to have run out of sympathy for people who find masks 'uncomfortable'?

It might be because I'm out of tolerance for a lot of things at the moment but I've had enough of the 'but my face gets hot' and 'couldn't possibly wear one for 2 ours straight' brigade.

Barring medical exemptions, I think people just need to suck it up.

I wore an FFP3 mask at work day in day out for hours at a time for years. Yes, it's weird at first and it gives you spots and makes your eyes dry and sometimes your lips dry, but your body will adapt if you keep at it. (honestly, be glad it's not a rubber half mask or a powered respirator, both of which I've also had to wear all day for years and are grim/loud respectively)

If your glasses are fogging or it doesn't fit right try a different type - there are lots available. Mouldable nose strips really help with the specs.

You will need to speak very clearly when you talk so you can hear each other (I know it's shit if you have hearing loss - that is a situation I still have sympathy for).

Honestly, get one/a style that fits you properly, and get on with it, you'll get used to it. It really isn't that bad, and will save lives!

So... YANBU = people need to mask up and get over it
YABU = masks are the worst and comfort is more important

YABU. People are 'sucking it up' by wearing masks. Doesn't mean it can't be uncomfortable though.

They make my glasses steam up -tried a few, makes no difference. Can't not wear glasses because I can't bloody see then.

Pumpkin, you can put a folded tissue in the mask and it stops them steaming up. There are various videos on YouTube.
You can also try rubbing the tiniest bit of dry soap onto the inner lens of your glasses, then rubbing it in with a soft cloth. This also helps.

Yet another person who can’t get their head round the idea that people will still wear them as required but are still entitled not to like it

YABU and a goady fucker

@fedupwiththeidots

There have been endless links to studies on MN about the efficacy of masks. Even just a Google search will give you some to read.

That's funny because when I google, I can only find studies (proper RCT studies) that show either no effect or in the case of cloth masks, a worsening of viral transmission.

I suggest you try and understand what a study is, rather than stuff like that "in countries like Korea and Singapore they wear masks and have had fewer deaths". They also eat more noodles in Singapore than we do in the U.K., but nobody suggests noodle eating prevents COVID, do they?

Well here's one

www.ox.ac.uk/news/2020-07-08-oxford-covid-19-study-face-masks-and-coverings-work-act-now

That's an article about the study but there's a link to download it within the article

Please don't rub your glasses with soap, apparently this damages the coatings.

I think there is a lot of confusion when it comes to the homemade masks.
In the beginning we were advised in the UK to make one out of t-shirts and socks, even a bandana was good enough. Countries such as China cited for their use of it.
Turns out, thanks to other mn members, they use filers and nowhere
near the same as what is getting trotted out.

Turns out bandanas are one of the worse things to wear because of what happens when these face coverings get damp.
Think we were advised, or even still are, that 2 layers are all we need.

Someone mentioned putting some tissue between the layers to help. prevent the fog, others have said to do the same as an effective filter!!

@Dinosauratemydaffodils that's why I stamp my feet and say I don't want to. We have to have a quality of life and if other people cannot deal with it, it's on them. I know it's hard, I also had a breakdown a few months ago, I'm a shielder who had the audacity to go out during lock-down. In rl I have found attitudes a lot different to on here, I've been going out and using public transport etc since it was introduced without a mask, the first week it was introduced inside, I had one couple try and make an issue, but the store staff put them in their place. Please don't read this as trying to get you out and about, because it is hard. Even though it's been fine, it still prevents me from going out. And of course, the biggest issue I have is mask wearers come into my space, whereas none mask wearers stay the fuck away from me.

@HeresMe

I wear a mask but, there is a lot here who seem to demand people enjoy wearing a mask.

So these people get a thrill out of a mask or is it something I don't get.

Yep!

The first is an interesting read, the second is the research which like the Oxford study hasn't been peer reviewed yet.

