to have run out of sympathy for people who find masks 'uncomfortable'?

It might be because I'm out of tolerance for a lot of things at the moment but I've had enough of the 'but my face gets hot' and 'couldn't possibly wear one for 2 ours straight' brigade.

Barring medical exemptions, I think people just need to suck it up.

I wore an FFP3 mask at work day in day out for hours at a time for years. Yes, it's weird at first and it gives you spots and makes your eyes dry and sometimes your lips dry, but your body will adapt if you keep at it. (honestly, be glad it's not a rubber half mask or a powered respirator, both of which I've also had to wear all day for years and are grim/loud respectively)

If your glasses are fogging or it doesn't fit right try a different type - there are lots available. Mouldable nose strips really help with the specs.

You will need to speak very clearly when you talk so you can hear each other (I know it's shit if you have hearing loss - that is a situation I still have sympathy for).

Honestly, get one/a style that fits you properly, and get on with it, you'll get used to it. It really isn't that bad, and will save lives!

So... YANBU = people need to mask up and get over it
YABU = masks are the worst and comfort is more important

@ToffeePennie sorry to hear what happened to you but you are choosing to wear it and good for you but don't bash other people for not wearing one for legitimate reasons.
It's sounds that some mask wearers have a mob mentality.
If you are having panic attacks and nearly passing out you should not be wearing a mask. Don't be a matyr. Wearing a mask is not be all or end all. Keep your two metre distance and wash hands regularly and that should be sufficient.
I think some people won't be satisfied until your dead on the floor , with your mask on ofcourse.

toohot200 · 08/08/2020 12:04

I work full time in the hospital and wear masks all the time and have done for months and months. Not a single break goes by without someone coming in to the office loudly proclaiming how much they 'fucking hate these bastard masks' or similar when they can take it off. It's shit. We all hate it. We all wear them. Get over your smugness as you aren't speaking for all NHS workers as not everyone has just 'got used it'. Communication isn't just improved by speaking clearly and trying lots of masks is not a luxury poorer people can afford. Why don't you just keep your nose out?

Boulshired · 08/08/2020 12:05

The only moaning I have heard is more conversational, similar to complaining about the heat. People just getting use to not only wearing a mask but getting used to everyone else wearing one.

Have you only just realised this? Haven't you seen the many threads saying only the old and vulnerable are at risk so why should everyone else suffer to protect us, or that we would have died soon anyway of that we should all be made to stay at home so that everyone else can get back to normal?

People are wearing masks. Bore off
raspberryk · 08/08/2020 12:11

Yabu - bully for you that you don't find it too bothersome and you got over it.

Some of us don't have any medical exemption, haven't suffered any abuse but still find it almost intolerable.

So much so I can't do my weekly shop in person as it makes me feel ill with my face covered. I tried the other week and it wasn't even a hugely hot day, I got to a point I started to feel hot, dizzy, faint, headachey and sick and I had to abandon.
I managed a short trip to pets and home and stood in the queue felt really queasy, which made me almost panicky as I hate being sick.

VinylDetective · 08/08/2020 12:14

I’m really tired of this attitude. Yes, I wear a mask where and when required. It limits where I’m prepared to go so I’m still basically in lockdown. Now I’m not even allowed to say I don’t like the bloody things.

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 08/08/2020 12:15

It is fundamentally unreasonable to make Person A do something to protect the health of Person B without the express consent of Person A.

No problem with the law requiring you to refrain from doing something, but the State compelling a positive action is really contrary to centuries of jurisprudence in this country

Quite apart from anything else, you have to ask yourself why such a small minority of people wore masks until it became a legal requirement?

alreadytaken · 08/08/2020 12:15

The people not wearing masks are often the ones NOT keeping their distance. So if you have a genuine reason not to wear a mask you are, I'm afraid, getting the fall out from the "it's all made up" crowd. You should feel as annoyed about those people as the rest of us.

