to have run out of sympathy for people who find masks 'uncomfortable'?

It might be because I'm out of tolerance for a lot of things at the moment but I've had enough of the 'but my face gets hot' and 'couldn't possibly wear one for 2 ours straight' brigade.

Barring medical exemptions, I think people just need to suck it up.

I wore an FFP3 mask at work day in day out for hours at a time for years. Yes, it's weird at first and it gives you spots and makes your eyes dry and sometimes your lips dry, but your body will adapt if you keep at it. (honestly, be glad it's not a rubber half mask or a powered respirator, both of which I've also had to wear all day for years and are grim/loud respectively)

If your glasses are fogging or it doesn't fit right try a different type - there are lots available. Mouldable nose strips really help with the specs.

You will need to speak very clearly when you talk so you can hear each other (I know it's shit if you have hearing loss - that is a situation I still have sympathy for).

Honestly, get one/a style that fits you properly, and get on with it, you'll get used to it. It really isn't that bad, and will save lives!

So... YANBU = people need to mask up and get over it
YABU = masks are the worst and comfort is more important

YANBU. I find FFP3’s bad enough - it’s the bruise on the bridge of my nose that gets me

I think more clarity is needed here. Are you saying people shouldn't moan AND not wear one? Or are you saying people shouldn't moan about wearing one full stop? If it's the latter, then you're definitely BU. People adjust in different ways and venting frustration is an important one of those ways - it helps them to find alternative solutions.

Please clarify as I think that's key to your thread.

Probably because there is no third option of "I'll where a mask where I have to but that doesn't mean I can't grouse about it."

People shouldn't moan AND not wear one.

Or wear it under their nose, or under their chin.

Moaning because 'I've had to wear this for too long and now my face is sweaty' I can put up with.

Moaning is allowed. As long as you're moaning because you did the right thing and it's annoying. It is annoying, my glasses steam up with the fabric ones and my face is tiny so most don't fit properly. I'm pretty sure I did a lot of moaning when I first had to wear one too. But I still got on with it.

Why do you want people to be happy about wearing masks? Isn’t it enough that they are wearing them?

@MooneyBadger

If people (who are able to) are wearing their masks, I really don't see the problem in them expressing that they find them uncomfortable.

Personally I find the 'everyone else should be more like me' types far more irritating than someone complaining that their face itches or their glasses steam up.

It's not real-life Top Trumps.

This!!

I hate wearing a face mask. But I wear one anyway. Doesn't mean I can't express how uncomfortable I find it.

I do also find that I choose not to go places. I do food shopping as that's essential, but I don't go for a wander around the shops. I buy stuff online rather than go to the shops. Someone on a different thread mentioned needing to wear them in a cinema (cinemas not open where I am) and I could think of nothing worse about paying a fortune for tickets then being hot and uncomfortable for a couple of hours. I just won't go. I don't expect the rules to change just for me

I have some serious past trauma surrounding things around my face and nose. I am still in therapy nearly 8 years later because of it and I still manage to wear a mask.
I have to wear glasses as I’m partially sighted and I struggle with my hearing.
I’m sick to death of people on Facebook claiming it “makes them feel anxious/worried” (about what???) and claiming they know better because the odd GP and quack have come out saying that they don’t support them (when all virology suggests they are perfectly useful).
There is one girl who says they make her “so hot she fainted” so I asked what type she was wearing “spandex” well that’s why. She went on to say due to her “disabilities” (she has never mentioned them before and when I asked she said she didn’t want to tell me - I’ve known her IRL for years and never has it been mentioned even when disabilities were the topic and she’s the sort of person to shout about them) she cannot wear them and is exempt. Yet she’s a hairdresser and spends all day in a face visor which is a perfectly acceptable alternative. Why the hell she won’t wear one to do her shopping with is beyond me.
It just irritates me that I am massively traumatised, have panic attacks and pass out but I still force myself to wear one to protect others, whilst people who have none of these issues swan around spreading covid and have no repercussions.

I haven't seen or heard a lot of complaining about masks in the real world - in the last fortnight I've seen only one example of a person entering a shop without one - he was challenged by staff and left, swearily

But that's just one person, and I live in a busy, popular holiday resort so would've expected to see a few more

The moaning is getting a bit tiresome. There's a small group of people who moaned that they had to be indoors because it affected their mental health and now they're moaning that they can go out, albeit in a mask, because that too upsets them. The masks are no fun and personally for me I try to avoid places where I need to wear one but that's my choice. Where its necessary I suck it up. End of. A minority want it all: the right to go wherever they want, without the responsibility of protecting others.

I do find them uncomfortable and hot, and I do wear them where required without complaint, moaning or passive-aggressive behaviour at the time, and I do realise that people have to wear them for their entire shift and have empathy for them.

None of these things exclude the other.

I don’t think I’ll get used to them as I’ve just stopped shopping as much as possible. Apart from the corner shop for milk I doubt I will wear one much.
They are a major migraine trigger for me - as are hair bands, hats, sunglasses if they aren’t loose, hair clips. Anything that creates any tension on my head sets it off. Unless there are stick on ones?

Also I’m in the NE - a good number of people not wearing them.

Fair enough then. Yes, people who simply find it uncomfortable should wear one anyway, and they are free to moan about it too. Anybody with a real exemption shouldn’t have to justify not wearing one. People who get sweaty and so choose not to wear one are selfish arseholes who make life harder for people like @Drumple and anybody else who shouldn’t have to feel obliged to explain their reasoning.

But all of that being said, this has been a very regular topic on MN recently. I think most people already agree with the above, and I hope the threads about it stop soon

Good point. It wasn't my intention to fuel smug fuckery or the mask-police attacking people who genuinely need to not wear one or remove it for real reasons.

I feel that people spouting off about how shop staff can't possibly be expected to wear one all day because they are so uncomfortable feeds people's acceptance of non-compliance, but I can see how this post would be taken as the same thing from the opposite direction.

You would have thought people were being asked to donate a kidney not just wear a face mask.
If people find them weird they can practise wearing at home for a few minutes and then building up their time.
Anti maskers have a lot in common with anti vaxxers.

As long as you are wearing a face covering in shops and other places where it is required, whinge and moan as much as you like, but wear one.

You started a thread to grumble about people who actually are following the rules and putting masks on even if they find it hard but because they are finding it tough are sharing (or having a moan) that.

Is it not just good enough that they are actually wearing one?
They have to stay quiet and like it too now?

I bet none or hardly any of them have compared themselves to a person wearing official ppe because most people know there is no comparison but that doesn't mean they don't have a hard time with it and sometimes for very valid but private reasons like sexual or dv assault etc as has been expressed on here but they don't want to say that obviously so they have a "general" moan.
