Isn't it time to close pubs and beauty salons

We are seeing a spike if we closed these activities down for 1 month then its likely schools can remain open. It would seem an obvious choice. I know these businesses circulate money in the economy but on balance their closure would protect a wider range of activities key to the economy.

Its perhaps worth looking to make balancing adjustments to avoid wide scale shutdowns. I agree Brexit is an economic catastrophe and on top of COVID has me worried.[/quote]
People aren't going to tolerate wide scale shutdowns any more. Many are no longer worried about bloody Covid because a) it's a mild illness in the vast majority and for a not insignificant number, not an illness at all b) increasing numbers are going to be worried about avoiding homelessness after the furlough scheme ends c) increasing numbers will become unemployed as a result of the lockdown and no deal Brexit.

The only thing worth looking into is trying to avoid extreme financial fallout from no deal Brexit, which isn't happening, either.

@Kaktus

These checks are happening in my area. Every business in my village had an inspection at the weekend

Ours too.

That's good to hear

Yes the lack of contact detail records was quite a shock when I ventured out last. I was in Germany and France not long ago and every time we went into a venue we had to provide details.

Unnecessary travelling, eh? Tut tut

itsgettingweird · 08/09/2020 21:52

@butterfly86

I have my own beauty business and I could not be any safer if I tried! Mask visor apron gloves and client in a mask. All surfaces and every single item that's been touched during a treatment gets sanitised before the next client arrives and all ppe changed. The issue here is not salons!
Agree. And I know because I know a few people a few people who own their own salon businesses that you do this anyway (wipe downs rather than masks)

From my experience they are extremely hygienic as par of the course.

Same as my work environment. Special school.
We've added some measures but hygiene was always there and we do PPE/hand hygiene etc training all the time anyway!

So international travel is fine, is it? Just the things you don’t personally use that should be closed.
MaxNormal · 08/09/2020 21:54

Oh the hypocrisy.

Eng123 · 08/09/2020 21:55

@Kaktus
Travel restrictions (quarantine) are in place as part of continuing control measures.

OP posts:
ShamPayne · 08/09/2020 21:56

Unless you are a long distance lorry driver exclusively working in the food sector your international travel was completely unnecessary.

Eng123 · 08/09/2020 21:57

Where is the hipocrosy in travelling g through permitted routes and following the rules? As the risk changed so does the restrictions / rules.

And the risk hasn't gone up enough to willy nilly shut down entire industries based on whims . . .
Eng123 · 08/09/2020 21:59

@ShamPayne
I accept the restrictions around travel without complaint as the controls are necessary.

I've been accused of acting out of self interest but most of the stronger views expressed here are from those with directly vested interests.

I feel very strongly that we shouldn't shut down the leisure and beauty industry without clear evidence that they're an issue.

I don't have a personal or direct interest in either sector- I work in education.

I didn't, I said it was mild in the majority of people who contract it and not even an illness in a not insignificant number of people who test positive for it. Because that is the truth.

ShamPayne · 08/09/2020 22:01

But people are following the rules in the sectors you want to shut down. 🤦‍♀️
But you like travelling but don’t like going to the pub or having beauty treatments so it explains your stance.

I accept the changing rules around travel. What I'm suggesting is that the rules around entertainments need to change to.

I'm getting desperate for my eyebrows to be sorted!!

@Eng123

Isn't a socially distance pub an oxymoron? I know it's a difficult call but something has to be done and it has to be simple.

I don't know what kind of pubs you visit or where you live but the ones I go to mainly serve food, have tables a good distance apart and are table service only . You sign up to track and trace on entry . Hand sanitise and are then directed to your table , no more than 6 people to a table Mostly staff are wearing masks or visors .

They also employ a lot of people , people who cannot afford to have more weeks out of work, no more furlough and there can be several weeks lag in between people being able to claim benefits.

As others have said. The idea that young people won't get together and drink if pubs are shut is at best naive.

However I certainly do agree that there should be more monitoring to ensure that everywhere is adhering to Covid safe regulations .

Two strips of gaffer tape and a stiff drink!
Fingers crossed this bug is just a memory soon.