This constant tripe really makes my piss fizz! This Bullshit that people saying they find wearing a mask uncomfortable equates to people not wearing a mask at all when it clearly doesn't! Most people are "sucking it up " and if they are choosing not to go somewhere because they need to wear a mask for a prolonged period of time that's entirely their right and choice to make. As long as they're worn when needs to be who cares whether thats for a quick nip to the shop for essentials or spending all day walking round a museum.
Just stop with the self righteous spouting on irrelevant things like this most people are trying their best to deal with everything that's going on without having to justify if they find a mask uncomfortable or not. If you don't find a mask uncomfortable good for you not everybody has to feel that way Angry

Totally agree.

Now that they can’t moan about people not wearing masks, all they can do is moan about people wearing them but not liking them. Madness.

I wear a mask when required but am entitled to not like it. I only do essential shops now. So am only going to Tesco. Though i did nip to Sainsburys on Friday to get some magazines. (i wasnt sure our Tesco would have) So this and food shopping. And i dont fancy walking in 30+ degree heat and then donning a mask. To enable me to do the latter i got an air conditioned cab into town. And will do this whenever there is a heatwave. Supporting our self employed taxi drivers.

I find masks claustrophobic and hot and have a history of facial impetigo which there is a higher risk of in humidity. The last time i was in a high street shop was 22nd July.

Still not been to hairdressers and it turns out my grey that i was so worried about is a black and white ombre.

Before i even knew they were going to make masks mandatory in shops here, i warned family i wont be shopping for Christmas presents this year. For adults or kids. Kids can have money in a card. The run up to Christmas can be stressful and this whole year has felt like that X a million. So im checking out!

I hope Cheltenham and those footie matches etc were worth it. They made their choices. Thems the breaks!

Someone not liking wearing a mask but wearing it is not the same as refusing yet the gaslighters on here keep on saying it is. The gaslighting and policing for wrongthink over the fact that people are perfectly entitled to not LIKE wearing masks yet DO so, , has shown me that many posters on here have got more in common with MRAs than they like to admit!

We are entitled to moan if we want. I wear them but i dont like it. That is my right. What the fuck do Delly Lomas clones like you want OP? ECT to be brought back to stop our "wrongthink!!!

Just because you don’t get hot doesn’t mean that other people don’t, I actually have to take mines down from time to time as I feel like I cannot breathe and I know I’m not alone in this.

I bet Beer Guts Brian here (seen coming right up to a woman on an almost deserted train platform to viciously abuse and swear at her for not wearing one) goes to the fucking pub and happily sits there without one on. And i bet he wouldnt have done this to a 6 foot bloke.

@MissBaskinIfYoureNasty 1984 1990 and Years and Years were dramas which featured people being told how to think. George Orwell Wilfred Greatorex and Russell T Davies were not 7 when they wrote these pieces.

Ive never heard a 7 year old come out with the term thought police because they are taking the piss out people who are concerned about how other people think? Unless..............is your sons name Damien by any chance?

Your 7 year old has read Nineteen Eighty Four? That’s quite a spin on the usual “my child’s a genius” not so stealth boasts on MN

What a nasty specimen.

How many times did he touch that mask putting everyone else at risk during his rant?
Never mind getting close up in her face and asking about exemption.

That makes it worse. He knows the guidelines. So he should already know if a passenger is feeling hot they can be removed. Empty or not those stations and tin cans get hot, tfl usually have their usual drink loads of water, stay cool, remove layers etc to stop passengers passing out!

The 7 year old might say it because they've over heard it and liked it but don't fully understand it. Like when they hear fuck off, say it and manage to get the timing bang on 😂

I quite like wearing my mask as I feel more confident but I'm weird like that but I understand that others don't and they are more than welcome to moan about it. I hate the way some people seem to think that it's not good enough to do something you have to be happy about it too.

It was the same during lockdown. People it wasn't good enough just staying in you had to be happy about it.
