Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

OP posts:

@CallmeAngelina

How do Spain's numbers compare with ours?
Spain currently has 34 cases per 100k of population.

UK has 14.

Iirc air bridges were open between countries and 16 cases per 100k was what they would look at as the limit.

Thank you all we have been anxious about this trip for months and I had finally relaxed and then boom quarantine even though the spikes are in an area we are nowhere near...anyway we have managed to book in at the same place as his brother and family in france... so leaving on Tuesday. Not what he wanted but we will be driving, have n95 masks for the journey but the idea was getting away from the house where there is alot of sadness to some sun and feeling of escape...we keep an eye daily on the corona spikes so we just have to hope we might manage to escape. His brother is in a state too and delighted we may all be together

@sunflowersandtulips50

We were meant to fly out today to Malaga. We are gutted as in normal circumstances we would have went and quarantined on return but my DH has to start chemo and we have already delayed starting by a week for the holiday. And before anyone says we should not be going, we didn't get a holiday last year with the kids as my DH started his cancer treatment and we have just found out he is terminal and the one thing he wanted to do was go to his parents place in Spain with his kids. But he isn't going to get the opportunity and he is currently crying like a baby ....
Thanks

So sorry to hear this.

Totally get the feeling. My mum is also terminal. She wanted to do Disney one last time this year. Obviously cancelled. She's also had to retire from teaching as risk is too high.

Cancer is shit. Cancer in a pandemic is shittier.

Cancer than means you probably won't outlive the pandemic is just the shittiest of shittier shit.

I hope your DH treatment goes ok. Thanks

sunflowersandtulips50 · 26/07/2020 20:12

itsgettingweird cancer is shit, I have tried to say to my DH that we never know what time the treatment might bring him so he may get next year, but he is so defeated it is hard.

so sorry to hear the same thing has happened to your mum. Virtual hug from me

lifeafter50 · 26/07/2020 20:18

People will not be quarantining as we have seen on here, if employers will not find out. And I bet they will be going out and about as there will not be effective checks. How could the hospital find out if he went and just didn't tell them. If he is terminal then no-one could possibly blame him.

MorningManiacMusic · 26/07/2020 20:18

Flowers to sunflowers, itsgettingweird and Chesney.
This is why smug nasties on here should keep their traps shut.

Rayn · 26/07/2020 20:30

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
Everyone was complaining that we did not take assertive action back in March and lock down quick enough.
Now we have taken action quickly and still criticised. There is no way to keep everyone happy.

the criticism is not because of the quarantine measures being brought in. The criticism is because of the way its been applied.

People going to mainland Spain will have their trips cancelled and get their money back. Not great, but at least you have the money in your account.

People like me, who are going to the Canaries or Balearics are not having their trips cancelled so will not be getting their money back or have to pay out extra money for amending their dates to next year.

If Spain as a whole is problem enough to require quarantine then the whole of Spain should also be included in the do not travel advice.

HairyFloppins · 26/07/2020 20:44

Flowers Sorry for all those that can't go.

It really hits home the unfairness of it all. First off what their family is going through is horrendous and my heart goes out to them. But they're also responsible people who'll follow the rules and therefore are deprived of such an important holiday and 'next year' might not be an option for obvious reasons.

Whereas the 'bunch of lads' who jet off to Magaluf or the family in Benidorm or the group in Barcelona wherever it may be, will be the ones who aren't social distancing, getting pissed up the whole time and then come back and will carry on doing whatever the fuck they like.

Freeekedout · 26/07/2020 21:25

We're in the same situation Pertella Completely agree. The current halfway house is bloody useless for those of us who booked in good faith last year. We lose everything. But the people who booked mainland in the last few weeks will get all their money back. They took the risk and come out laughing. Those of us who booked early are screwed. How is that fair?

Bluebell1995 · 26/07/2020 21:28

@pertella exactly. I'm happy to cancel my holiday abroad. Even though Majorca is safer than the UK and I've worked front line in ITU throughout. Think I've got hand hygiene and mask wearing down to a tee.

However, the FCO advice is that we can still travel. Yet we also need to quarantine on return. I can hopefully be exempt, yet my self employed partner isn't and we've already struggled enough through lockdown, without losing even more of his income.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this wishy-washy advice If we were officially advised not to travel, then great. But I'll lose the whole holiday and money because of this (which was booked a year ago, way before Covid). Also took out pandemic insurance, which doesn't cover this eventually.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 26/07/2020 21:33

@Freeekedout my flights to mainland are still going. I will get nothing back.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/07/2020 21:36

Jet2 are now saying that they'll allow anyone due to fly to mainland Spain within the next couple of weeks to change or cancel their holiday without penalty if they want to, so hopefully will help some people.

Youngatheart00 · 26/07/2020 21:44

I really think the government need to carry out spot checks / police the quarantine this time and make a few examples of those who aren’t complying. The thought of us being re-seeded with virus doesn’t bare thinking about

GiraffesAreBeautiful · 26/07/2020 21:57

Sorry but no sympathy here. Government advice is for essential travel only. We can all holiday in UK despite the unpredictable weather.

Holidays aren’t essential travel. Not abroad anyway.

Bluebell1995 · 26/07/2020 22:06

@Giraffesarebeautiful

I booked my holiday last August when Covid was unheard of.

Unfortunately the government advice is still that we are able to travel to Majorca. It isn't banned like mainland Spain.

So thanks for your unsympathetic post, but I'm on the brink of losing a couple of thousand £ through no fault of my own.

Thewordgame · 26/07/2020 22:07

What about if you come back and get tested straightaway?

Thewordgame · 26/07/2020 22:08

Sorry, forgot- the incubation period is 14 days

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 22:10

People going to mainland Spain will have their trips cancelled and get their money back

Can I quote you on that?

GiraffesAreBeautiful · 26/07/2020 23:06

@Bluebell1995 you’re very welcome.

You obviously haven’t done enough to get your money back. You probably haven’t lost anything though, as you’ve already paid it out you weren’t relying on the money. Try a bit harder to get a holiday credit or refund. FFS I’ve never had my eye wiped re money but I’m not the sort who rolls over and accept bollox.

Freeekedout · 26/07/2020 23:31

GiraffesAreBeautiful There are several posters here, myself included, who booked to go to the Spanish islands before the pandemic and no longer want to go abroad. We don't consider holidays essential. But we cannot get our money back. If you think you know steps we can take to change that, by all means please explain how we can go about obtaining a refund. Then we can use that money to support local tourism instead.

MorningManiacMusic · 26/07/2020 23:39

Giraffes, there are hundreds of thousands of people unable to get money back. I was taking a school group abroad, booked in September, with hefty insurance as usual. All cancelled, by the tour operator, still awaiting (possible) refund but (probable) vouchers. And we're lucky in that respect.
You have no clue clearly.
So give the smug nastiness a break. When I saw your username I wondered if you were the lovely Giraffes poster from years ago.
Evidently not.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/07/2020 00:25

I feel sorry for anyone who has lost out on a holiday,
or who is facing quarantine,
or who can't get their money back, whenever they booked

We all take chances sometimes and make mistakes
Next time, it could be me or you wanting a bit of sympathy
