieSiddal · 09/09/2020 17:20

*If you’d listened

trappedsincesundaymorn · 09/09/2020 17:20

So how would it work? If you're asked for your name and address what's to stop people giving false ones....or will ID cards become mandatory, because that's not scary at all is it?

HMSSophie · 09/09/2020 17:20

This government, this Tory, right wing government that so many people voted for, is a government I despise beyond words. But if there was a way to keep the economy going and sod the lives of the people, it is this very government who would do that. The fact that a right wing government is trying - abominably badly, and incompetently, but trying none the less - to minimise the damage to the health of the nation, means to me that Covid is actually far more of a risk. If that moron Johnson could get way with a few thousands dying, but a strong economy, he would. The fact has to be that if there were not measures in place, the death rate would be such that his party would be unelectable for a thousand years.

Haahaahaa! Yes, the police always follow specific rules correctly, much less untrained 'covid marshals'. And 'effectively' eradicated is not the same thing as completely. Viruses most often do not 'die out', they are made of genetic material, after all.
Alex50 · 09/09/2020 17:23

Oh yeah like the one who listens to her neighbour coughing through the walls and then watches her go out. She would have had her neighbour thrown in prison if she could, no questions asked. Frightening times. I’m so glad I don’t have neighbours , I can cough away in my own house.

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 17:24

I wonder if they will be paid (minimum wage?) or entirely volunteer led?

@bobbieflekman

They should have the guts to call it what it actually is. The gestapo

what an awful thing to say, you do know what the Gestapo did, right?

Yes, I know what they did. It was absolutely horrendous. Mumsnet is absolutely full of the humourless professionally offended these days. Along with the dementors who want to scream about people killing grannies by passing coronavirus to them.

You really can tell who would have been the collaborators anyway.

What’s stupid AF is people who seem to have forgotten that over 40,000 people have died. I know people who work in ICU, they are shell shocked by what they saw and had to deal with in March- May. If nothing is done now, the infection rate will carry on going up, older and venerable people will get it again and we will be back to square one re hospital admissions.

TheProvincialLady · 09/09/2020 17:25

Sure they will be just like the gestapo. Just like Air Raid Wardens were just like the gestapo, back in the day. Tin pot dictators rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of telling other people to sort their black out curtains. I bet you’d have shown the proper spirit and stood up for civil liberties. After all, there was no invasion of Britain. What a lot of fuss about nothing that was. Billions of pounds lost and it never even happened.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 09/09/2020 17:25

The Liberal Party took the UK into WWI. Millions died for what was effectively a children's crusade. They are now the Liberal Democrats and had no problems getting re-elected after that, several times, in fact.

This isn't a war Hmm.
Augustbreeze · 09/09/2020 17:26

He actually said these marshalls would be in city centres, ie helping with pedestrian flow etc.

The government announcement says they'll be newly qualified and recently retired environmental health officers.

I suspect there are a load of goady fuckers on this thread. I suggest people stop interacting.

Heaven forbid anyone be horrified about what is also happening to the life chances and opportunities for young children and people in their 20s/30s.
HeresMe · 09/09/2020 17:27

Not a Gestapo but the below isn't nice is it.

People abused in shops for not wearing a mask.
The disabled getting discrimated against.
Informing on your neighbours.
Not being allowed out unless you have done your test this morning.

Oh and the Covid Marshall's you can bet your bottom dollar they with be self important righteous pricks.

@loulouljh

What lovely individuals they will be!!!!
They're usually picking off people in smaller numbers, there won't be many volunteers to have to to enforce dispersal of crowds of people.
Inthesameboatatmo · 09/09/2020 17:28

All very worrying

No, they have not. They have come to understand the vast majority of people do not die, many do not become seriously ill, a great many do not even realise they have it and so they want to be allowed to live their lives within what is usually considered normal bounds in human societies, including a great number who need to earn a living (homelessness, bankruptcy, debt all are well-known threats to public health). People have been screeching that a second wave is coming for 4 months now. Yes, rates have gone up, but death rates are still relatively low. There is no justification for methods of martial law in such circumstances.

Comparing World War 2 to the current crisis is literally insane

@DurhamDurham

My next door neighbour will be in his element. He was timing us all when we went out for walks at the start of lockdown. He was trying to impose his own belief that we had to be back in an hour.
No way! Seriously? No .....
