Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 18:06

Who allowed you to move your holiday felicis? Not every company has been doing this.

coffeandteav · 26/07/2020 18:17

Ryan bloody air will not let me move my flights. Well they will for £460 and in February.

BrilliantGin

Aridane · 26/07/2020 18:25

No ones going to risk holidays, surely?
Or they just won’t bother with the quarantine when they get back

Not necessarily- for those of us office workers compelled to work from home and barred access to the iffice, we go on holiday and quarantine working from home

Bellsandwhistle · 26/07/2020 18:31

No sympathy especially for anyone who booked since lockdown. I know someone there who got really cheap flights during lockdown and is now complaining re this quarantine. It was always a high likelihood and tbh I wouldn’t blame gov if they closed borders to Spain or anywhere else with significant outbreaks. Even if you booked before lockdown I think people should cancel if they can. No one has a right to a foreign holiday and this year and probably next health is more important. People flying all over the place will spread the virus and getting kids back to school is more important than a week in the sun.

uniglowooljumper · 26/07/2020 18:33

@mrpumblechook

What risk, though? Does your work spy on you? Can't imagine there's much of a risk for many. They go off on leave. As stated, 'Any plans?' 'Nah. Just going to potter about.' 'Have fun.' And not all are flying, plenty are driving. They go, come back and carry on.

People would often mention to their colleagues where they're going though. Many colleagues would inform on them in this situation as they would be putting everyone in the workplace at risk.

More fool them, then, for mentioning it at all. I suspect fewer and fewer will due to all this.
fluffybunny2001 · 26/07/2020 18:36

I feel for you OP and others in the same position. We also are due to go on the 29th August. Last time we tried to cancel, Last-minute.com said we would have to pay £800 for the privilege. That was before the new guidance though.

It is impossible to speak to anyone on the phone. It just cuts you off after an automated message. I can imagine they are rushed off their feet. We are due to pay our balance of £1500 on the 14th August. I am wondering if by then the rules will be relaxed again. Although that is by the by as my DP and mum don't want to go anyway.

Just can't believe we might end up paying £1500 for nothing. Will be hard to swallow for sure. My friend says just don't pay the balance but really scared we will end up in court!!

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 26/07/2020 18:41

@fluffybunny2001 if you don’t want to go don’t pay the balance. Why would you end up in court. We did this with a cruise so have loads of people. We’ve previously done it with Thomas cook

tigger1001 · 26/07/2020 18:47

@uniglowooljumper or alternatively people could just be responsible citizens and follow the government guidelines.

We all saw what happened in March with people coming back from holiday, why can't we act responsibly and not be selfish twats?

The government (quite rightly) have come under fire for their handling of the crisis, but we all need to take responsibility for our own actions. It's a known risk currently of travelling abroad that quarantine might be required at short notice. If people chose to take that risk and travel, then take the responsibility to follow up on the quarantine regulations upon return.

People should be asking themselves how they would feel if they broke quarantine and were carrying covid and passed it on? Knowing that if they had just followed the rules and quarantined they wouldn't have made others ill.

Noextremes2017 · 26/07/2020 18:48

Just saw Raab on the news explaining the Government decision.

The man personifies ‘Slimeball’.

sunflowersandtulips50 · 26/07/2020 18:56

We were meant to fly out today to Malaga. We are gutted as in normal circumstances we would have went and quarantined on return but my DH has to start chemo and we have already delayed starting by a week for the holiday. And before anyone says we should not be going, we didn't get a holiday last year with the kids as my DH started his cancer treatment and we have just found out he is terminal and the one thing he wanted to do was go to his parents place in Spain with his kids. But he isn't going to get the opportunity and he is currently crying like a baby ....

Bluebell1995 · 26/07/2020 19:02

@sunflowerandtulips50

So sorry, u bloody deserve that break to Spain.

It might be worth speaking to your insurers about what you would and wouldn't be covered for if you travelled against government advice. I hope there's a way around it for you all.

