To enforce social distancing.

No doubt they will find many volunteers on Mumsnet!

Why have the government waited until Monday for the new restrictions? It is not going to be a wet weekend, and if quarantine can be introduced within 48 hours of announcement, why not this 'rule of six'?

Simpler and possibly cheaper to close pubs and pay them compensation, and restrict places such as KFC and McDonalds to take away only. Notable how although there were relaxed rules in July, the increase only started after Eat Out to Help Out in August, where people gathered and sat down instead of leaving quickly.

Saucery · 09/09/2020 17:30

The government announcement says they'll be newly qualified and recently retired environmental health officers.

Yes, because just what you want after retiring from a proper job with a decent pension is to stand in a town centre telling sullen and aggressive twats how far apart to stand. Hmm
Imagine they’ll be queuing (at a sensible distance) round the block for that job.....

ClarkGriswoldsChristmastree19 · 09/09/2020 17:31

@LizzieSiddal

Well if people are breaking the laws, then Marshall’s should be knocking in their door.

If everyone just followed the rules- wash your hands and most importantly keep 2 metres away from everyone, the virus would die out pretty quickly. It’s people’s (Mostly young people) inability to do this which is causing these new rules.

I always laugh at these daft comments. I'm sure every dictator in the history of time has said that if people follow then rules then they have nothing to worry about!
LizzieSiddal · 09/09/2020 17:32

They have come to understand the vast majority of people do not die, many do not become seriously ill,

We ALL know and understand that. What you don’t seem to understand is that the small number of people who get it badly and require ICU Treatment, equates to tens of thousands in a population of 60 million.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 09/09/2020 17:32

Comparing World War 2 to the current crisis is literally insane

Yep, and the Gestapo were operational before war broke out, they were established in 1933, had a good 6 years chipping away . . .

LizzieSiddal · 09/09/2020 17:33

LizzieSiddal - isn’t it great that we live somewhere where we can interact with others like this and if you don’t like it you are free to hide the thread.

Yes it is.... Hmm

annabel85 · 09/09/2020 17:33

I've seen too many people saying that they'll ignore the rules because no-one is enforcing them. This is indeed draconian, but it becaine necessary because of those who regularly took the piss, or just plain defied.

The police have been powerless to stop raves and parties all summer, while making a headline by turning up to stop a kids birthday party to make it look like they're doing something.

All the comments here about 1984, what are the police actually going to do in reality? They'll pick on a few easy targets to make it look like they're actually doing something and the selfish will carry on doing what they want.

mrsBtheparker · 09/09/2020 17:34

Loving the outrage!

There is an expectation that we should be protected from Covid, the government is pilloried if they don't 'do something' yet when they do 'do something' they are pilloried.
If the rates really started to ramp up, and I know it's all a matter of how the figures are recorded and interpreted, there would be the inevitable faux outrage.
Looking at some of the pictures from round the country it's clear that the problem lies with large groups of relatively young people refusing to take the most basic precautions.

I understand it perfectly well. The nightengale hospitals were not overrun, some were never used, and we know more about the virus and how to treat it than we did then. It doesn't equate to 'tens of thousands'.
HeresMe · 09/09/2020 17:35

Where are these individuals being recruited from, who are these individual's, is it a paid role, is there a behavioural screening, is there a complaints procedure, what is limit of their powers.

These are important questions.

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 17:35

I bet the marshals get punched in the face a fair bit. Obviously I don’t agree with violence. Who would want to do that job with no actual powers of arrest just to be verbally abused and assaulted multiple times a day? Imagine trying to enforce distance outside a pub at 1am whilst drunk people abuse you.

We had issues with teenagers around here gathering in groups. The police didn’t go near them. I doubt a marshal would confront of group of 30 teenagers in a park.

And you'd need to be thick as mince not to see that the government are happy for the narrative to be that we brought this on ourselves! Of course it's not the government fault. All they done was let us out of lock down, encourage us to eat out and visit the pub after work.

We can wash our hands and wear our masks but this virus is here to catch regardless!

LizzieSiddal · 09/09/2020 17:36

Heaven forbid anyone be horrified about what is also happening to the life chances and opportunities for young children and people in their 20s/30s.

And we’re back to the beginning. Follow the rules- virus stays low- people can get on with their “Normal” lives, much quicker.

TheProvincialLady · 09/09/2020 17:36

I haven’t bothered with these threads before because they are so boring. Enjoy your metaphor and irony free zone 😀

Funkypolar · 09/09/2020 17:36

They will never let us go back to normal.

Why did they announce on a Friday that pubs had to close (in March) but allowed them to stay open for another Friday night leading the hordes to go for one last piss up, days before a national lockdown.

Why did they reopen pubs on a Saturday?

Not only that, but the football season starts this weekend. All the games are on telly but you can't go to the match. So people will go to the pub in their droves.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 09/09/2020 17:37

Oh, yeah, blame the young people! I'm sure they're going to take that lying down. And they will totally forget about it once they are the ones in power. 'The hand that rocks the cradle . . . '

TheDailyCarbuncle · 09/09/2020 17:38

@Funkypolar

They will never let us go back to normal.
They will eventually Funky. Hang in there. There will be a time when we look back on this and wonder if it did really happen. It's embarrassing.

Oh fuck off. Young people were told "you're the least at risk, go out and eat, drink and be merry... We'll even give you 50% off to do so" and now its all "young people are to blame for the spread. We can't do right for doing wrong.
HelloMissus · 09/09/2020 17:39

The police have more then enough powers to deal with any serious breaches - they choose not to get involved.

annabel85 · 09/09/2020 17:39

We had issues with teenagers around here gathering in groups. The police didn’t go near them. I doubt a marshal would confront of group of 30 teenagers in a park.

Of course they won't go near the worst offenders. They'll turn up at a kids birthday party when Mrs Jones from number 10 has phoned to say there's 7 people in the garden. They aren't going to deal with groups of lads.

lyralalala · 09/09/2020 17:39

My neighbour will be frantically googling to see how they can sign up to be a marshall

LizzieSiddal · 09/09/2020 17:40

They will never let us go back to normal.

Well people need to learn not to vote for incompetent, lying idiots. Also if we were still in the EU we’d have some recourse to the EU court of justice. All that’s gone now, so yes we are fucked.

RainbowParadise · 09/09/2020 17:40

Did you not hear Chris Whitty say today what a fantastic job people have actually been doing of following the rules?

Of course there's some people on here that love to throw around 'covidiots' and similar nonsense. The government never expected people to comply in such high numbers.

Like I said, it's clear to see who the collaborators would have been.

WrongKindOfFace · 09/09/2020 17:40

Christ, I can just imagine the type of people who will want to be Covid wardens. Curtain twitching arseholes who have a shit fit if you park outside their house.
