Greater Manchester cases rising even more. What can be done?

I've been watching these for a while and despite local lockdowns the rates are going up. Bolton is bloody scary. I am just within the GM boundary and our rate has gone up from 8 to 13 in the space of about 3 days. Schools only went back 3 days ago and I can't see the figures improving. How can things be controlled when local half-assed lockdowns are not working and everyone is back in school? Will us shielded ones end up shielded again? At what point will schools close?

Yep I agree. The govt have made mistakes for sure but most of this is individual choices.

Why are we flying to Spain driving to France etc.

If people had acted like they are now in ww2 we would have definitely lost the war.

"Oh can't be arsed to put my blackout curtains up tonight"

Individual responsibility counts for everything

IMO the best thing Boris could have done is sack Dom Cummings. But hey ho.

Alex50 · 08/09/2020 10:35

I don’t think Boris was camping in Scotland for his holiday either 😊 this was a publicity stunt if ever I saw one.

Just to point out that there were people who rode around villages/towns on their bikes in WW2 enforcing the blackout, because not everyone abided by it.

London's rate is very high according to those figures. 32 boroughs in London. All very interconnected. Add their cases up to get the true London as a whole city figure. As you say, it's a very large population - but the geographical area is actually relatively small.

ceeveebee · 08/09/2020 14:19

That’s not the way the rates work - they are rates, not number of cases - you don’t add them up to get the true London rate, you average them

ceeveebee · 08/09/2020 14:32

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/cases?areaType=region&areaName=London
Total cases 1,436 in 7 days to 4 September
Population 9m
Rate 16/100,000

Well, they are putting further restrictions on Bolton. I'm hoping they have an effect.

Won't make a great impression on new students at Bolton University , main hall of residence is 2 minutes from railway station which is 20 minutes away from Manchester.
Can't see how this is going to work unless they police the train station.

Hereinthesticks · 08/09/2020 16:07

Bolton: hospitality to close between 10pm and 5am. Does that mean you can still go to the pub or bar up to 10pm and then all day after 5am? That is not closing pubs and bars then. They need to close the pubs an bars properly. If these things are open, people will go there and the virus will spread.

Hereinthesticks · 08/09/2020 16:10

Might be wrong, apparently pubs and bars are take-away only? But as @Starisnotanumber says, what is to stop people travelling to the next town? They need to do like Caerphilly and say travel is for work and essential trips only.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 08/09/2020 16:21

I would imagine they're not doing it because it's utterly unenforceable and they don't want to lose face. I don't know Caerphilly, but Bolton sits amongst lots of very interconnected boroughs and people move between them. You might live on one road at the edge of one part of GM, and over the road your nearest chippy is in another borough. My family's preferred Indian takeaway is in a different area of GM to the one I live in, and it's still pretty close.

If people in Bolton want to go to Salford or Wigan for recreation, they're going to. There'd have to be checks on hundreds and hundreds of roads out, perhaps thousands even, to stop it.

ceeveebee · 08/09/2020 16:25

Based on latest data, I think Trafford gone back up to 32, and Stockport and Wigan now gone over the 25 mark into Amber

x2boys · 08/09/2020 16:29

The people in Bolton have themselves to blame for this I live in Bolton nobody gives a shit ,they will continue to ignore the guidelines imo.

Omg, is that true, I spat my coffee out, what great holidday photos :)

Starisnotanumber · 08/09/2020 16:50

It going to be impossible to make any impact as far as I can see on Bolton other than to make a vague point and close some businesses down to prove they are doing something.
Most places are only a couple of miles to the boundary and the worse affected area are directly connected to Bury.
On the main road between Bury and Bolton
there is is one pub in Bolton that has had to shut already due to infection and within 100m in Bury one that can open.
How on Earth is that going to be effective

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 08/09/2020 16:52

I hadn't even looked at where the worst affected bits of Bolton were! Ok, that makes it even less likely that people will comply or that this will actually achieve anything.

Starisnotanumber · 08/09/2020 17:05

Obviously a local just a couple of figures for you breightmet South 30 Tonge 25 Central 20.
Much less over towards Wigan Westhoughton side

Saw this earlier, thought it may be of interest.

x2boys · 08/09/2020 18:23

Bolton ,s a big place yes weshoughton Horwich might not be as badly affected but what if you work in westhoughton but live in Breightmet ,it will soon spread

Starisnotanumber · 08/09/2020 18:39

X2boys I agree totally in our office 2 from Wigan 1 from Manchester 1 from Oldham 1 from Bolton 1 from Bury.
We are still supposed to go into work and Boris wants us to go shopping and get takeaways at lunchtime and after work.
Shutting pubs won't really make much difference to us but people in greater manchester seem to travel around can't see transmission being massively altered.
No idea what's happening to hairdressers, nail bars etc, nothing appears to have been said.

Alex50 · 08/09/2020 20:44

@Jenasaurus yeah so funny and considering he’s supposed still be recovering from long term Covid, do you really think he would be holidaying in a tent in a middle of a field in Scotland 😂 the general public are so gullible sometimes, I bet he was abroad in one of his private houses somewhere and not quarantining when he came back.

Where i am they have had 5 new cases today and 20 over the last week, we are on the out skirts of London.

Alex50 · 08/09/2020 21:41

The schools are going to be absolute chaos if a whole bubble have to isolate every 5 mins, we need more accurate testing