I have medical reasons for finding it more uncomfortable than the average person - I was wearing a mask before it became compulsory and the only person I moan to is my OH when he complains about wearing one.

myhumps123 · 08/08/2020 12:15

You're not yourGrin typo from.my first postShock

Rebelwithallthecause · 08/08/2020 12:15

This is quite an extreme reaction though

Not everyone refusing or moaning about face coverings have the same reasons you do

I’m fact I can’t imagine many would at all

I too have been orally raped in a violet attack but my association between that and the face mask wearing is luckily very different so i don’t get the panic attacks

No one here not even Op is saying you should be wearing one Dumple.

It’s the people who just don’t fancy wearing one because they feel a tad uncomfortable that’s not on.

And yes, I’ve too found that most in that boat are the anti-vaxxer crowd who are refusing to be ‘sheeple’ and fear the government are using it to control the population

Viviennemary · 08/08/2020 12:16

So if a person working for the NHS and the job required a mask would they still get exemption. Same with surgeons.

Rebelwithallthecause · 08/08/2020 12:16

That’s was in response to Yewtree and Dumples discussion

GoshHashana · 08/08/2020 12:17

I'm with you, OP. Pure snowflakery.

Drumple · 08/08/2020 12:18

But the op is saying that people can’t say they don’t like it.

Why? What Difference does that make If the people are wearing it?

And if they’re not, literally why do they have to tell anyone (other then authorised people) why they aren’t? They don’t.

These threads are absolutely awful.

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 08/08/2020 12:18

Ahh, it makes me sad to read your post.

In an ideal world, of course the vulnerable should be protected, just not when to do so would cause such utter devastation to everyone (the vulnerable included) to render it a phyrric victory.

Rebelwithallthecause · 08/08/2020 12:18

@Viviennemary

So if a person working for the NHS and the job required a mask would they still get exemption. Same with surgeons.
I asked this before and was told that apparently anyone who would need an exemption wouldn’t get a job as a surgeon or work for the NhS

So I can only assume that there are a much smaller number of NHS staff without asthma based on these boards

Drumple · 08/08/2020 12:19

I couldn’t do a job that would require me to wear a mask.

DeepTreacle · 08/08/2020 12:19

“ The people not wearing masks are often the ones NOT keeping their distance. ”

I found the ones not keeping their distance were the ones wearing masks (close enough for it to have been rude pre coronavirus), up until the mandate came in. But most people are doing their best.

Rebelwithallthecause · 08/08/2020 12:20

@Drumple

You’re probably best staying away from them.

They trigger you and it can’t be good for you

It’s otherwise just a general discussion on the matter which is what forums are for after all

Mywifeandkids1 · 08/08/2020 12:20

I think the mask wearing brigade need to fuck right off personally.

Bemorechicken · 08/08/2020 12:21

@Drumple

Why should I have to tell you I was orally raped and had a hand put over my mouth and nose as I was pinned down and raped?

Why can’t I just make the excuse that it makes my glasses steam up.

Honest to god I am sick fed up with this mask shite meaning I have to wear a lanyard get a badge mark myself out and tell every nosy bastard with a clipboard what happened to me.

You shouldn't. I wouldn't make an excuse of glasses-just say medical reason. The majority of people will wear them but they haven't gone through your attack. I'm so sorry for the crime that was committed against you. In my eyes, and every other living decent person in the UK, you have a medical reason not to. That includes anxiety / stress/ trauma etc. In a way it would be far easier for a PHE to issues "passes" to people not wearing them - no questions asked.

I don't question it.

However, for the vast majority of the population, masks are a must right now and for the foreseeable future. If I wear a mask, I protect others and ergo myself. For me I don't like it, it steams my glasses up etc but I'd far rather do that -then put myself or someone else at risk or wear a ventilator. In other countries, a far harsher line has been pulled -and you just do -else you are arrested.
We've had it easier than other counties here in the UK.
My friend in France -told me -no exceptions -allowed out with a letter to go to local supermarket with a face covering etc .-during lockdown. In another country a friend was only allowed 50m away from their flat.

Rebelwithallthecause · 08/08/2020 12:21

@Mywifeandkids1

I think the mask wearing brigade need to fuck right off personally.
So the majority of the infected countries of the world then?
Drumple · 08/08/2020 12:21

this is in AIBU.

Not the coronavirus topic.