Casiloco · 26/07/2020 19:04

I've had 4 days off since January and am desperate for a break. Notice some posters still ignoring the fact that many of us have worked solidly and would NOT be able to work from home on our return from a well-deserved break so it's a real pain.

Understandable decision in a way - although I'm not sure we are any more likely to pick up the virus in most parts of Spain than we are at home in U.K.

We booked in January for camping in Switzerland at the beginning of September. Desperately hoping it will all be OK - driving there and of course will be outdoors so all very low risk but if the same problems arise in France or Switzerland, we are scuppered! 😔

Casiloco · 26/07/2020 19:11

sunflowerandtulips50

That's bloody awful. What a f rotten thing to happen. Flowers

Hope you somehow find a way to have a break/some real treats at home. Have an un-Mumsnetty hug!!

Delatron · 26/07/2020 19:12

Oh @sunflowersandtulips50 I really feel for you and your DH.

I’m so sick of all these smug people on here going on and on about how irresponsible it is to travel at the moment. Not knowing anybodies individual circumstances.

Freeekedout · 26/07/2020 19:12

sunflowersandtulips50 In so sorry to hear this. It puts my holiday woes into perspective Flowers

Last time I spoke to them they said that if the flight is going ahead as planned and the accommodation is open and available then by not paying we are breaching our contract with them Hmm I tried to call ABTA and they are not taking phone enquiries either.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 26/07/2020 19:17

@sunflowersandtulips50 I feel for you.

I was meant to be flying out on 12 August to cheer myself up after finishing chemo and radiotherapy in early June. I just wanted something to look forward to whilst I wait for my MRI scan to see if it's worked.

DH can't quarantine on return so we won't be going. Was also my birthday treat. He was paying for hotel and spends and me the flights. So for my birthday so far I've lost my flight money. But it was always a risk to book it. So it's my own fault.

I feel so sorry for you and your DH. I hope his chemo works well for him.

SnozPoz · 26/07/2020 19:19

Until there's a proven effective vaccine for this disease, really If you don't need to travel abroad don't. You could end up being stranded somewhere you don't want to be with families split up. It's not worth it. This virus isn't done yet... just because politicians relax the rules doesn't mean it's gone away.

There's nothing anyone can say to that, that is just truly rotten for you all Flowers
Funguy · 26/07/2020 19:24

Beats me why anyone would travel unless they had to...such a terirble thing this Covid.

Freeekedout · 26/07/2020 19:34

fluffybunny2001 Check the cancellation notes on your booking email. We booked through Lastminute and tried to cancel, only to find out that we were liable for the entire cost of the holiday if we cancelled. This applied from the day we booked in September last year. £2.4k down the drain. Only way we'll get it back is if the FCO extend their travel ban beyond the mainland or if BA cancel the flight, but that doesn't look likely. It's utterly shit. Never, ever booking with Lastminute again 😡 We took out insurance with the post office when we booked but they don't cover epidemics or pandemics, so the policy isn't worth the paper it's written on.

cantdothisnow1 · 26/07/2020 19:34

Sunflowersandtulips50 I'm so sorry that you've had to cancel. That's so bloody unfair. Flowers

bonbonours · 26/07/2020 19:49

I'm feeling relieved that we postponed our foreign holiday until next year. I had been thinking maybe we were being too cautious given that load of people seem to be going abroad.

A foreign holiday is a big deal financially to our family, I wouldn't want to risk things going wrong so I'd rather wait in the hope things have stabilised by next summer.

I know there is an industry to think about but I honestly think international travel should still be only if absolutely necessary. But the gov want to give everyone the impression things are back to normal

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 19:55

Dominic Raab apparently said it was up tot eh individual to define what constitutes 'essential' FFS. That plays right into the hands of Ryanair et al.

Deelish75 · 26/07/2020 19:59

sunflowersandtulips

I'm so sorry. Would you be able to get away anywhere in the U.K.?
