Greater Manchester cases rising even more. What can be done?

I've been watching these for a while and despite local lockdowns the rates are going up. Bolton is bloody scary. I am just within the GM boundary and our rate has gone up from 8 to 13 in the space of about 3 days. Schools only went back 3 days ago and I can't see the figures improving. How can things be controlled when local half-assed lockdowns are not working and everyone is back in school? Will us shielded ones end up shielded again? At what point will schools close?

We are still self isolating but I don't feel happy at all about sending them back next week. I'm getting my head around the fact they will be at home more than in school this term until spring so I'm going to prepare for home schooling as best I can. There's been hardly any work set for dds today. I quick maths exercise for my year 9 and she'd done it before she'd finished her morning cup of tea.

Those local lockdown restrictions are really doing a sterling job eh?

SistemaAddict · 15/09/2020 19:55

They are indeed!! Makes me wonder what the next steps are for Bolton.

101 schools affected by cases/isolations so far and they've only been back less than 2 weeks. I've totally lost faith now.

ceeveebee · 15/09/2020 19:58

Problem is that whatever new thing they restrict takes 2-3 weeks to have an impact, and in the meantime asymptomatic people are going around unwittingly spreading it.
Mass door to door testing, and paid self isolation would be the only way I think.

beenrumbled · 15/09/2020 20:01

Case in DS2 secondary school in Tameside. We got a letter from the head. Just said contacts identified and isolating, and the rest to attend as usual. No mention of it being an entire year group thats isolating. I suspect more will follow.

Yes, there is no way any of this is going to be dealt with if people who lose money by self-isolating aren't paid for it. Restrictions alone don't and aren't going to work.
happytoday73 · 15/09/2020 20:37

Additionally GM other challenge is other local areas having high case rates.. Warrington as of this weekend is 6th highest rate in country with a rate just under 100.

ceeveebee · 15/09/2020 20:48

I don’t understand why they aren’t putting all these high areas (over 50 or 100) into local lockdown but Trafford (which has stayed pretty flat at 40ish for a few weeks really) is still locked down. Probably because they realise it isn’t working.

EducatingArti · 15/09/2020 20:51

Trafford hasn't stayed flat. It was in the 20s but increasing when it got told it couldn't go out of lockdown.

ceeveebee · 15/09/2020 21:03

It started local lockdown at 40 and has bobbed around between 30-40 but overall stayed in that range
Small numbers make a massive difference eg
9 cases a day across the whole borough = a rate of about 26
13 cases a day across the whole borough = a rate of 38

ceeveebee · 15/09/2020 21:04

(Yes it went below 30 but literally for one week in August)

EducatingArti · 15/09/2020 21:06

But 30 to 40 is not low enough to lift additional lockdown rules. It needs to be consistently below 20 ( which is the rule usually applied to not need to quarantine when returning from another country)

ceeveebee · 15/09/2020 21:13

If you read what I actually said, I was questioning why areas with rates way higher than Trafford are not being locked down?

That's my question to. The NE is being largely ignored by government and media. Merseyside too. Cases are steadily rising and now would be the time to act. Before it gets out of hand.
x2boys · 15/09/2020 21:27

God knows what they will do with us in Bolton my son managed a week in year nine, before they emailed me this morning to say someone in his bubble tested positive,he's now self isolating untill the 24😭

SistemaAddict · 15/09/2020 21:42

110 schools across Greater Manchester now confirmed with Covid cases www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/110-schools-across-greater-manchester-18940125

The comments are interesting about the head boy from Cheadle Hulme. Only hearsay of course so apologies head boy if you didn't actually cause your sixth form to close.

The article doesn't mention the 2 schools my dc go to where many are self isolating due to symptoms, only those with confirmed cases. I'd be interested to see the numbers of schools where any member of staff or students are isolating due to symptoms. I bet there's a child in every year of every school. Dd2's class mate has been isolating. Ds's class were down by 5 last week.

This feels like a March but worse because lessons should have been learned.

x2boys · 15/09/2020 22:14

Those numbers are probably not accurate as I know of another Bolton high school that have had confirmed cases ,but it's not listed

beenrumbled · 15/09/2020 22:41

DS2 school is not listed there, although school have confirmed the case. DD old high school is mentioned though.

The latest Greater Manchester figures as coronavirus infection rates soar www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/latest-greater-manchester-coronavirus-infection-18964318

I wonder what intervention will be implemented as a result?

OP posts:
x2boys · 19/09/2020 20:01

It's good Bolton,s rates have fallen slightly ,we are still ridiculously high but maybe people are finally getting it.

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 20:13

According to the article the rates across GM are now higher than they were in the peak. If no extra measures are put in place then I think that's my cue to home school. I just hope both schools are supportive.

OP posts:
x2boys · 19/09/2020 20:30

My son only managed a week in school before he had to self isolate someone in his bubble tested positive,he was initially off until the 24th but someone else tested positive so now he's off untill the 29th this is going to be a frequent occurrence I fear

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 20:35

Mine managed 3 days but dd1 only 1 day and then we fell ill. It's shit.

Rates at the peak are vastly understated. There was no testing being carried out other than admissions to hospital. I have seen estimates that the true number of infections was at least 10 x that reported at the peak

But agree the rates are worrying.
I am in Trafford and taking some comfort from the very localised map which shows that there are very few cases in the area where I live - I work the rate out at about 20/100,000 for south Trafford.
