Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

OP posts:

Just read something about a night club in Majorca a few weeks ago, complaining they had a 24 hr license but were being asked to close at 2am...Hmm

ChavvySexPond · 25/07/2020 19:17

It was obviously a strong possibility that this would happen so I'd imagine people will have contingencies in place to cover their work commitments, not needing their childcare/or leaving pets in kennels for an extra two weeks etc.

annabel85 · 25/07/2020 19:18

@Anotherdayanothernight

annabel85 so should everything "normal" have been written off this year, ie going to beaches in the UK, travelling on the tube in London, going to work, cafes, restaurants, shops and booking a holiday/had a booking already, following the guidelines obviously?
Fine if you can socially distance doing those things.. You can't do that on a full aeroplane.
ineedaholidaynow · 25/07/2020 19:18

There was also the risk of self isolating to take into account if anyone on the plane, restaurant was ill and you were a possible contact under test or trace or that country's equivalent.

Whitney168 · 25/07/2020 19:20

@EggysMom

How many of those returning from holidays in Spain are actually going to bother sticking to the quarantine rules? Hardly any, is my guess.
I think for anyone to take this quarantine seriously, the Government are going to have to come down hard and fast, fine some people for breaking it, and make sure it's publicised ... both officially and through word of mouth of the pissed off people who've been fined.
annabel85 · 25/07/2020 19:20

It's got to be policed like other countries police it. No more relying on the Great British common sense.

lifeafter50 · 25/07/2020 19:21

How is this actually going to be monitored and enforced though?
The same way the mask aren't.
Same thing -it's to con people into thinking they are 'safer' from an infinitesimally tiny risk.

okiedokieme · 25/07/2020 19:24

@annabel85

It's up to the individual. We've already had c19. We're off tomorrow (not Spain) I want a break as I've worked every week day since the outbreak began, even when I was sick (from home of course).

As we both wfh quarantine doesn't matter

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/07/2020 19:26

@Piggywaspushed

I am amazed to hear Ryanair cancelled a flight weird!
They cancelled ours. Haven’t given us our money back yet though, from bloody April!!
itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 19:26

@Piggywaspushed

I am amazed to hear Ryanair cancelled a flight weird!
It was that bit that worried me! But I was flying from a very small airport and they do have flights out that day to same place.

I understood every airline was only working at 30-40% schedule though?

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 19:28

Not bloody cancelled any to Malaga and - even though I have a package- Villa Plus are pretending this means their hands are tied.

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 19:29

Oh dear driving. My balance wasn't due until 6th August and I wasn't due to go until 20th.

Will I get my money back before the pandemic ends?!

Cherrysherbet · 25/07/2020 19:29

So, are managers going to refuse employees coming back to work if they’ve been to Spain? I hope so.

Why anyone would go on a holiday abroad at this time is beyond me.

I can ( sort of) understand the dilemma if you’ve booked pre Covid, and will lose money, but those who have booked to go just because you’ve got a cheap deal....sorry, no sympathy from me at all.

We all know the situation, and I think it’s selfish to travel unnecessarily at this time. Spreading the virus to and from different countries.

If you’ve booked a holiday to Spain, and took the chance, knowing the situation, well your gamble didn’t pay off. That’s life.

mrpumblechook · 25/07/2020 19:29

@EggysMom

If they have told any of the colleagues that the are going to Spain then they aren't going to be able to go into work when they get back (if they don't work at home)
Redolent · 25/07/2020 19:30

@Alloverthegrapevine

It's all irrelevant anyway really because no one will be enforcing it. You can travel home from the airport on public transport for a start.

Like all the other restrictions, those who have the kinds of jobs that mean they can quarantine on full pay will do it, everyone else will carry on and no one will stop them.

So you don’t think an employer will be asking questions if a member of their staff returns from Spain and swans into work?
mrpumblechook · 25/07/2020 19:31

So, are managers going to refuse employees coming back to work if they’ve been to Spain? I hope so.

They will probably make them take unpaid leave if they can't work at home.

user1497207191 · 25/07/2020 19:31

@lifeafter50

I'm puzzled people have gone when it has been in the news for weeks about outbreaks and lockdowns in Catalonia etc.
Why are you puzzled. People were still leaving the UK to go on holiday the day before Boris announced the lockdown, after 2/3/4 weeks of it being blatantly obvious what was happening around the World. Some people are either thick or just don't care and are going to do what they want and sod the consequences.
Redolent · 25/07/2020 19:32

‘Oh but everything’s already been paid for’ - aka sunk cost theory in action.

People said the same when they travelled abroad in March. Many ended up stuck there seeking repatriation flights.

user1497207191 · 25/07/2020 19:32

@mrpumblechook

And so they should. People going abroad in the last few weeks knew full well there was a high risk of this happening. They took that risk and if there are consequences (like not getting paid), they should have factored that in when they made the decision to go abroad. None of this is a surprise.
ineedaholidaynow · 25/07/2020 19:33

I assume if anyone has checked in on social media whilst in Spain it won't be a secret where they have been!

Alloverthegrapevine · 25/07/2020 19:33

Redolent, I think if the employer isn't going to pay the quarantine period, the staff member won't tell them where they've been. I also think the kinds of employer who won't pay the quarantine period won't much care anyway.

WwMILd · 25/07/2020 19:34

@whataballbag

Would the quarantine apply to family (living with) the holidaymaker?

As in the whole household quarantine even if just one has been away?

@whataballbag

Gov.uk says no - if they haven’t been abroad they don’t need to isolate too

Notgoingonholiday · 25/07/2020 19:34

Cherrysherbet couldn't agree more. We had 2 holidays cancelled/postponed this year, one to US so totally out of our hands, the other in Oct which we decided not to go on because of the huge risks still. I have no sympathy with people that are going abroad on holidays this year.

CallmeAngelina · 25/07/2020 19:36

@Lifeafter50, If the risk is "infinitesimal" as you suggest, why would people have not travelled to Catalonia?

PaddyF0dder · 25/07/2020 19:39

Honestly have no sympathy for those affected.

Recalling abroad during a pandemic for a holiday is bloody irresponsible.
