Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

@speakout

Why would anyone have booke a foreign holiday in such uncertain times?
Madness. I know there's a clamor to get away but it really isn't the time.
ragged · 25/07/2020 19:02

I just put teen DD on a plane abroad. She can handle 2wk Qrtne when back if becomes required. Wouldn't risk it for myself, though.

SantaClaritaDiet · 25/07/2020 19:02

Is it not beyond the realms of all possibility that some jobs aren’t able to be performed from your mac in your home office? 😒

well, if you think about it logically, if you haven't been able to work during the lockdown, you must have been furlough or whatever and your priority will be to go back to work, not taking a holiday!

Kids might miss a week or 2 in Scotland, but after months anyway, you can't blame the parents to prioritise a holiday.

Most of us have rely on food delivery since March and not set foot in a shop at all.

As the quarantine wasn't a thing when they booked and went, I don't blame them. My point was merely that for many people, it was a choice and they won't suffer because a couple of weeks at home.

I am not planning on cancelling my holiday when I have finally a chance to get out after months! obviously not choosing a red spot, but I am still going

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 25/07/2020 19:04

@1950swallpaper

The Police already said that they will only fine people for breaking quarantine in extreme circumstances. You are still allowed out for essentials. Personally, as I work from home, I'm not worried.
You are only allowed out for essentials in exceptional circumstances. Where you can’t get friends, family or the local volunteer services to deliver a shop or medicines for you or get an online delivery.
Uhoh2020 · 25/07/2020 19:05

@SantaClaritaDiet I'm sure there's plenty of front line key workers who have worked bloody hard every day during this lockdown that were very much looking forward to a holiday

Youngatheart00 · 25/07/2020 19:06

Agree - as I said above the Quarantine is MUCH more severe than what most are used to.

I doubt the people who have been shielding are the people who have been / are due to be travelling so the govt will have to make the requirements very clear AND police it or it’ll just be futile.

StatisticalSense · 25/07/2020 19:06

@SantaClaritaDiet
You're sounding more and more gross by the post. Many of those unable to work from home have been continuing to go to work throughout the pandemic, but clearly it's perfectly reasonable that those whose biggest sacrifices were the lack of daily starbucks coffee and having to look after their own children for once need a holiday more than front line health workers or bin collectors.

whataballbag · 25/07/2020 19:06

Would the quarantine apply to family (living with) the holidaymaker?

As in the whole household quarantine even if just one has been away?

Alloverthegrapevine · 25/07/2020 19:07

People really do live in cloud cuckoo land.

Very many people who can't wfh have worked all the way through and are much in need of a holiday.

If holidays were booked at the start of the year, whether you've worked or not, whether you can still afford to go or not, you've paid for it and won't be getting your money back, so I can understand why people would still go.

Sharpkat · 25/07/2020 19:08

Also following to see if this will apply to Majorca. Had already made the decision not to go at the end of August but not cancelled my flight yet. My friend was disappointed that I would not go so this may get me back in the good books......

Anotherdayanothernight · 25/07/2020 19:08

annabel85 so should everything "normal" have been written off this year, ie going to beaches in the UK, travelling on the tube in London, going to work, cafes, restaurants, shops and booking a holiday/had a booking already, following the guidelines obviously?

Alloverthegrapevine · 25/07/2020 19:09

It's all irrelevant anyway really because no one will be enforcing it. You can travel home from the airport on public transport for a start.

Like all the other restrictions, those who have the kinds of jobs that mean they can quarantine on full pay will do it, everyone else will carry on and no one will stop them.

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 19:09

I booked before any of this. Mine was cancelled 2 weeks ago. To Majorca, through on the beach and flying with Ryanair.

People thought I was odd to be pleased.

Bet they don't now Grin

what's wrong with you?

I am saying I don't blame people for taking a holiday abroad, but presumably looking at the current situation, people who could NOT work during the lockdown and could not afford to lose any more work are not the ones who left! Confused

Why are you calling me "gross"? If you have worked non-stop during the lockdown, you can spare another couple of weeks for a quarantine when you decided to go. And that's absolutely fine.

jasjas1973 · 25/07/2020 19:12

lifeafter50 There has been reports of outbreaks and local lockdowns all over Europe, the Govt lifted travel restrictions because they want to save the travel industry, its a gamble sure but whats the alternative?

I still cannot believe Spain opened up night clubs... i mean why? of all the things likely to encourage spread, thats it!!! and after all they've been through.

EggysMom · 25/07/2020 19:12

How many of those returning from holidays in Spain are actually going to bother sticking to the quarantine rules? Hardly any, is my guess.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/07/2020 19:12

@SantaClaritaDiet

What's the big deal for most people?

Schools are closed anyway, so children were not due to go anywhere, people will just keep working from home. A needed quarantine is not a deterrent for a bit of holiday for many people, and it shouldn't be.

DP drives a machine on a building site. I'd love to see him do that from home, 20 miles away.

I'm not surprised about the quarantine unfortunately. Spain and other Med countries have been desperate to not lose the summer tourist season, and cases have been increasing over the last week or two.

We were looking at September, as we normally holiday then and there's some very cheap flights to a place we have been interested in for a couple of years, but it's this sort of thing that's put us off. As an agency worker, if DP doesn't go to work, he doesn't get paid, and could lose his contract and might not find another one straight away. Quarantine could literally cost us thousands, on top of the cost of the holiday.

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 19:14

I am amazed to hear Ryanair cancelled a flight weird!

corythatwas · 25/07/2020 19:14

I hope none of those outbreaks in Spain were caused by holiday-makers travelling from the UK where infection rates are much higher and then not quarantining when they got there.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/07/2020 19:15

Majorca is part of Spain so think it will apply. My 80 something neighbour just flew out there last week after shielding for the whole time, hope she is OK. I will help with shopping when she gets back if she needs to quarantine, as before.

AldiAisleofCrap · 25/07/2020 19:15

I feel sorry for those affected, it was my main reason for sitting this summer out as the risk of there being changes was quite high.
I have no sympathy for those going to Covid hotspots unless to visit relatives or a very unwell friend/funeral etc.

goose124 · 25/07/2020 19:15

I wonder if this will affect the Canary Islands too. We were looking at a holiday there because it's so cheap, but not worth the risk really

Echobelly · 25/07/2020 19:16

And this is exactly the reason I figured it was a better idea to stay in the UK this summer!

SantaClaritaDiet · 25/07/2020 19:16

BarbaraofSeville
I understand that, but if you are at so much risk of financial loss, would you really go on a foreign holiday and risk a quarantine there and a quarantine back home too?

The quarantine is hardly a surprise! What IS surprising is that foreign countries still accept Brit travellers without any restriction at the moment, how long is that going to last.

I don't begrudge people their wish to get away at all! But let's be realistic.

cologne4711 · 25/07/2020 19:16

I'm assuming it's mainland Spain only? I've nothing booked but have a friend heading out to Lanzarote - today I think.
