to have run out of sympathy for people who find masks 'uncomfortable'?

It might be because I'm out of tolerance for a lot of things at the moment but I've had enough of the 'but my face gets hot' and 'couldn't possibly wear one for 2 ours straight' brigade.

Barring medical exemptions, I think people just need to suck it up.

I wore an FFP3 mask at work day in day out for hours at a time for years. Yes, it's weird at first and it gives you spots and makes your eyes dry and sometimes your lips dry, but your body will adapt if you keep at it. (honestly, be glad it's not a rubber half mask or a powered respirator, both of which I've also had to wear all day for years and are grim/loud respectively)

If your glasses are fogging or it doesn't fit right try a different type - there are lots available. Mouldable nose strips really help with the specs.

You will need to speak very clearly when you talk so you can hear each other (I know it's shit if you have hearing loss - that is a situation I still have sympathy for).

Honestly, get one/a style that fits you properly, and get on with it, you'll get used to it. It really isn't that bad, and will save lives!

So... YANBU = people need to mask up and get over it
YABU = masks are the worst and comfort is more important

@Mywifeandkids1

I think the mask wearing brigade need to fuck right off personally.

By "mask wearing brigade" do you mean the sensible, law abiding people who are prepared to do something that protects others?

I'm just going to copy and paste what I said on one of the other threads where people are whinging incessantly about other people moaning:

I honestly can't work out why so many people aren't content with other people just wearing masks when required (which I agree is right, and necessary and I have always complied), they want them to be actively happy about it. Wearing a mask is shit. I had to wear one on the train for an hour and a half in 35 degree heat yesterday and it was incredibly uncomfortable and made me feel sick. I still did it, obviously, but I don't see why I have to pretend it wasn't horrible?

People also seem really, really angry when other people say they'd rather not do something than do it with a mask on. Sorry, but that's a perfectly legitimate way to feel and probably the majority position. On MN loads of people insist they'll do lots more because it's safer with mask wearing, but that certainly isn't what I saw with my local shops - footfall in all 'leisure' shops fell noticeably and dramatically when people had to wear masks. I know some people want that not to be true because it raises questions about how long we can keep mask wearing in place without (further) trashing the economy, but if this pandemic has shown us anything it's that wishing inconvenient facts weren't true isn't a great strategy, whether that's wishing that the virus would just go away so we could go back to normal, or wishing that everyone was perfectly content wearing a mask and so there is no downside to mandating it all.

No, I mean the gullible types who left their critical thinking skills at the door.

I mean the people who don't understand the whole basis of our legal system and seem to actively welcome a massive overreach into our lives on the part of the State.

I have sympathy and admiration for for people who dislike wearing them to do a job, particularly one in which they didn't ever expect to have to wear a mask. But other people should be able to express dislike for wearing one if that's how they feel.

At least it’s easier to spot the ‘anti-sheeple’ types as they are the ones out there without their masks on.

There was an interesting article int he guardian about it the other day

I can't believe any one actually enjoys wearing a mask.

Surely most are putting up with it - complying with regulations but only because they have to.

I hate it with a passion. The other day I walked up a steep hill to the post office so was quite out of breath when I arrived. I had to wait for quite a while in the shop whilst keeping my mask on of course. I could barely catch a breath and was not a happy bunny.

But I kept it on.

I wore one to hospital. I was unwell and needed to see a doctor.

I wore a mask (even though I’m exempt) because that’s the decent thing to do.
I ended up having a panic attack from claustrophobia (not just caused by the mask but it stopped me from being able to calm my breathing and prevent a panic attack) and my heart rate and blood pressure were going insane and took half an hour to go back to normal. And with what I was ill with it was important to get an accurate reading.
I fully understand the importance of wearing masks. But please have some compassion for people like me.
The doctor said “why didn’t you tell me you was claustrophobic”.
🤷🏽‍♀️ ... because no one believes you...

I'm one of the people who recognises that the threat to society of giving the State such a huge amount of power is far more of a danger than any virus ever could be.

Sadly some people just believe whatever they are told without question.

I'll moan about them as much as I want. I'm wearing one because I have to, not for 'the greater good'. They are hot, uncomfortable and I can't find one to fit properly but I'm doing my best. To those who say 'medical professionals where them all day' well I'm not a medical professional, I work in an office and didn't sign up to wear a mask to get to an from my desk!

@MissBaskinIfYoureNasty

The moaning is getting a bit tiresome. There's a small group of people who moaned that they had to be indoors because it affected their mental health and now they're moaning that they can go out, albeit in a mask, because that too upsets them. The masks are no fun and personally for me I try to avoid places where I need to wear one but that's my choice. Where its necessary I suck it up. End of. A minority want it all: the right to go wherever they want, without the responsibility of protecting others.

Aren't you moaning? Why are you allowed to moan and not other people? Who made you the thought police?

I'm just back from holiday in France and didn't see a single person not wearing a mask in any indoor public spaces. Maybe they just have fewer asthma cases / glasses wearers / trauma sufferers but it struck me (not for the first time in the last 5 years) that perhaps we've just become an island of selfish, entitled dickheads. No one likes wearing a mask, most people can manage to get over it with a little effort.

Reading MN threads I was quite anxious about going out (I have been shielding) as I feared not many people would be wearing masks.

However, I am pleased to report that in a big southern city I would say that 99% were wearing them inside, and around 80 % outdoors.

Of course no one likes wearing a mask - they’re bloody hot! - but if they prevent even one particle of virus transmitting then it’s worth it. Btw I have a condition oft cited on here as being a reason for not wearing a mask. Piffle!

I think a very large number of people are wearing one to avoid conflict. They are not wearing it properly or observing hygene. Me too.

Wow so I should go around saying isn't it great that we all have to wear masks now to hide our face, our expressions and best of all keep away from everyone.

Ummm don't you think that it's a bit odd NOT to dislike masks?

SmudgeButt · 08/08/2020 12:40

Well I have no huge trauma in my life or medical condition. I just can't wear a mask. I've tried the medical ones. I've made cloth face coverings. Nope - doesn't work. I'm currently waiting for some visors to be delivered and I hope that those are easier. I was encouraged to try these by someone working in a shop who, like me, just could not cope.

If I was forced to wear a mask I would likely pass out before I got down the second aisle of Tescos. My only way of making it around the shop is to distance myself as much as I can, turn away when someone passes closely. But be warned - the next time someone hisses at me for not wearing a mask I am likely to smack them very hard.

I think you don’t realise how many people have sensory issues even though they do not have ASC or a diagnosis of anything.
I will not go shopping anymore. I literally feel like I can’t breath. YABU to not understand that people are different and just because you are able to get used to it doesn’t mean everyone else can. Your colleagues may have left because of the mask but didn’t say it because, as you prove, people are not understanding.

I’m afraid your post actually adds weight to the idea that face covering mandates are more about reassurance for the anxious than meaningful safety measures!

I am glad that I live in a country where those who cannot wear face coverings are allowed to go out and about. Those who report from places where they “didn’t see anyone not wearing a mask” and come to the conclusion that the U.K. is full of selfish feeble whiners say far more about themselves.

YABU. I’m not personally moaning but I can see why people are! That said, all the people I know who moan are 100% compliant so what’s the big deal? People moan about all types of stuff all the time. I’m sure my morning about the heat this weekend has annoyed some people. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@myhumps123 but that’s precisely why I should wear one. I am incredibly traumatised but I should not let that trauma defeat me and if I can push through it all and do the shopping in one, then that’s many more people who I won’t have potentially infected.
No one has to like wearing them, but people need to stop giving stupid pretend reasons and do what’s good for others and not just themselves.
